Isaac Stern
Violin
ISAAC STERN is, without question, one of the foremost violinists of the century. Yet the image he evokes is much larger than that of an out-and-out virtuoso. An influential cultural force, he spearheaded the drive to save Carnegie Hall from demolition; he is Chairman of the America-Israel Cultural Foundation; and his groundbreaking visit to China in 1980 resulted in the Academy Award winning film "From Mao to Mozart - Isaac Stern in China". A champion of contemporary music, premiering works by Dutilleux and Maxwell Davies, he maintains an energetic schedule amongst celebrated orchestras and colleagues around the world. To honour his remarkable recording career as an exclusive artist with CBS/Sony, Stern was made their first "Artist Laureate". He has also been awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society and the Presidential Medal of Freedom - the highest civilian honour in the USA. NEW YORK Tchaikovsky. Dvorak. Mahler. Gershwin. Horowitz. Bernstein. Marian Anderson. Bennie Goodman. Judy Garland. These are only some of the musical geniuses who have performed at Carnegie Hall.
Then there was Isaac Stern, the fiddler who saved it from the demolition crews. But his legacy extends far beyond.
Stern, who died Saturday at age 81 of complications from heart surgery, was one of the foremost violinists of the 20th century.
He was among the most recorded classical musicians in history, making well over 100 recordings, including some that are considered THE definitive interpretations.
He had a knack for discovering and cultivating the talents of succeeding generations. Among them: the violinists Itzhak Perlman and Pinchas Zukerman and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. And he had the astuteness, commitment and gift of gab to raise millions of dollars for the many causes he deemed worthy. "He would get on the elevator, and between my floor and the street floor, he'd get me to agree to do two benefits and make donations to charities," soprano Beverly Sills recalled about her neighbor.

From Mao to Mozart - Isaac Stern in China Editorial Review: Murray Lerner's Oscar-winning film From Mao to Mozart: Isaac Stern in China chronicles with affection and intelligence the great violinist's 1979 visit to China. Stern had accepted the government's invitation to attend a rehearsal and give one recital but instead wound up playing a formal concert, touring two cities, and teaching many master classes due to his overwhelming love for music and even more so for the musicians he met, some as young as 10. Communicating his instructions less through the translator than his energetically gleeful gestures and plosive vocalizations, Stern offers a wealth of technical tips, bowing techniques, and motivational nuggets that all boil down to one theme: don't play the music, live it. Not every moment is joyous; filmed shortly after the final dismantling of the Cultural Revolution

Isaac Stern: a vital violinist
Plucky violinist defied scud missiles and would-be developers
By Benjamin Ivry Special to The Christian Science Monitor
Isaac Stern was more than just a violinist. A glib speaker of uncommon personal force, he organized a group to save Carnegie Hall from demolition in 1961, later serving as president of the Carnegie Hall corporation and chairman of the board of the America-Israel Cultural Foundation, as well as helping to establish the National Endowment for the Arts. He died Sept. 22. In his earlier years, Stern's natural bravado conquered his inveterate reluctance to practice the violin and his self-avowed appetites for making merry. Some informed listeners consider his 1952 recording of the Schubert Quintet in C (Sony Classics 58992 ), in the company of cellists Pablo Casals and Paul Tortelier, to be one of the supreme chamber-music recordings. Other early concerto recordings (reissued on Sony SM3K 45952 and Sony SM3K 45956) also contain forceful playing with lots of personality and verve. In the past 20 years or so, with a decayed technique, Stern could sometimes seem assertive and strident-sounding. As one punning critic expressed it: "He left no tone un-Sterned." Teaching and mentoring His staunch support of some younger string players, from fiddlers Itzhak Perlman and Pinchas Zukerman to cellist Yo-Yo Ma, inevitably caused grumbling among musicians he did not wish to play with.
