In 1981, while studying with Haim Taub in Jerusalem, he made debuts with the Jerusalem Symphony and the Israel Philharmonic. That same year he began his studies with Dorothy DeLay and Jens Ellerman at Aspen. In 1982, after taking first prize in Israel's Claremont Competition, he became a scholarship student at Juilliard, where he worked with Ms. Delay and Hyo Kang.

Performed in a different European city each year, the incomparable Berlin Philharmonic's annual Europakonzert commemorates the orchestra's 1882 founding while celebrating the cultural life of the European community. From the elegant Teatro Massimo opera house in Palermo, Sicily, the 2002 concert features sensational violinist Gil Shaham joining conductor Claudio Abbado in a performance of Johannes Brahms 's "Symphony No. 9, From the New World," as well as the dramatic overture to Giuseppe Verdi 's "Sicilian Vespers." And, leaving the opera house on an intermission stroll, GREAT PERFORMANCES offers viewers a tour of Palermo, showcasing the glorious architecture, lively markets, and musical heritage that have made it one of Italy's most vibrant cities.
Maestro Abbado led the Berlin Philharmonic as they inaugurated the Europakonzert series at Prague's Smetana Hall in 1991, so it seems fitting that he has chosen this Europakonzert, in his native Italy, for his last televised concert as the principal conductor and artistic director of the orchestra. Learn more about Claudio Abbado, who made his conducting debut at Milan's La Scala in 1960; the Berlin Philharmonic; violinist Gil Shaham; and the music from the evening's program in the essay by writer Fred Plotkin. GP : How did you get involved with the Europakonzert in Palermo?
GS : I guess there's a little bit of a back story. I had played the Brahms concerto with Maestro Abbado and the Berlin Philharmonic a couple of years before, and it was part of a larger project. I guess they were doing a Brahms cycle for many years, recording all of the orchestral works the symphonies, the serenades and we were doing the violin concerto and the double concerto for violin and cello. We did the violin concerto, and I guess, for me, it was really like a dream come true. Such a first-class, top-notch orchestra, and Maestro Abbado is somebody I've always admired, somebody I've always loved to work with. We recorded the violin concerto, and I remember that afterwards he had a very scary illness and we didn't know if we would continue, and he pulled out of it heroically and a couple of years later we did the double concerto. This was actually his final tour with the orchestra, and so I was very honored and happy to be a part of that tour, and especially that concert in Palermo. I guess that's kind of how it came about.
GP : Since it was Claudio Abbado's final tour, did you feel any more emotional weight to the performance at Palermo?

Gil Shaham in London (III):
The American violinist Gil Shaham had been in town for two concerts with the Philharmonia under David Zinman. In between those events he gave an extended recital at the Wigmore Hall. On paper, the program looked fascinating, especially as it seemed that one would also have the rare chance to hear the brilliant young Tasmanian violinist Adele Anthony, whom I remember well from my visits to the Aspen Music Festival and who is married to Gil Shaham. Sadly, the whole concert turned out to be a fascinating Shaham-Show and more the kind of insider event for young violinists – there were at least two large orchestra string sections in the audience - than a musically fully rewarding evening for public consumption. Gil Shaham in London (II): Adams, Barber, Copland, Bernstein, Gil Shaham (violin), Philharmonia Orchestra, David Zinman, RFH, 7 th March 2004 (MB)
Gil Shaham’s second concert with the Philharmonia (there will now unexpectedly be a third when he appears as soloist next Saturday in Beethoven’s violin concerto) was everything it should have been – and more. A long-time advocate of Samuel Barber’s exquisite violin concerto (though in this instance he played with a score), he gave the kind of sumptuous performance perhaps only Shaham is capable of delivering. To this day, he remains the most individual sounding violinist to come from that boiler-house of DeLay/Juilliard teaching; at times during his performance he brought a sound to his violin that made him sound close to Mischa Elman, the most distinctively toned violinist of the last century. Throughout, the Philharmonia’s playing was impeccable – as it was during the rest of the concert. Beginning with Adams’ ‘The Chairman Dances’ from his opera

"...superb playing of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under the redoubtable Martyn Brabbins, Andrew Keener's top-notch production values and, most especially, the jaw-dropping virtuosity of Hagai Shaham. Whatever Hubay throws at him, Shaham negotiates it with apparently nonchalant ease and invariably spotless intonation. He possesses the kind of lightweight, quicksilver sound and the fast, narrow vibrato that is ideal in this kind of music, playing throughout with tremendous sweep and passion. Recommended with the utmost enthusiasm."
