Gil Shaham
It isn't hard to find out which young violinists hold promising future. Already a household name in the Classical music world, Gil Shaham bedazzled the world with his mature musicianship and mesmerizing technique. Shaham was born in 1971, in Illinois, USA, the son of two scientists. He grew up in Israel, and made his highly acclaimed début at the age of 10, playing Vivaldi's Four Seasons with Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra under Alexander Schneider. He doesn't stop there. In 1982, he won the Claremont Competition and was admitted to Julliard School in New York, where he studied with Dorothy DeLay and Hyo Kang. And in 1989, he began his studies at Columbia University, New York. In 1989, he stepped in at short notice for Itzhak Perlman in a concert with the London Symphony Orchestra under Michael Tilson Thomas and gave an outstanding performance of Bruch and Sibelius concertos. Since then, he never look back. He was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant in 1990 and Premio Internazionale of the Accademia Chigiana in Siena in 1992. N ovember 2003: Henry Doktorski appeared as guest accordionist with violinist Gil Shaham and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in two performances of Carlos Gardel's Por Una Cabeza arranged by John Williams. The concerts, on November 28 and 29, 2003 at the Heinz Center for the Performing Arts in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, were conducted by PSO music director Mariss Jansons. Composed in 1935 by the great French-born Argentinean tango composer, singer and actor, Carlos Gardel (1890-1935), Por Una Cabeza bemoans the composer's lack of fortune, both in wagering on horses and love. This sensuous tango was featured in Gardel's 1935 film, Tango Bar, released three months before his tragic and untimely death in a plane crash. Nearly a half-century later, Por Una Cabeza became famous by its performance in the 1992 Hollywood film, Scent of a Woman

A View from the Stands Grammy-nominated violinist plays at Royce Hall MUSIC: Though only 29, Shaham is already experienced performer of works from Beethoven to Bach By Barbara McGuire Daily Bruin Contributor Violinist Gil Shaham thinks luck is what kept him from playing on any street corners to pay rent. But his natural ability to manipulate a violin bow has just as much shaped what is a prestigious repertoire. But in making waves in the musical scene since age 10, Shaham has more than just luck he has a discipline which has enabled him to skip over this "stepping stone" in the life of a musician. Shaham compares his musical discipline, coupled with its prestige and difficulty, to the job of an actor. "I guess what we do is we're sort of like actors. We get a script and we try to bring it to life for an audience," Shaham said in a recent phone interview.

By Catherine Reese Newton
The Salt Lake Tribune
Gil Shaham is a Faure fanatic. Now the violinist is sharing his devotion with the world.
"Faure is one of the great, great masters of music," Shaham said. "Every piece is so beautiful. I've been playing the A Major Sonata for 15 years, at least; the last couple of years, I've been learning his other music, and it's just been incredible. It sort of feels like when I heard the music of Brahms for the first time."
After exploring the violin music of the French master (1845-1924), he said, "I thought it might be good to find out what the world thought."
Shaham was speaking from Charlottesville, Va., where he and his wife, violinist Adele Anthony, were celebrating the opening of Shaham's recital tour and the first birthday of their son, Gabriel. ("He just took his first steps last week," Shaham reported. "We're in such big trouble.")
The tour stops at the University of Utah's Libby Gardner Concert Hall on Wednesday, the day after Shaham's new Faure album is released. Shaham and his longtime recital partner, pianist Akira Eguchi, will perform Faure's A Major Sonata, Berceuse, "Morceau de lecture a vue" and two transcriptions from "Pelleas et Melisande," as well as Copland's G Major Sonata. The violinist also will play Bach's solo D Minor Partita.

This Michigan EMMY award-winning program profiles the remarkable young American-Israeli violinist, Gil Shaham, during the year surrounding his triumphant Carnegie Hall debut. Shaham is seen practicing in his small New York studio apartment, at one point while watching a baseball game, and playing for his legendary teacher, Dorothy DeLay. There is a particularly touching exchange between Shaham and his first teacher in Jerusalem, Samuel Bernstein, who was also the teacher of Shaham's father. Gil Shaham is seen on tour with conductor Hugh Wolff and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra performing at Symphony Hall in Boston and at the famed Aspen Music Festival performing with the legendary pianist, Brooks Smith. Scenes in Israel help give the viewer a sense of Gil's early llife. Of particular interest is film shot at a master class in Jerusalem when Shaham was ten years old. He is seen performing the Scherzo Tarantelle by Wieniawski at age 10 and then playing the same music in 1993 at age 21. His parents, both scientists, reflect on their son's early years in Jeruselem, and confess that neither particularly encouraged Gil to play violin. In fact, the future prodigy begged his parents to let him play the violin for three years before they finally agreed to lessons. Gil's sister, an accomplished pianist, is seen soothing her brother's skakey nerves before his Carnegie Hall debut. She gives him a Mickey Mouse watch as a good luck gift.

by Edith Eisler One person’s misfortune can be another’s lucky break. Everybody knows stories of understudies who became famous overnight when they stepped in for an indisposed star. This happens not only in the theater but on the concert stage as well. When violinist Itzhak Perlman could not travel to London in 1989 because of an ear infection, Gil Shaham, age 18, got his big chance taking over the Bruch and Sibelius Concertos with the London Symphony Orchestra. Tell me something about your background. My parents are both Israeli—in fact, my mother’s family claims to have been in Jerusalem for nine generations! I was born in 1971, in Urbana, Illinois, where my parents were doing post-doctoral studies at the university. We all went back to Israel before I was two years old, so I have dual citizenship and can go to, say, Cuba on my Israeli passport and Syria on my American passport. That covers a wide range of travel. I grew up in Jerusalem and came to this country when I was 11, and I’ve lived in New York ever since. Are your parents still in Israel?
