Zygo MetroPro software and the ABS geometry or magnetic head analysis optional software package is required. Calculations and ABS Geometry The calculation of most ABS geometry parameters is done based on "best fit" surfaces to the actual measured head surface. The equations for these best fit surfaces are: Plane Sphere Cylinder Note that if Sphere and Cylinder fits are compared, we find that, All fits are done in a "least-squares" sense and the x y positions of the individual data points are determined relative to the origin ( x y =0) at the "center" of the data. MetroPro defines the center at the midpoint between the left and right extremes and the top and bottom extremes of valid data, after masking. In the case of a single rail, the center (+) is located within the region of data. In the case of a two rail geometry, the center of the data is not actually a valid data point. Choice of the origin has no effect on the final results, it is done for calculational convenience.

The orientation test determines whether a point lies to the left of, to the right of, or on a line or plane defined by other points. The incircle test determines whether a point lies inside, outside, or on a circle defined by other points. Each of these tests is performed by evaluating the sign of a determinant (see the figure below). The determinant is expressed in terms of the coordinates of the points. If these coordinates are expressed as single or double precision floating-point numbers, roundoff error may lead to an incorrect result when the true determinant is near zero. In turn, this misinformation can lead an application to fail or produce incorrect results. One way to solve this problem is to use exact arithmetic. Unfortunately, traditional libraries for arbitrary precision floating-point arithmetic are quite slow, and can reduce the speed of an application by one or two orders of magnitude.

It has grown into a recognized discipline with its own journals, conferences, and a large community of active researchers.
