    Extractions: Richard Threadgill, Feb 2001 Lots of techies give really lousy progress reports, and are basically hell on their managers for no good reason. This is particularly bad for sysadmin types, systems programmers, and other people who love math too much. I spent several hours with a coworker last week discussing "how not to be an employee of doom," and these are my notes from that conversation. First an aside - these notes offer advice both for techies in general, who often have a pretty sucky model for the pressures on, and motivations of, their management, and advice for systems and math people in particular. Math people have two classes of problems: trivial problems, which merely need typing at, or the identification of the existing solution; and unsolved problems, which require thinking, hypothesis, and potentially experimentation. This leads them to often front-load their work, going through the list of their tasks and performing the "hard" tasks first because the others are "just work." Systems people have a strong tendency to be moderately ADD as well, because its a really useful trait in a high-interrupt environment where you need to context-switch pretty completely.

This includes a list of job postings organized by country and state. In addition, you can sign up for an email service whereby you are automatically emailed all new job postings. Finally, you can submit an electronic c.v. which employers can access, and you can register for the job fairs at the annual AMS meetings. Most of these services can be found at the e-Math Employment Information and Services or can be reached indirectly from the AMS's e-Math home page SIAM News includes academic job advertisements (follow the "Professional Oppotunities" link). These tend to be more applied than the jobs listed by the AMS. Chronicle of Higher Education has academic and non-academic job ads. Use the searchable index to find mathematics jobs. You do not need to subscribe to the Chronicle to search their job listings.

I am afraid that he will get lost in the middle of the page. I am trying to decide which approach would be best for a child that gets lost in Math. Saxon: no color, little stimulation, lots of review. Can order the workbook version. Singapore: Colorful, stresses understanding of a concept. The numbers just seem to spin in his head. He can't focas to write down the accurate answer. What is the best approach?
