Extractions: Mike Creech and Carol Fedora A Beginner's Guide to Geographic Information Systems came about as a joint project between myself and Mike Creech as part of our respective Directed Field Experiences, in the Engineering Library and the Map Library, here at the University of Michigan. Originally, we were going to put together a guide to GIS resources on the Internet. As we began to view the existing net resources, we realized that there were already many indexes to GIS internet resources. However, there were very few, if any, documents that actually took the time to explain in detail the basics of GIS. Most of the existing resources give only brief definitions. Our goal with this page is to provide a more thorough explanation of the fundamental concepts of geographic information systems to the GIS novice. The guide will also provide some of the best internet examples that we have found representing government, academic and commercial GIS activity.
