Rare and dazzling Stravinsky
Via Salzburg,
Glenn Gould Studio, October 23, 2003 In music, as in sports, all-star assemblages don't always play that well. Music, like sports, is a collective affair, generally, and no amount of individual brilliance can beat a solid team effort. However, on Thursday night, Mayumi Seiler of Via Salzburg manage to put together a group of brilliant first-rate players from the Toronto Symphony to concoct an absolutely dazzling performance of Stravinsky's L'histoire du soldat , in its original narrated version, with Derek Boyes providing the text. Written during the horrors of the First World War, L'histoire du soldat is one take on the ravages of war, essentially a series of Russian folktales about a pact with the devil, told in Stravinsky's quickly developing ironic musical language, where marches are out of step, harmonies slightly off-key, instruments rattling off one another in crazy combination. And each instrumentalist in Stravinsky's score has a part to play, and all performed with great gusto on Thursday night. Seiler herself turned in a fine performance on the violin, representing at times both the soldier and his Devilish tormentor. James Gardner's trumpet sounded just the right fake-martial note all night, with some tricky runs handled with ease. Joaquin Valdepenas's clarinet answered Marshall's trumpet with an eerie, hysterical wail that put one in mind of the diabolical.

Welcome to the inaugural season of Via Salzburg,
Why is it called "Via Salzburg"?

Besides being the birthplace of Mozart, a renowned cultural capital, and a city of beauty, Salzburg is the city that shaped my musical influences. Though I was born in Japan, I was steeped in the musical culture of Salzburg throughout my childhood and student years. So, like me, this series comes to Toronto via Salzburg. I hope you enjoy being part of this wonderful music.

Cynthia Steljes, Peter De Sotto, Joseph Macerollo, and George Meanwell of Quartetto Gelato MMMMMM -GELATO
Now, how many chamber ensembles can say their CDs have gone to outer space? Well, Quartetto Gelato can. Canadian astronaut Dr. Robert Thirsk brought one of their discs along on a space shuttle Columbia flight. This group of multi-
talented performers blend oboe, English horn, violin, accordion, cello, guitar, mandolin, and voice into a sound that has received much acclaim from coast to coast to coast. Quartetto Gelato is all over the universe in more ways than one: their repertoire includes Classical works, opera arias, tango, showpieces, and gypsy fiddling. They have toured North America, Sweden, and Southeast Asia, and last season the group made its Italian debut in Milan. In July, Quartetto Gelato can be heard in Cincinnati (Jul 3), at the Galway Festival (Jul 13), and in Ottawa (Jul 25). A few of their concerts during the upcoming season include Portland, OR (Sep 26); Clinton, NY (Oct 28); Pomona, NJ (Oct 31); Kansas City, MO (Dec 11); and Morrow, GA (Dec 18).

The festival also included a series of masterclasses, lectures, round-table discussions, pre-concert talks, and public readings of new works. The next Strings of the Future, in May 2001, is entitled

The mother of the modern musical comedy, operetta flourished during the latter half of the 19th century. This episode features excerpts from classic comic operas of the era by Jacques Offenbach, Johann Strauss Jr. and Gilbert and Sullivan. Special guest: Kimberly Barber, a renowned mezzo-soprano who has performed at major opera houses all over North America, Great Britain, Europe and the Far East.

Come Into the Parlour counts down the pop hits of the 19th century Release Date: December 4, 2003 Forget gangsta rap, nu-metal, goth rock and alt.country. VisionTV has something even more radical: the original pop sounds of the 1800s. On Sundays, starting Jan. 4 at 9:30 p.m. ET Come Into the Parlour , a time-traveling tour through the Victorian hit parade. The show repeats on Monday afternoons, starting Jan. 5, at 4:30 p.m. ET, and on Wednesday nights, starting Jan. 7, at 9:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. ET. Soprano Carolyn Sinclair and pianist Michael Jarvis What they played was an extraordinarily eclectic blend of genres that included classical, folk and sentimental songs, novelty music and operetta. With its broad appeal to people of many different backgrounds, parlour music was the precursor to 20th-century pop. Come Into the Parlour recreates the simple pleasures of that era: a cozy room warmed by a roaring fire, tea and sherry arrayed on the sideboard, and a group of friends raising their voices in song. The guests include Canadian luminaries of the concert and opera stage, such as lyric baritone Russell Braun, mezzo-soprano Kimberly Barber, tenor Eric Shaw and violinist Mayumi Seiler. Sinclair and Jarvis are also joined regularly in the parlour by their neighbours, mezzo-soprano Jo-Anne Bentley and baritone Peter Fisher.
