Violinist, Ardent Zionist Isaac Stern, 81
By RAPHAEL MOSTEL
FORWARD CORRESPONDENT Isaac Stern, who died of heart failure September 22 at the age of 81, was remembered this week as one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century, but also, like the Jew he was, as one who could not help arguing with the world to make it a better place. Whether organizing, preserving, rainmaking, mentoring, buttonholing or just lending his prestige and presence in solidarity, Stern was seen as an embodiment of the rabbinic principle that one righteous person can make all the difference. "Being a Jew means caring about more than things within your own little sphere," said Stern's daughter, Shira Stern, who carried on the family tradition of making a difference when she became one of the first female rabbis in the United States. "And in that respect, my father was an extraordinary Jew. He was passionate for causes of social justice, for education and for preservation of what is best in society." In a small but typical example, Stern, himself a Russian immigrant, jumped at the chance to be one of the first artists to tour the Soviet Union when Nikita Khrushchev began to open up the country after the death of Stalin in 1956. As anticipated, Stern's violin playing raised the roof in his performances. But he raised a bit more than the roof by also publicly engaging Khrushchev in a debate about artistic freedom, instantly putting the issue on the front burner internationally.

    Worthwhile.
This is a good DVD about Stern's life. It is greatly aided by interesting comments made by a varied group of famous people, violinists and otherwise. These include Eugene Istomin, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Pinchas Zukerman, Zubin Mehta, Jack Benny, Sarah Chang, Gregory Peck, Henry Kissinger, Shimon Peres, Itzhak Perlman, Yo Yo Ma. I watched this DVD after I had seen the excellent one "From Mao to Mozart" which has more depth and many more great extras (this has no video extras). Otherwise I might have given it 4 stars.

was honored by the friendship and support of Isaac Stern, beloved artist and educator, who passed away on September 22, 2001. One of the greatest violin virtuosos of the 20th century, Stern made more than 100 classical recordings in his legendary career. He played Carnegie Hall a remarkable 170 times, and earned the gratitude of classical music lovers worldwide by leading a campaign to save the historic venue from potential demolition.
Mr. Stern was instrumental in helping to establish the National Endowment for the Arts and played a vital role in aiding the careers of many young musicians. He was well known for his support of music education in public schools, and his larger-than-life presence helped raise millions on behalf of classical music organizations and other charities.
From the Top was honored to welcome Isaac Stern as a guest star on a special episode of the radio program taped in Carnegie Hall in April of 2000. His warmth, brilliance, and gregarious nature touched us all, and he will be sorely missed.

    ~ Isaac Stern ~
When I was in college my violin professor spoke of Isaac Stern. He consider what Stern did was the best. He liked his style and technique, and he liked his sound and he liked his musicality. Time passed..............and I became a violin teacher. I bought the usual CD's of the many present day artists and also the greats of the past and enjoyed them. By this time Isaac Stern was not giving as many violin solo performances but was involved in other aspects of the violin music world. I was never fortunate enough to see and hear him in person, and after listening to these CD's, I have recommended his CD's as a very good listening experince for any student studying one of the solos he has recorded. He plays what I would term some of the most "honest" musical translations. I have great respect for Isaac Stern. I am reading his book Isaac Stern - My First 79 Years . He became a fine concert artist through a lot of hard work and he has continued to serve the music world. I think back to my college years and Professor Andrew Lisko speaking about Isaac Stern, and I think I have many years later rediscovered the magic in Stern's playing that my violin professor loved. I dedicate this page to Professor Andrew Lisko of Capital University.
Isaac Stern was born in Kreminiecz, Ukraine July 21, 1920. Isaac came to the United States when he was 10 months old becuase his parents fled the 1921 Russian Revolution. He grew up in San Francisco and studied violin with Naoum Blinder. When he was 14 he played the Brahms Violin Concerto with the San Francisco Symphony. His Carnegie Hall debut was in 1944 with the New York Philharmonic, he was 22 years old. He is Artist Laureate artist with

43 Superintendents Do Their Best Jack Benny
    By ABBY GOODNOUGH
Isaac Stern has coached budding violin virtuosos for decades, but the
students he took on yesterday were a different breed altogether: New
York City's 43 school superintendents, most of whom had never touched a violin before.
The lesson took place at Carnegie Hall, no less.
"Just put the violin on the shoulder, voomp!" Mr. Stern said, lifting
his own delicate instrument to the proper position as the school
administrators looked on. Perhaps not surprisingly, it was easier said than done. "I'm having a problem!" one superintendent exclaimed. "This is hard!" chimed in another. Mr. Stern, 79, was undeterred. He gazed around the room and shouted advice. "You've got it on the wrong shoulder, darling," he told one bewildered student. Harold O. Levy, the interim chancellor, had persuaded Mr. Stern to give the superintendents a lesson in hopes that they would place a higher priority on music instruction for students. The lesson was part of a broader plan to raise the level of intellectual debate among the school system's leaders and make them more culturally attuned. The lesson came directly after the superintendents' monthly meeting with Mr. Levy, at which they started off the day hashing out plans for summer school. After lunch, they filed into a practice room at Carnegie Hall and listened nervously as Mr. Stern told them what to do.

I paterfamilas of a generation of illustrious American musicians, including Yo Yo Ma, Pinchas Zuckerman, and Itzhak Perlman. His greatest triumph as cultural ambassador was perhaps his journey in 1979 to China, captured on an Academy Award winning video, From Mao to Mozart Journey to Jerusalem I saac Stern was less than a year old when his parents, fleeing the Russian Revolution in 1921, emigrated to San Francisco. Thanks to the support of a wealthy patroness, he was able to study at the San Francisco Conservatory, then privately with Louis Persinger. He said he owed most to Naoum Blinder, a violinist of the Russian school and leader then of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, with whom Stern studied from 1932 to 1937. His recital debut came in San Francisco in 1935. The following year he played the Bach double concerto with Blinder and the San Francisco Symphony under Monteux, and the Tchaikovsky concerto with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Klemperer. In 1961 Stern forged a famed trio with the cellist Leonard Rose and the pianist Eugene Istomin, and recorded all the works for piano trio by Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms. When Rose died in 1984 he often teamed up with younger colleagues such as the pianist Emanuel Ax, the cellist Yo Yo Ma, and the flautist Jean-Pierre Rampal to play the chamber-music classics. His regular pianist in solo recitals was Alexander Zakin. In the film
