Extractions: A coalition of environmental, agriculture and taxpayer groups detail fundamental flaws in a $2.3 billion proposal to expand locks on the Upper Mississippi and Illinois rivers. A new report, Twice Cooked Pork: The Upper Mississippi River-Illinois Waterway Navigation Study, concludes that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers revised study is based on "an unprecedented combination of mistakes, miscalculations and misstatements." Read the press release Proponents of navigation expansion have long maintained that the only way to eliminate traffic delays on the Mississippi River is to expand the locks, a project that would cost over $2 billion, take decades to complete and do little to benefit small farmers, rural communities or the environment. On the contrary, a number of non-structural measures exist that would increase navigation efficiency immediately, cost much less to implement and better benefit everyone involved. Three new publications explore these non-structural measures. Read the IATP press release Upper Mississippi River and Illinois Waterways: How to Reduce Waiting Times of Vessels While Using the Current Infrastructure : A report by the University of Missouri-St. Louis' Center for Transportation Studies and commissioned by IATP examines the cause of traffic delays on the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers and recommends strategies for reducing these delays.

Extractions: Monday through Friday Place a classified HERE! Home Calendar Jo Stuart ... About us Scammers use name of I.R.S. to steal data By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Another identity theft scam has surfaced in Costa Rica, and this time the Internet is not the source. A local real estate broker said he received a FAX transmission that said it was from the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, the tax collecting agency. The document, identifying itself as I.R.S. Form W-8BEN, asked for such detailed personal information as bank account numbers, passport numbers, mothers maiden name and Social Security number. The document is supposed to be the way foreigners and non-resident U.S. citizens report tax liability to the I.R.S. and the scammers have been known to warn recipients that a big penalty will be assessed if they do not fill out the form. In fact, the form is a doctored I.R.S. form, and the Utah telephone number to which it was supposed to be Faxed when completed is that of a scammer. The broker wasnt fooled. He did an Internet search and found out that the scam has been around since 2002.

Bhutan - Countrywatch.com Features an overview of news, maps, general information, language, history, economy, agriculture and environment. http://www.countrywatch.com/cw_country.asp?vcountry=20
Extractions: Canadians are becoming increasingly concerned about the impact agricultural practices can have on environmental and human health. Agriculture's long-term vitality and prosperity depend on its ability to co-exist sustainably with the natural environment. This involves a blending of environmental, social, and economic opportunities that strives to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Because of the many benefits associated with a consistent approach, the Ministers of Agriculture have committed to work together and with industry towards a set of common goals for improving environmental performance on farms. These meaningful and measurable goals aim to achieve improvements in the quality of our water, soil and air, and in biodiversity. Specific areas where progress towards these goals could be demonstrated are: Air : Reduce agricultural risks to the health of air and the atmosphere. Water : Reduce agricultural risks to the health of water resources. Soil : Reduce agricultural risks to the health of soils.
