So, I have decided to put this material here, having provided it with the answers to the common questions. collected articles start I'm going to send some problems from the book Vasil'ev N.B, Egorov A.A. "The problems of the All-Soviet-Union mathematical competitions",-Moscow.:Nauka. 1988 ISBN 5-02-013730-8. (in Russian). Those problems were submitted for the solving on the competition between the pupils of 8, 9, or 10 forms for 4 hours. So they do not contain something of the advanced topics, all of them can be solved by a schoolboy. They can not go out of the common school plan bounds. Most of the problems are original and the book contains all the necessary references. I am not going to translate all the book, so I shall not send the solutions. Please, accept those messages as they are, to say more exactly as I can. I have to do my job, and this is hobby only, but nevertheless, that should be enjoyable to solve those problems.     Extractions: Every autumn, the University of Maryland organizes a High School Mathematics Competition, open to high school students enrolled in Maryland or the District of Columbia. The Competition provides students stimulation, feedback and the opportunity for achievement. There are cash prizes and Edward Krahn Scholar opportunities, which vary from year to year. The competition consists of two examinations. Generally, over 2000 students take the Part I examination. Students who score well on the Part I exam are invited to participate in Part II of the Competition (a considerably more challenging exam). The exams require a sound knowledge of high school mathematics up to, but not including, calculus. Both parts require mathematical insight and ingenuity. The Competition began in 1979 under the leadership of Brit Kirwan, then chair of the Mathematics Department. The first Competition was organized by Professor Gertrude Ehrlich. On Thursday, April 6 th , Professor Robyn Russow will present Mathemagic. Her magical feats will involve mathematics. Her performance will be held in the science lecture hall, room 110, of the Dragun Building. Dr. S. Brent Morris, Senior Mathematician at the National Security Agency, will present "Magic Tricks, Card Shuffling, and Dynamic Computer Memories" from 2:30 to 3:30 in the science lecture hall, room 110, of the Dragun Building. This talk begins with a magic trick and a scientific analysis of card tricks. This leads to a brief study of card scuffling and the introduction of the perfect shuffle and its mathematics. Formulas are developed that describe the movement of any card in a deck after any sequence of perfect shuffles, and this in turn is used to design a dynamic computer memory. Finally, we show the accessing algorithm for the dynamic memory, the movement formula for perfect shuffles, and the card trick all use the same mathematical principle. Attendees should bring a deck of cards to the talk. Mathematics projects will be exhibited in various places around campus. There will be a display in the foyer of the Florestano Building, the Careers Building Rotunda, and in other locations on campus.

    Extractions: The contest, which will begin at 8 a.m., will be in Galloway Hall and Butler Lecture Hall. Dr. Sethuraman says the students will be divided up into two teams, as there will be 180 students on campus. Students will have 1 1/2 hours to complete a 30-question written test. During the team competitions, each team will be given 12 questions to answer. A quick-answer session will follow, and students will have to answer 16 questions, each question in 1 1/2 minutes. Dr. Sethuraman says that some students competing are already taking advanced calculus courses at ASU, and many of the coaches of the high schools are alumni of the university. He says that the contest committee would like to keep in touch with the coaches and see how they perform in their curriculum.

    Extractions: VOLUME 31 NUMBER 18 MAY 13, 1999 Pitt sophomore Dragos Ghioca outscored 2,569 mathematics undergraduates from nearly 420 colleges and universities to rank 10th in the annual William Lowell Putnam Mathematics Competition. Pitt ranked first among all public colleges and universities in the United States and 13th overall in the Putnam team competition. Ghioca is a student in the Department of Mathematics and holds a Chancellor's Scholarship from the University Honors College (UHC). Other Pitt math majors in the competition were junior Jonathan Holland and freshmen Liviu Ignat and Chad Newell. Ignat, als o a Chancellor's Scholar in UHC, ranked 34th. Holland, a published Brackenridge Fellow with UHC, and Newell ranked 502 and 827, respectively. Pitt is the only Pennsylvania institution and the only public university in the United States among the top 26 schools competing. The University's 13th place finish in the team competition with Ghioca, Ignat and Holland is two positions above its rank last year. "There is no more revered turf in undergraduate competitions than the Putnam," says Alec Stewart, dean of the Honors College. "Dragos Ghioca, Liviu Ignat, Jonathan Holland and Chad Newell are first class. The leadership of mathematics professor and Putnam committee chair Greg Constantine on behalf of undergraduate attainment has once again brought us great pride."

    Extractions: Mathematics Competition GRANVILLE Denison University junior Michael Khoury Jr. of Rochester Hills, Mich., achieved a perfect score to place first in the U.S. National Collegiate Mathematics Championship held in August. The annual event was part of the summer meeting of the Mathematical Association of America held in Madison, Wis. Michael Khoury Jr. '03 Representing Denison, Khoury competed against approximately 35 other students from 30 other colleges. Each year colleges across America participate in monthly problem solving competitions on their own campuses and then select their best students to attend the U.S. National Finals. The problems required significant insight and mental agility. Also, the students had to successfully complete each problem before moving onto the next. Khoury achieved a perfect score, according to his faculty adviser Don Bonar, holder of the George R. Stibitz Distinguished Professor of Mathematics Chair at Denison. Last spring, Khoury was a member of the Denison Math Team which placed first in the Five College Mathematics Competition held at Kenyon College. Khoury also received a "Honorable Mention" in the most recent Putnam Mathematics Competition. He tied for 28th place out of 2,818 students from 434 colleges. The William Lowell Putnam Mathematics Competition has been held on an annual basis since 1938, and it is considered to be the most challenging mathematics competition in which undergraduates are able to participate.
