Pro-Music-News Magazine 8th Miyazaki International Music Festival May 21 to June 3, 2003 - Miyazaki City, Kyushu, Japan The seventh Miyazaki International Music Festival was dedicated to the memory of Isaac Stern who had passed away the previous autumn. Isaac Stern, the great violinist, musician and educator, had been the guiding spirit of the festival ever since its inception in 1996. This year marks a new beginning and the organizers made special efforts to secure some of the most famous names in the classical music world. The curtain will rise at Isaac Stern Hall on May 21 on a concert with orchestral accompaniment by Kathleen Battle, no doubt one of the world's most acclaimed operatic sopranos. The cello will feature prominently on May 25 with Jian Wang, the award winning Chinese cellist, playing Haydn's 2nd (D major) and Boccherini's 9th (B flat major) cello concertos, with a chamber orchestra conducted by Pinchas Zukerman. The program for the violin master class included performances by sophomore Jina Lee; Minjae Kim, a second-year candidate in the Graduate Performance Diploma Program; and first-year GPD candidate Nikos Pittas. The Peabody students were joined by 15-year-old Brendan Conway, a fellow at the National Symphony Orchestra. Four principal players of the National Arts Centre Orchestra presented master classes for their respective areas: Karen Donnelly, trumpet; Amanda Forsyth, cello; Kimball Sykes, clarinet; and Lawrence Vine, horn. Celebrated violinist and conductor Pinchas Zukerman performed in both capacities for the "Winter" movement from Vivaldi's The Four Seasons and delivered a stunning account as soloist in Bruch's Concerto no. 1 for Violin and Orchestra. Respighi's The Birds and Bernstein's Symphonic Dances from West Side Story added sugar and spice respectively to the bill. Music Director Leonid Grin was regrettably absent due to a family emergency, but Assistant Conductor Yair Samet proved able and engaging at the podium in the maestro's stead. In Bruch's emotionally turbulent concerto, Samet maintained close rapport between the orchestra and Zukerman, holding tight to his soloist's elastic phrase shaping without getting wrapped up in it. Samet's clear communication of the score elicited clean ensemble work from his players, making the utmost of the contrasts between the violin's rhapsodizing and the orchestra's primly stated episodes. The ensemble work was unwieldy at times, especially in the first movement, where a lack of coordination in the cellos' pizzicato accompaniments was particularly distracting. Lapses in momentum made the finale a mixed bag; the alternations between Zukerman's driving solo work and the corresponding orchestral episodes rendered the latter feeble in comparison.

Zukerman opens symphony season By Stephanie Kendrick Star-Bulletin Violinist Pinchas Zukerman has a firm idea of how the job of conducting an orchestra should be done. Rule one: "It's important to remember not to get in the way. "Once you start the car it doesn't need you. It just needs you to direct." He's not being a prima donna. As well as performing as a soloist, Zukerman has been a conductor for 30 years and is currently music director of the National Arts Centre Orchestra of Canada. He will be in soloist mode at the Honolulu Symphony's gala opener tonight. He has appeared in Hawaii before, but has never worked with the symphony's music director Sam Wong. Wong is looking forward to the encounter and respects Zukerman's philosophy. "That's absolutely true. I'm of the same way," said Wong. "I'm not a micromanager." Zukerman will play Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D Major, which he praised for its elegance. "It's a very simple piece, but what it does is amazing. It shows Beethoven's genius," Zukerman said.
