Extractions: Georg von Békésy was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1899. . He was awarded his Ph.D. from the University of Budapest in 1926 for development of a fast method for determining molecular weight. In the 1930's, he was dealing with problems concerning long-distance telephone transmission in the research laboratory of the Hungarian Post. He put a stress on the study of the human ear in his work. From 1939 to 1946 he was a professor of experimental physics at the Pázmány Péter University in Budapest. He was also a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Research on this problem led to his 1928 discovery of the mechanical characteristics of neural transduction in the inner ear. One of Békésy's principal contributions was the development of anatomical techniques that allowed rapid, nondestructive dissection of the cochlea. This dissection was done under a low-power microscope using a special grinding mechanism operated in a water bath. Békésy was able to observe the traveling waves along the basilar membrane that were produced by sound. He observed the shape of these waves by stroboscopic examination of the motion of particles of silver which he sprinkled on the nearly transparent basilar membrane. Depending upon the frequency of the sound, the traveling waves achieved maximum amplitude in different locations (see figure). He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 1961 for his discovery and subsequent research arising from it.

Extractions: As director of the Hungarian Telephone System Research Laboratory (1923-46), Bekesy worked on problems of long-distance communication and became interested in the mechanics of human hearing. At the telephone laboratory, the University of Budapest (1939-46), the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm (1946-47), and Harvard University (1947-66) he conducted intensive research that led to the construction of two cochlea models and highly sensitive instruments that made it possible to understand the hearing process, differentiate between certain forms of deafness, and select proper treatment more accurately. Since the mid-19th century, it had been known that the vibratory tissue most important for hearing is the basilar membrane, stretching the length of the snail-shaped cochlea and dividing it into two interior canals. Bekesy found that sound travels along the basilar membrane in a series of waves, and he demonstrated that these waves peak at different places on the membrane: low frequencies toward the end of the cochlea and high frequencies near its entrance, or base. He discovered that the location of the nerve receptors and the number of receptors involved are the most important factors in determining pitch and loudness.

Extractions: Fri, 06 Jun 2003 14:50:13 -0500 Just a shot in the dark. Anyone ever heard of a 16mm film prepared by Georg von Bekesy (Nobel Laureate in Medicine, 1961) illustrating some of his research into human hearing? I've searched WorldCat in the hope that some library out there might still hold 16mm prints and maybe this film. Found only a video set released one year after von Bekesy died. There's a faculty member here who thinks he used such a film in his teaching 25 years ago (is certain the video set I found in WorldCat couldn't be what he's looking for) but can't recall the title or where he may have gotten the film, so long ago. Anyway, though there once was a 16mm collection at Minnesota and maybe he got it from there that collection is kaput. The service was closed in 1998 and my library nixed the idea of keeping the films. Thanks for any advice.
