Extractions: FEMINISM, THE BODY, AND THE MACHINE by Wendell Berry Some time ago Harpers reprinted a short essay of mine in which I gave some of my reasons for refusing to buy a computer. Until that time, the vast numbers of people who disagree with my writings had mostly ignored them. An unusual number of people, however, neglected to ignore my insensitivity to the wonders of computer enhancement. Some of us, it seems, would be better off if we would just realize that this is already the best of all possible worlds, and is going to get even better if we will just buy the right equipment. Harpers published only five of the letters the editors received in response to my essay, and they published only negative letters. But of the twenty letters received by the Harpers editors, who forwarded copies to me, three were favorable. This I look upon as extremely gratifying. If these letters may be taken as a fair sample, then one in seven of Harpers readers agreed with me. If I had guessed beforehand, I would have guessed that my supporters would have been fewer than one in a thousand. And so I suppose, after further reflection, that my surprise at the intensity of the attacks on me is mistaken. There are more of us than I thought. Maybe there is even a significant number of us.
Worms Prove Passwords Do Matter Worms prove Passwords Do Matter By Dennis Fisher March 11, 2003, It then looks fornetwork shares on the remote machine, and if it finds any, it tries to copy http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1492651,00.asp
Extractions: Security experts and overworked systems administrators for years have implored users to pick hard-to-guess passwords and to change them often. But many users persist in using their names or children's birthdays as log-on credentials, and two recent worm outbreaks have shown why that's such a risky practice. Deloder, the latest worm to hit vulnerable Windows machines, and a version of Lovgate both use a list of common passwords in an attempt to compromise computers. Lovgate began spreading in late February, while Deloder just appeared on the scene last week.

Extractions: While the Cult's frontman Ian Astbury is indeed a practicing Buddhist, this was no place for preaching, and when the silhouettes of guitarists Billy Duffy and Mike Dimkich appeared against the screen as the two started chugging out the opening locomotive riff of "Rise," it became clear that the only higher power that would be called to was the God of Rock. As the screen dropped to the ground and the band launched into its kinetic music, the ritual began and the crowd, which included Gene Simmons of Kiss and Scott Ian of Anthrax, surrendered to the band.

Extractions: Prove It Laura couldn't believe her luck when she found a house to rent the first day she started looking. Not only was it within walking distance of her job, the landlord wanted fifty dollars less than what she had budgeted. When Paul came home from work and found her packing books, he paused inside the door, palpable indignation and disbelief rendering him silent for a few precious seconds. Then he launched into a tirade. "You cant afford to move out. You dont know how to live by yourself. Youll never make it." She knelt there, hands trembling, and pictured his smug smile and arrogant stance. She knew if she looked up now, shed stop packing and hed win. Just like the other times. She continued pulling books off the shelf and stacking them in the box, but Paul's presence had revived her languishing fears and doubts. Hes right, she thought. My salary at the library won't be enough. I cant afford to move out, but Ill die if I stay here. Ill wither up and die. She hired some local college students with a van to move her things. "You'd better not try to take anything you didn't have when you moved in," Paul said and gestured to the computer. "I've kept records and receipts for everything. I paid for it all."

Here is a link to the story From the article, one of the great arguments for software that doesn't need a file cabinet of certificates: "Microsoft, like most software companies, includes contracts with its merchandise explaining that the company reserves the right to ask consumers at any time for proof of purchase and an inventory of what is being used. The rule applies not only to governments and privately owned companies but to individuals." Aren't you glad you use Open Source?

Extractions: Technology Solutions for the Distribution Industry HOME SITEMAP CONTACT SEARCH ... Events by Richard Vurva Do most customers recognize the value of your services? Probably not. For example, services provided on a daily basis include helping companies lower or eliminate inventory carrying costs, reduce delivery times, cut machine downtime, institute on-site inventory management programs, and providing applications expertise in cutting tools, abrasives and other product categories. But most customers don't recognize the value of those services. Why? In the past, G.I. salespeople did what virtually all distributors do. They unwittingly sold themselves short by lumping their services into the catchall phrase "value-added". The problem is that many customers translate "value-added" into "free services." It's all the things distributors do for customers for which they're never billed. They come to expect it. That has begun to change since G.I. put into practice a value-added documentation program. The purpose is to quantify the company's value-added services by putting them in black and white. (See sidebar, "General Industrial Profit Enhancement Report.")

Their goal is to ruin the US economy during Bush Administration (for details see invisibility technology and its current functions on http://members.aol.com/alanyu5/part1b1.htm The Congressional report on 9/11 attack has been released. NEWSWEEK magazine exclusively revealed some information from the report. These information prove that invisible personnel did have prior knowledge about these hijackers and their plans. Now, I would use the NEWSWEEK article and analyze it from the perspective of an expert (who has good understanding on invisible personnel's activities and their international organization). Why do I use this way to analyze the sources? Because it is the only way to reveal the truth of invisible personnel's involvement in the 9/11 attacks What did these invisible personnel (involved agents, police and recruited operatives) knew about these hijackers' activities and plans in the US. Without knowledge of invisibility technology and invisible personnel's organization and activities, people can be easily misled by superficial explanation provided by some sources and invisible personnel's claims.

Extractions: MDDI Article Index An June 1997 Column Telemedicine: Seeking to Prove Itself in Niche Markets Although telemedicine was first envisioned as an aid for the general practitioner, it has so far been successful only in bringing together medical specialists. What is the current state of this technology, and what can we expect in the future? When it was in its infancy just a few years ago, telemedicine was envisioned as a revolution in health-care information delivery for general practitioners. Yet its promise for general medicine has yet to be realized. Instead, this technology has been used so far in the medical specialties only, where there is a need to bring together a relatively few qualified doctors, who may be separated by large distances. Maureen Ryan of VTEL (Austin, TX) says telemedicine is now used in specialties where it makes "financial sense." Photo courtesy of VTEL For example, videos of patient skin, inner ears, and internal tissues obtained through endoscopes are sent out among specialists for consultation. Even the telemedicine systems that are currently installed in patients' homes send data only to specialists. Electrocardiographs are sent to be examined by cardiologists and the vital signs of low-birthweight infants are sent to neonatologists.

Extractions: As we know, machine cannot PROVE Godel's Incompleteness theorem, but can we human do it? Of cause not! So we have no advantage over the machines at all in terms of PROOF. However, the distinction is we simply KNOW it is true, but machines do not. My question is that even a machine CAN PROVE it, does it mean that the machine KNOW it? How can we simply imply that machines do not KNOW the theorem because they CANNOT PROVE it. Or in other words, since we CANNOT PROVE it, how can we say we KNOW it? Is that logical? Thanks for comments

Mostly, I guess, I've just been way too boring lately. Which, of course, is no kind of excuse, let alone a good one. Seems to me that one starts to get more boring as soon as one starts to think of onesself as boring. Or something. Yeah, so I'm no Dorothy Parker. What else is new? So, why am I trying to start up again? Mostly because it's good for me. Keeps me on my toes and stuff. I thought I'd be too distracted from work to think about it for a little while (I really am going to graduate this year. No, seriously), but I think it helps me get down to business. A forced distraction, if you will. So, anyways, I'm gonna try it again. Maybe seriously, maybe lazily/occasionally. Que sera, sera, right?
