Extractions: The Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility provides San Francisco residents with a safe place to dispose of unwanted toxic materials from their homes. The most common wastes received are leftover paint, motor oil from cars, thinners, spray cans and old garden products, such as pesticides and fertilizers. Directions to the San Francisco Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility The facility is located Sanitary Fill Company (office address id 501 Tunnel Ave.) in the southeast part of San Francisco. To reach the facility, drive south on Highway 101 and exit at the 3Com/Candlestick Point Exit. At the end of the exit ramp, go straight on Beatty Avenue until you reach Tunnel Ave. Turn right on Tunnel Ave. After one block, turn right on Recycle Road. Go about 500 feet to the facility, which is a large gray building on the left of the scale house, with a white sign.

Very few think of their homes. Yet much of the hazardous waste going into our lands and waters is coming from our homes. Some of the more common products we use that are potentially hazardous include: Bleach Disinfectant Window Cleaner Drain Cleaner Over Cleaner Furniture Polish Spot Remover Nail Polish Remover Hair Spray Car Polish Engine Degreaser Mothballs Bug Spray Flea Powder Turpentine Oil Based Paint Oil/Antifreeze Shoe Polish When we finish with these, the containers or remaining residue should not be dumped into our trash, down the sink or toilet or into storm drains. Containers and any remaining residue should be kept separate and disposed of properly. Some will need to be taken to a hazardous waste disposal collection site for transportation and proper disposal in a hazardous waste landfill. These landfills, specifically designed for hazardous waste, usually have a double liner and other safety precautions to keep the chemicals from seeping into the ground and contaminating water systems and plant life. The solution for many years has been to export it to third world countries who have more lenient environmental regulations, are in greater need of funds and where concern for the health of the population is minimum or non-existent. Following several waste trafficking related scandals in the 1980s, on March 22, 1989, the Basel Convention was adopted, with the goal of controlling movement and disposal of all kinds of toxic and hazardous waste. Initially the Convention -in force as of May 5, 1992- was criticized by environmental groups because it failed to effectively ban toxic waste exports to poor countries, succeeding only in excluding Antarctica as a destination for such waste. In 1995, however, and as a result of pressure exerted by several countries and environmental groups, an amendment to the Convention was introduced, prohibiting all exports of contaminating material. This ban will only enter into force when the amendment is ratified by 62 of the countries party to the Convention (as of May 2003, 36 countries had already done so). In any event, the scope of the Convention is severely limited by the fact that the United States, the largest toxic residue producer in the world, is not among the signatories.
