"I wanted to get away from the standard French impressionistic repertoire and introduce the audience to several lesser-known but fine French works," says Zinck. The violinist will play Eugène Ysaÿe's Sonata No. 2 ("Obsession," 1924) and will be joined by Bruce J. Barber II, harpsichord, and Scott Cook, continuo, for Jean-Marie Leclair's Sonata in D Major (1743). Pianist Elena Abend will join Zinck for the Poulenc Sonata for Violin and Piano (1943) and Maurice Ravel's Tzigane for violin and piano (1924). Stefan Kartman, cello, will perform Ravel's Sonata for Violin and Cello (1920-22) with Zinck. A native of France, Zinck graduated from the Paris Conservatory and subsequently the Juilliard School as a Fulbright Scholar. He completed his doctoral studies at Temple University in Philadelphia on a Russell Conwell Fellowship. He began his international career in 1992 after winning the prestigious Yehudi Menuhin Trust Award in Paris. Zinck joined the faculty at the Peck School of the Arts this fall after serving as Violin Professor at the University of New Mexico. French Impressions highlights Zinck's eclectic chamber music repertoire, which includes violin-piano, violin-cello, and violin-organ pieces. His two recordings for the Musical Heritage Society label, "The Complete Works for Violin and Piano of Karol Szymanowski" and "Live from France, the Violin-Cello Album" have been highly acclaimed. The Strad Magazine said of his Szymanowski recording: "Zinck has a round and opulent tone, a vibrato bringing moments of sheer ecstasy." Zinck performs on a 1690 J. B. Rogeri violin made in Brescia, Italy.

True to form, Toronto artist John Scott has produced a gritty display of sinister imagery for this new drawing installation. Scott's ominous figures loom large along the walls and across the ceiling, transforming a usually bright and airy room into a place of menace and dark foreboding. Designed specifically for SNACC, Scott's Rorschach Attack (pronounced "roar-shack") sets the stage and tone for an eclectic mix of Winnipeg performing artists In the Lounge Andrew Hunter, SNACC's new Artistic Director, wants to do something with an edge that will make a bold statement about SNACC. Says Hunter, "This program expresses my artistic vision it is multidisciplinary and eclectic but it also has a thematic focus. John Scott's imagery gave me a focus and the selection of artists who will perform in his installation reflect different aspects of Scott's art. Scott's vision of the world is a dark one. It has a gritty street sensibility, but it is also imbued with confidence and compassion. I want to be clear about something. This isn't meant to be a "tight fit" the combination of art and performer are loose and spontaneous, like Scott's work. Three UBC Music professors are nominees in two of Canada's premier music awards. Prof. and pianist Rena Sharon's CBC CD Salon Parisien recorded with violinist Scott St. John was nominated in the Best Classical Album category of the Canadian Independent Music Awards. The second annual awards, or "Indies" as they are known in the industry, were presented at the ceremony in Toronto on Feb. 27, to kick off Canadian Music Week. Prof. Andrew Dawes (violin) and Jane Coop (piano) join Diana Krall, Nelly Furtado and other Canadian and international artists, in being nominated for Juno Awards this year. Dawes and Coop's CD of the complete Beethoven Violin Sonatas on the Skylark label has been nominated in the Best Classical Album: Solo or Chamber Ensemble category. Coop's recording of English Piano Concerti with the CBC Radio Orchestra has been nominated in the Best Classical Album: Large Ensemble or Soloist(s) with Large Ensemble Accompaniment category.
