    An Interview with Aaron Rosand
Acclaimed for his signature tone and impeccable musicianship, American violinist Aaron Rosand is one of the last standardbearers of the school of romantic virtuosity. Besides performing the traditional repertoire, he made the premier recordings of concertos by Joachim, Hubay, Ernst, Arensky, and Godard. He has recorded extensively for the Vox, Audiofon, Biddulph, and Harmonia Mundi record labels. Professor of Violin at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, the peripatetic Rosand makes his home in London. Sullivan : Tell me about Curtis Institute in the 1940's. Who were your classmates? What was the atmosphere? Rosand : The names are names that I'm sure you know. Most of them are now filling the first chair positions of major orchestras in this country and the world. When I think of concertmasters, Norman Carroll of the Philadelphia Orchestra, was one. He's retiring this year. Joseph Silverstein, the Boston Symphony. Thirty yearsa marvelous violinist. Daniel Majewski, died a year or two ago, very sad; he was concertmaster of the Cleveland Orchestra. There was a fellow Whippler who was concertmaster of the Denver Symphony for many years. Amongst the pianists, there was Gary Graffman, Seymour Lipkin, Silvia Zaremba, my first wife Eileen Flissler, Jacob Lateiner.... Sullivan : I enjoyed his "Waldstein" sonata as a kid.

Berlioz's Reverie supports the violin part with characteristically transparent orchestral textures. Although the solo writing recalls the viola of Harold in Italy, the composer allows just a bit more virtuosic display. If he had written the first movement of Harold in Italy in a similar vein, Paganini might not have rejected it out of hand. Rosand provides enough color to balance the accompaniment. The recordings are uniformly clear and rich in detailtruly amazing for their vintage. At Vox's prices, a collection like this one by an estimable violinist like Rosand is well-nigh irresistible. Think of it this way: for almost nothing, you can get one of the best Lalos ever recorded and about an hour and a half of music absolutely free. A phenomenal bargain! Aaron Rosand Internationally acclaimed as one of the master violinists of our time, Aaron Rosand is renowned as an artist of unique personal style. The late Pablo Casals spoke of Mr. Rosand as the extraordinary violinist "with a powerful, expressive manner of playing, reminiscent of his old friend, Eugene Ysaye." In the grand tradition of virtuosity, he is noted for his interpretations of the 19th century repertoire. American born of Russian mother and Polish father, Aaron Rosand made his debut at the age of ten with the Chicago Symphony under the baton of Frederick Stock. Since then, he has collaborated with such eminent conductors as Leonard Bernstein, William Steinberg, Erich Leinsdorf, Fritz Reiner, Mstislav Rostropovich, Klaus Tennstedt, and Kyril Kondrashin, and has performed with the major orchestras of the world. Aaron Rosand is Professor at The Curtis Institute of Music, continuing the tradition of his late professor, Efrem Zimbalist. He is also guest professor at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and at the L'Academie d'Ete in Nice in the summers. To learn more about Aaron Rosand, please visit

" one of the very best violinists currently active, probably even the best in Romantic repertoire. Here, he ventures into somewhat later styles yet sounds completely at ease. Throughout, but especially in the opening and that cadenza, Rosand's singing tone and flawless intonation serve him well, and his ardent phrasing serves to emphasize the Romantic roots of Sibelius' somewhat chillier style. In fact, this is a wonderfully warm reading, yet not out of character, with every phrase perfectly weighted. " Click here for complete review.

I am dedicating this album of Polish composers to my beloved father, who was

Recording the Szymanowski works has special significance as these pieces
were written for Paul Kochanski, the previous owner of my violin a
Guarnerius Del Gesu, that is still known as the "Ex-Kochanski". Karol
Szymanowski, Paul Kochanski and the incomparable pianist, Artur Rubinstein,
were very close friends. This may account for the extraordinary difficulty of the piano scores. It seems only fitting to record these works for the violin for which they were conceived. The Chopin Nocturnes adapt so beautifully to the violin. The expressive use of the vibrato and portamento enhance the lyric line. In this recording, I have included two rarely heard

4 Nocturnes, Wieniawski: Capriccio-Valse; Saltarelle; Souvenir de Moscou. Aaron Rosand , violin. Hugh Sung , Piano. Artek 11 73 Minutes            This is a beautifully played, well-conceived recital of Polish music that Rosand dedicates to his father, who was born in Lowicz, Poland at the turn of the last century. His father started him on the vioin and sacrificed during the Great Depression to pay for violin lessons for his son.            Rosand plays each piece as to the manner born. The Szymanowski miniatures are fevered and ethereal, the Chopin Nocturnes ardent, and the Wieniawski bonbons playful. Rosand still has the technique to pull off this program, but he doesn't aim for flash anymore, preferring to play each work as a character study rather than as an opportunity for showing off. An interesting note for violin aficionados: Rosand plays the same Guarnerius del Gesu violin that was played by Paul Kochanski, the violinist who worked with Szymanowski to arrange and compose his music for violin.
