Aaron Rosand At that time my father gave me $1.00 a week as an allowance. So every Saturday I would buy two subway tokens for 15 cents apiece and go down to Greenwich Village where there were some out-of-print book and record stores. The remaining 70 cents was sometimes enough to acquire a used lp if I hadn't already spent 25 cents for a hot dog! It was there that my collection of Aaron Rosand performances on Vox records began. At the time I really didn't know how to differentiate between his playing and anyone else's. All I knew was that I liked it.

Among the world’s outstanding violinists is Aaron Rosand, whose great art has left audiences spellbound in the United States, Europe and other parts of the world. Acclaimed as one of the premier violinists of today, Aaron Rosand carries on the traditions of two distinguished schools of violin playing. Born in Indiana of a Russian mother and Polish father, Rosand studied with Leon Sametini, a disciple of Eugene Ysaye, and the famed Efrem Zimbalist, a student of the legendary Leopold Auer.
Rosand spent his formative years in Chicago, and gave his recital debut at the Chicago Opera House at the age of nine. The following year the young prodigy made his orchestral debut performing the Mendelssohn Concerto with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Frederick Stock. Since then Rosand has appeared with the major American and European orchestras under such distinguished conductors as Rostropovich, Reiner, Kondrashin, Steinberg, Leinsdorf, Bernstein, Skrowaczewski, Slatkin, Maazel and Blomstedt.
Rosand has recorded extensively throughout his career. In addition to the complete Beethoven and Bach sonatas, he has recorded numerous concertos, specialising in 19th-century Romantic masterpieces. His recordings of concertos as well as shorter works with orchestra by Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, Lalo, Saint-Saens, Chausson, Wieniawski, Rimsky-Korsakov, Sarasate and Ysaye have been critically acclaimed, and he made the premier recordings of concertos by Joachim, Hubay, Ernst, Arensky and Godard, as well as the complete Humoresques by Sibelius. A seasoned performer, Ms. Ruhstrat made her professional debut at the age of twelve with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Lukas Foss. Numerous engagements followed including appearances with the Denver Symphony, Denver Chamber Orchestra, Debut Orchestra of Los Angeles, Oregon Symphony, Chicago Civic Symphony, Concertante of Chicago, Carmel Symphony, Utah Chamber Orchestra, Concerto Soloists of Philadelphia, Concord Chamber Orchestra, National Repertory Orchestra and most recently with the Orquesta Sinfonica de Aguascalientes in Mexico. German audiences have heard Ms. Ruhstrat in Hamburg, Gattingen, Baden-Baden and Stuttgart, where she toured with the Philharmonia Da Camera Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Michael Holtzel, and in Berlin where she was featured on a live radio broadcast performing Sibelius’s Violin Concerto with the Berlin Radio Symphony under the direction of Rico accani. This renowned virtuoso, who trained at the Juilliard School of Music and made his New York debut at the age of 14, also studied and recorded with the great Jascha Heifetz. Mr. Friedman was a soloist with many of the world's major orchestras, and recorded for RCA with the Boston, Chicago and London Symphony Orchestras. He led the Garrett Lakes Summer Festival Orchestra in Maryland for more than a decade. After an injury to his left arm and hand, he became a professor of violin and chamber music at Yale University, where he taught until his death.
