PROGRAM PROGRAM NOTES Two Pieces for String Octet, Op. 11 Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975) This student work was written in 1925 when Shostakovich was still an advocate of the new Soviet ideology that set out to reform music that was "technically superior in form, but bourgeois in concept." Yet, even under those conditions, the work, especially in the Scherzo, reflects the savage, satiric edge that permeates much of Shostakovich’s music. It was an edge, of course, that was variously supported according to the political whims of the moment. (His first symphony was an instant success, while later works were often attacked for "bourgeois decadence." Still others won the Stalin Prize.) The more somber Prelude is an elegy to the poet Volodya Kurchavov and is reflective of the later symphonies.

Her contribution to the advancement of viola technique has already given her a place in the history of the instrument and has been a source of inspiration not only to other players but also to many composers who have been motivated by her mastery to write especially for the viola. More than 200 pieces have been written for her and more are currently being written of which 37 are concertos , a record matched by no other violist in history. Allied to her technical ability, Rivka Golani’s approach to the instrument is at once passionate and sensitive; and her performances, both on record and in the concert hall, reveal the originality of interpretation and musicianship of a great artist. The Scènes are in the tradition of Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsodies, Brahms’s Hungarian Dances and Sarate’s Zigeunerweisen, and reflect the nineteenth century’s fondness for romanticized gypsy music as a worthy source of entertainment in middle-class salons and at aristocratic balls. Written over a period of some forty years, these fourteen perfectly crafted showpieces are dedicated individually to many of the period’s most influential figures, several famous violin virtuosi among them. Passionate melodies and furious violinistic pyrotechnics combine to make this set into a classic of the genre.
