Extractions: Technical U. of Berlin, Germany Mathematical Knowledge Management is an exciting new field in the intersection of mathematics and computer science. We need efficient, new techniques - based on sophisticated formal mathematics and software technology - for taking fruit of the enormous knowledge available in current mathematical sources and for organizing mathematical knowledge in a new way. On the other side, due its very nature, the realm of mathematical information looks as the best candidate for testing innovative theoretical and technological solutions for content-based systems, interoperability, management of machine understandable information, and the Semantic Web.

Extractions: Certificate in Mathematics Enrichment Teaching within the Framework for Grades K-8 The 1992 Mathematics Framework for California Public Schools calls for fundamental change in "the mathematics we teach, how we teach it, and to whom." This new Certificate in Mathematics Enrichment supports K-8 teachers as they implement the recommendations of the Framework. This program was designed especially for teachers, in cooperation with the Mathematics Department and the Center for Math Education at CSUSB. You will discover that you need not possess a strong mathematical background or be particularly mathematically inclined to be successful. The Framework identifies eight strands of mathematics content, including such traditional areas as numbers and geometry, and less familiar ones like discrete math, and patterns and functions. Each course in the program will focus on one or more of these strands. Those who complete the program will gain an overview of all the content areas and their connections. The Framework also calls for classrooms in which students work in groups as well as individually, carry out extended projects as well as short exercises, and can choose appropriate mathematical tools, whether computers, calculators, or paper and pencil. The courses in this program model this kind of environment and provide teachers with engaging, hands-on activities to take back to the classroom.

Extractions: Among the many resources we have available in our Regional Alliance library at TERC in Cambridge are excellent mathematics materials. We have Investigations in Number, Data, and Space for grades 2-5 (soon to be updated to include grade 1), developed at TERC and published by Dale Seymour Publications. The curriculum offers students meaningful mathematical problems, emphasizes depth in mathematical thinking rather than superficial exposure to a series of fragmented topics, and is designed to communicate mathematics content and pedagogy to teachers. Staff development is recommended for this curriculum and is available through TERC. We also have Box It or Bag It Mathematics, for K-2 grade, published by The Math Learning Center in Salem, Oregon. This curriculum is strongly activity-based and genuinely fun for children. Mathlands , published by Creative Publications, is another K-6 curriculum available for your consideration in our library. For middle/junior high school we have the first year of Connected Mathematics
