But all too often the sounds rising from within our own university are overlooked. This is somewhat understandable, considering the Faculty of Music (Edward Johnson Building) is so neatly tucked away, hidden by the ROM and concealed by the Faculty of Law. But every now and again, a student strolling along Philosopher's Walk will hear the gentle melodies rising from the Faculty-a pleasant comfort during these cold snowy days. But over the past year, there has been new music within the department: the passionate tones of violinist Scott St. John. St. John's journey to U of T is a delightful story. It's the tale of a man always on the road, performing with many ensembles, settling in New York, but finding in the end that all roads lead to U of T. His good friend Shauna Rolston, an acclaimed cellist and faculty member, e-mailed him about an opening for a position in chamber music instruction. Up to that point in his life, St. John had never really considered teaching, nor was he looking for openings anywhere. "I hadn't planned it out, but it turned out to be one of the best decisions I ever made," he recalled in a recent interview. And so, after a long road traveled, this one-time prodigy and winner of numerous awards found his niche in the U of T Faculty of Music.

Amici delivers By Davin Raiha Published: Thursday, November 20, 2003 Last Friday, the Amici chamber music ensemble gave a concert of Hungarian folk music at the famous Glenn Gould Studio at the CBC. Formed in 1985 by three talented musicians (Joaquin Valdepenas, David Hetherington, and Patricia Parr), the ensemble has won Juno Awards, and received effusive praise from the press, such as the Globe and Mail, which declared, "the Amici ensemble has become one of the most reliable and amiable purveyors of chamber music in town." Their goals are to explore, discover, and perform the vast repertoire of chamber music, and the group performs widely and has recorded six CDs. And so with much to be expected of them in concert, they delivered with their performance of Hungarian music. The programme for the night included works by Bela Bartok and Johannes Brahms. Bartok was a 20th century Hungarian composer who is quite famous for collecting Eastern European folk songs. Brahms, who wasn't Hungarian at all, was a romantic composer quite moved, late in his life, by Hungarian Gypsy themes. The first concert pieces were a set of Hungarian Folk Melodies by Bartok performed by violinist Scott St. John and cellist David Hetherington. Both performers played the light folk melodies with emotional vigor and strength. Following them, Ida Kavafian (violin), and Patricia Parr (piano) played the technically challenging Bartok Violin Sonata No 2. The Sonata is quite original, and demands innovative playing, which both performers exhibited. The last piece of the night was the famous Brahms Clarinet Quintet. This was played by all the Amici performers; Joaquin Valdepenas, Ida Kavafian, Scott St. John, David Hetherington, and Max Mandel. And like all the other pieces, this was played with emotional and dynamic bravery.

Mr. Bard has performed as soloist with several orchestras including the Toronto Symphony, Kitchener-Waterloo Chamber Orchestra, Edmonton Symphony, and the Strathfield Symphony in Sydney, Australia. He was acting principle clarinetist of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra under Zubin Mehta. KRISTINE BOGYO , cello, was born in Budapest, and grew up in Montreal. She studied with Janos Starker at Indiana University, and with Bernard Greenhouse in New York. Ms. Bogyo has appeared as a soloist with many orchestras including the Montreal Symphony and the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony. She has made recital and chamber music appearances in numerous North American cities including Chicago, Princeton, Santa Fe, Montreal, Vancouver and Toronto, and has participated in many festivals, including the Festival of the Sound, the Orford Festival, Gidon Kremer's festival in Austria and the Grand Teton Music Festival. It was my pleasure well over a decade ago to assist Silverstein for a concert in New York’s Carnegie Hall where he fashioned together some impressive readings of Rimsky-Korsakov and Rachmaninoff with 100 young musicians who had been brought together just for the occasion! I’ll never forget learning from the violin master how to execute “hairpin” dynamics by varying the speed of the bow rather than just exerting pressure on the string. For Sunday’s broadcast I was far from my usual Acoustic Research speakers, within miles of the Papal mass but safely out of the mud and rain. McGill and four other young musicians each received $15,000. "I heard about it in early February," McGill said from New York. "I didn't know that I was under consideration. I just got a phone call, and they told me I couldn't tell anybody." The grants recognize instrumentalists with the potential for a solo career. A committee of musicians and administrators from Lincoln Center and other performing arts organizations make the selections. Previous winners have included violinists Joshua Bell and Sarah Chang, cellist Carter Brey and clarinetist Richard Stoltzman. "It's supposed to make things a little easier for whatever I want to do with my music," said McGill, a Tampa resident. "I could use the money to put on some chamber music concerts I want to do. But other than some concerts and possibly using a portion of the money as a down payment on a new flute, I haven't given it much thought."

A concert "en francais" (Friday January 23) , welcomes the Accordes String Quartet, joined by violinist Scott St. John, to perform Chausson's Concerto for violin, piano and string quartet It is back to our roots in "Essence of Amici II" (Friday March 5) when we re-cap some of the repertoire we first played together more than 15 years ago, combined with the world premiere of a new work by Calgary composer Allan Bell. We close the season with a flourish!
