Estudió en las Universidades de Francfort y Munich, realizó un Ph.D. en física teórica con el profesor Arnold Sommerfeld en Julio de 1928 . Posteriormente fue profesor de las universidades de Tubingen, Manchester y Cornell después de emigrar de Alemania cuando Hitler llegó al poder. Trabajo durante la segunda guerra mundial en el proyecto Manhattan que llevo a la construcción de la bomba atómica. Su principal trabajo fue el estudio de las teorías del núcleo atómico. Desarrolló la teoría del Deuterón en 1934, resolvió algunas contradicciones sobre escala de masa nuclear entre muchos otros que fueron publicados en Reviews of Modern Physics que sirvieron durante muchos años como textos para los físicos nucleares. Todos los trabajos anteriores llevaron a Bethe a a d escubrir el ciclo que explica la producción de energía en la estrellas por medio de reacciones termonucleares (ciclo de Bethe o del carbono).
