She has studied Yiddish singing and Jewish musical arranging and composition with Michael Alpert, Alan Bern, and other members of Brave Old World, the Klezmatics, and the Klezmer Conservatory Band. Her passion for Yiddish tango is the synthesis of her love for Yiddish music and for Argentine tango. Jenny has been researching, collecting, and performing Yiddish tango music since 1993. In January 1998, she traveled to Buenos Aires to study tango dancing and to research Jewish influence in tango composition and performance. To date, she has collected over 150 tangos with Yiddish lyrics, as well as dozens of tangos by Jewish composers. With David Robboy, she was a founding member of the Portland Yiddish Theatre Ensemble. In the Spring of 1996, her 20th century classical composition A Klezmer Suite: Trern, Ayz, Mabl was performed at Portland State University by Andrew Ehrlich, Mike Curtis, and Genia Shadrin. In the Spring of 1999, she performed her 20th-century classical composition, Shtil, Mayn Corazon, at Marylhurst University with Kira Whiting, Mzuri Robertson, and Jim Ormond.

The Rise and Fall of Popular Music
by Donald Clarke
Chapter 12 The Early 1950s: Frustration and Confusion After the Second World War the twentieth century seemed to be the American century. The only nation to come out of the war healthier than when it went in was the USA; the Marshall Plan helped rebuild Europe, while at home the Depression was over, and a great many ex-soldiers were taking advantage of the GI Bill to acquire further education, an opportunity that had mostly been denied their parents. During the war the income of the average white family had doubled, but the income of the average black family had tripled; industry was working flat out to supply consumers (a new buzz-word) with everything they wanted, and the perfect society seemed to be just around the corner. Could we not invent anything we needed? There were unseen difficulties ahead, but the biggest problem facing the record business as the decade turned appeared to be technological confusion. The invention of microgroove records started the battle of the speeds, which meant dislocation in the industry and headaches for retailers. Mainstream popular music itself in the post-war years became anodyne, as though the hole at the centre of it previously occupied by the big bands could be filled only with marshmallow.

A marathon runner. A one-time professional singer in a pop and rock band (who has since scaled back to chorale tenor). A collector of fine wines, and a window shopper for the vintages he'd love to own. A scientist whose teaching and research take place at the intersection of mathematics and computer science, and whose appreciation for the Jesuit tradition of education includes a commitment to the liberal arts, a keen interest in academic innovation, and a strong belief in the value of service learning. Meet Dr. Timothy Law Snyder, who will join Fairfield University as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences on July 1, 2001. Having spent the last fourteen years at Georgetown University - as a faculty member, department chair, and Dean of Science - Dr. Snyder considers the opportunity to assume a broader role at Fairfield University a matter of "Divine luck." "Fairfield is known as a strong institution, with a strong faculty, strong administration, and bright students," he says. "In making a change, I wanted to remain affiliated with the Jesuit educational tradition because of its intellectual muscle, emphasis on the liberal arts, and commitment to service. Fairfield University is a place attuned to life in all its dimensions, and is actively engaged in service to society. For me, that's a real fit, as is the Jesuit appreciation for other cultures, subcultures, and traditions."

"As we blast into a new century and prepare for the unknown, let's not forget about what brought us to this point: the birth of rhythm'n'blues, the marriage of country and blues and the crazy kid it spawned, rock'n'roll. Vintage soul music and its sacred beginnings. Country is king and swing is back with a vengeance, the sound of the street. And what does it all mean? I'm not sure...but I do know that if we want to live in the future, we'd better understand and embrace our past." Joe Whiting
He Had It Made
As a full moon shone like a spotlight over his home in rural Cincinnatus, 96-year-old jazz trombonist Spiegle Willcox quietly shuffled off life's bandstand for the final time in the early morning hours of Aug. 26. Ever the impish wit, Willcox often drew chuckles from recent audiences by claimingstraight-facedthat, "I'm not afraid of dying; I just don't want to be around when it happens." That's pretty much how it went down, too, as the pioneering jazzman drifted off in his sleep, some four years shy of the century mark. On May 3, 1998, more than 500 well-wishers turned out as Willcox fronted an all-star jazz band at

"If you look at pictures from the Woodstock movie and see these people squatting in the mud, you'd say, 'What are they going to grow up to be? Just look at these guys.' You know, they turned out to be Wall Street. It just goes to show you the flexibility of the human organism that people who would willingly sit in the mud and chant 'No rain' periodically between badly amplified rock groups could suddenly turn out to be the ones to run the U.S. economy."
