U of T Music prof Scott St. John juggles teaching with an acclaimed performing career
By Davin Raiha Published: Thursday, January 29, 2004 Scott St. John
For many U of T students, music always plays a key role in daily life. But all too often the sounds rising from within our own university are overlooked. This is somewhat understandable, considering the Faculty of Music (Edward Johnson Building) is so neatly tucked away, hidden by the ROM and concealed by the Faculty of Law. But every now and again, a student strolling along Philosopher's Walk will hear the gentle melodies rising from the Faculty-a pleasant comfort during these cold snowy days. But over the past year, there has been new music within the department: the passionate tones of violinist Scott St. John.
St. John's journey to U of T is a delightful story. It's the tale of a man always on the road, performing with many ensembles, settling in New York, but finding in the end that all roads lead to U of T. His good friend Shauna Rolston, an acclaimed cellist and faculty member, e-mailed him about an opening for a position in chamber music instruction. Up to that point in his life, St. John had never really considered teaching, nor was he looking for openings anywhere. "I hadn't planned it out, but it turned out to be one of the best decisions I ever made," he recalled in a recent interview. And so, after a long road traveled, this one-time prodigy and winner of numerous awards found his niche in the U of T Faculty of Music.

Hungary for chamber music? Amici delivers
By Davin Raiha Published: Thursday, November 20, 2003 Last Friday, the Amici chamber music ensemble gave a concert of Hungarian folk music at the famous Glenn Gould Studio at the CBC. Formed in 1985 by three talented musicians (Joaquin Valdepenas, David Hetherington, and Patricia Parr), the ensemble has won Juno Awards, and received effusive praise from the press, such as the Globe and Mail, which declared, "the Amici ensemble has become one of the most reliable and amiable purveyors of chamber music in town." Their goals are to explore, discover, and perform the vast repertoire of chamber music, and the group performs widely and has recorded six CDs.
And so with much to be expected of them in concert, they delivered with their performance of Hungarian music. The programme for the night included works by Bela Bartok and Johannes Brahms. Bartok was a 20th century Hungarian composer who is quite famous for collecting Eastern European folk songs. Brahms, who wasn't Hungarian at all, was a romantic composer quite moved, late in his life, by Hungarian Gypsy themes.
The first concert pieces were a set of Hungarian Folk Melodies by Bartok performed by violinist Scott St. John and cellist David Hetherington. Both performers played the light folk melodies with emotional vigor and strength. Following them, Ida Kavafian (violin), and Patricia Parr (piano) played the technically challenging Bartok Violin Sonata No 2. The Sonata is quite original, and demands innovative playing, which both performers exhibited. The last piece of the night was the famous Brahms Clarinet Quintet. This was played by all the Amici performers; Joaquin Valdepenas, Ida Kavafian, Scott St. John, David Hetherington, and Max Mandel. And like all the other pieces, this was played with emotional and dynamic bravery.

Scott St. John, violin Guest Conductor: Joseph Silverstein Violinist: Scott St. John C MAJOR SANDWICH LACKS MEAT Joseph Silverstein and the Winnipeg Symphony have had a happy relationship for some years – particularly when he served as Artistic Advisor during the search to replace Bramwell Tovey. It was my pleasure well over a decade ago to assist Silverstein for a concert in New York’s Carnegie Hall where he fashioned together some impressive readings of Rimsky-Korsakov and Rachmaninoff with 100 young musicians who had been brought together just for the occasion! I’ll never forget learning from the violin master how to execute “hairpin” dynamics by varying the speed of the bow rather than just exerting pressure on the string. For Sunday’s broadcast I was far from my usual Acoustic Research speakers, within miles of the Papal mass but safely out of the mud and rain. So what better work than Schubert’s Rosamunde to coax the sun back into the sky very nearly at the same instant as the dark, leisurely introduction threw off its Masonic minor mode - eager to establish the only major tonality that requires neither flats nor sharps.

Florida Orchestra flutist wins career grant
By JOHN FLEMIN published May 7, 2003 Florida Orchestra principal flute Demarre McGill has won the prestigious Avery Fisher Artist Program career grant, awarded Tuesday at Lincoln Center in New York. McGill and four other young musicians each received $15,000. "I heard about it in early February," McGill said from New York. "I didn't know that I was under consideration. I just got a phone call, and they told me I couldn't tell anybody." The grants recognize instrumentalists with the potential for a solo career. A committee of musicians and administrators from Lincoln Center and other performing arts organizations make the selections. Previous winners have included violinists Joshua Bell and Sarah Chang, cellist Carter Brey and clarinetist Richard Stoltzman. "It's supposed to make things a little easier for whatever I want to do with my music," said McGill, a Tampa resident. "I could use the money to put on some chamber music concerts I want to do. But other than some concerts and possibly using a portion of the money as a down payment on a new flute, I haven't given it much thought."

    Bach spin
Lara St. John wants to give classical music more exposure. On her new CD, she uses nontraditional arrangements and instruments to rethink Bach.
By JOHN FLEMING, Times Performing Arts Critic published May 8, 2003 [Publicity photo] Many classical musicians have their own Web sites, but few are quite as entertaining as the one for Lara St. John. It includes the violinist's list of best and worst airlines, her thoughts on the plight of Canadian orchestras and tips on how to get into concerts for free. Would Midori, or Hilary Hahn, or Anne Akiko Meyers include a link to a fan's page hailing her as that "voluptuous vixen of violin virtuosity"? Not likely. St. John, the soloist this weekend with the Florida Orchestra, is as famous for her topless CD cover photo as for her top-level playing of Bach, and it doesn't seem to bother her a bit.

    THE CRITICS RAVE ABOUT AMICI
"...the Canadian Winds, whose debut at a sold-out Glenn Gould Studio under the umbrella of the Amici Chamber Ensemble, was impressive. In Nielsen's Quintet, both horn and bassoon achieved moments of extreme mellowness within rainbows of tonal colour..... the quintet showed manifest discipline and a well-integrated approach.... their treatment of the third movement was authoritative, with solid technique..... In the Mozart Quintet, with Patricia Parr's piano replacing flute, there was much flowing finesse...... an elegantly structured Larghetto. The opening work was Bach's Sonata in G Major with Parr and cellist David Hetherington in delightful form, the busy demands on piano well met and Hetherington caressing his instrument beautifully in the Andante...... a clear case of players creating the exact state of equilibrium that the best Bach warrants, and ornamenting it with feeling." Toronto Star, March, 2003 Easygoing with Amici
"....these three distinguished Toronto musicians..... did not seem to be performing so much as making music.... a better example of chamber music-making would be hard to find to set before the next generation of musicians."
