This demonstrates clearly that the cooling event was not confined to the North Atlantic, as was once supposed, but was a major global shift in climate. Plants that trap insects and digest them as a source of nutrition have reversed the usual course of events and adopted the ecological role of a predator. Ants seem to have taken up this activity and regularly rob insectivorous plants that use a sticky trap method of predation. Experiments show that 47 percent of trapped insects can be removed by ants within a 24-hour perioda significant loss of nutrients to the plant.
