Now the violinist is sharing his devotion with the world. "Faure is one of the great, great masters of music," Shaham said. "Every piece is so beautiful. I've been playing the A Major Sonata for 15 years, at least; the last couple of years, I've been learning his other music, and it's just been incredible. It sort of feels like when I heard the music of Brahms for the first time." After exploring the violin music of the French master (1845-1924), he said, "I thought it might be good to find out what the world thought." Shaham was speaking from Charlottesville, Va., where he and his wife, violinist Adele Anthony, were celebrating the opening of Shaham's recital tour and the first birthday of their son, Gabriel. ("He just took his first steps last week," Shaham reported. "We're in such big trouble.") The tour stops at the University of Utah's Libby Gardner Concert Hall on Wednesday, the day after Shaham's new Faure album is released. Shaham and his longtime recital partner, pianist Akira Eguchi, will perform Faure's A Major Sonata, Berceuse, "Morceau de lecture a vue" and two transcriptions from "Pelleas et Melisande," as well as Copland's G Major Sonata. Tell me something about your background. My parents are both Israeli—in fact, my mother’s family claims to have been in Jerusalem for nine generations! I was born in 1971, in Urbana, Illinois, where my parents were doing post-doctoral studies at the university. We all went back to Israel before I was two years old, so I have dual citizenship and can go to, say, Cuba on my Israeli passport and Syria on my American passport. That covers a wide range of travel. I grew up in Jerusalem and came to this country when I was 11, and I’ve lived in New York ever since. Are your parents still in Israel?
