Centre For Rural Social Research Social Aspects of agriculture, environment Sustainability. Members of theagriculture, environment and Sustainability research group include. http://www.csu.edu.au/research/crsr/research/about_4.htm
Extractions: The Centre for Rural Social Research (CRSR) conducts research into the social aspects of environmental management, especially in agriculture, with specific reference to the Murray-Darling Basin. Qualitative and quantitative methods including Rapid Rural Appraisal, focus group discussions, unstructured interviewing, as well as large scale social surveys and GIS mapping have been undertaken to research, amongst other things, the social basis of adoption of sustainable agriculture. Research projects undertaken by CRSR in this area include:- Australian Farm Families' Experiences of Drought Severe drought has long term economic and social costs to all Australians. Research for this project focused on farm families in the Central Queensland and Riverina areas who have lived - and are still living - through drought, and explored the sociological variables which influence attitudes to drought. The work was conducted by CRSR researcher, Dr Ian Gray, in conjunction with the Rural Social and Economic Research Centre at Central Queensland University. The knowledge gained through the `lived' experience of drought has been analysed and interpreted in order to bring that knowledge to other farm families in Australia. It will also enable an informed long term management strategy to be developed which will assist rural adjustment and counselling agencies in their activities. A report was published by the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation and is available at www.rirdc.gov.au.

Extractions: This is achieved by the use of physical barrier systems, replacing agrochemicals for weed, insect and disease control. Public anxiety about food safety and health is addressed by Terraseed technology through reducing the threat of salmonella and E.coli contamination in fresh salad crops. The technology also has applications in pharmaceutical crops and herbs. Terraseed is proven in organic farming for salad and vegetable production and makes large-scale organic production viable, where consumer demand exceeds the ability of leading growers to supply.

Extractions: Welcome to Nizwa.NET Nizwa is one of the largest cities in Oman and the capital of the interior region. It has a wealth of cultural and ancient landmarks, most prominent is Nizwa fort built over a period of 12 years and located in the middle of downtown. The fort is surrounded by ancient traditional souqs (markets) where the locals trade in traditional as well as imported merchandise, from vegetables to jewelry. Nizwa is an oasis in the enclosed by a series of mountains upon which the famous green mountain ( al Jabal al Akhdar ) lies. The city is also at cross roads that lead to southern Oman as well as the Dhahirah and Sharqiah regions. Nizwa.NET is educational, public, web site with the purpose of spreading awareness about the country of Oman in the Middle East. Nizwa.NET started as "Nizwa Oasis" and hosted by geocities but due to the popularity of the site, it was often blocked when bandwidth reached its maximum limits. Nizwa.NET was born out of that site with pretty much the same information but with more flexibility and ease of navigation. Besides tourist information, the site focuses on issues related to agriculture and the environment, which reflects my field of study.
ES & ANTHRO 149 Agriculture, Environment And Society World agriculture, Food and Population Environmental Studies149/Anthropology149/Anthropology 204. Next time taught Fall 2003 by David Cleveland. http://www.anth.ucsb.edu/faculty/clevelan/Courses/149/149intro.htm
Extractions: The challenge to agriculture has never been greater than it is at the beginning of the 21st century. World food production over the last 12,000 years has been able to keep up with the demand for food as farming spread from its centers of origin, and as farmers developed new crop varieties and technologies. Modern industrial agriculture and the green revolution have greatly increased yields. However, the human population of 6+ billion is currently doubling every 40 years, the negative impact of agricultural production on the Earth's natural resource base is increasing, the social and economic structure of agriculture is changing dramatically, and many millions of people continue to be malnourished.
