'In the past 20 years the making of violins has taken an enormous leap forward. Today there is an important group of violin makers whose instruments offer a real alternative for those of the great masters of the classical period.
Thomas Meuwissen is in my opinion a valuable representative of this generation. He posses a great knowledge and empathic power, artistic craftsmanship and a confident instinct for the material.
While playing his cellos I was convinced of the happy matching of power, elegance and playability as well as the beauty of the sound.
I recommend all my colleagues who are interested in new instruments, to get in touch with this remarkable violin maker.' Valentin Erben, cellist
Alban Berg Quartett
'I have known this wonderful Belgian violinmaker Thomas Meuwissen for several years, ever since my chamber music partner prof. Walter Nothas has played on an excellent Meuwissen cello. Later on I have seen and tried several of his violins, which were made with real mastery and have a full, nice, round sound. Now, besides playing on my old Italian violin, I am also playing often on my wonderful Meuwissen violin which has a beautiful, flexible sound, a deep G-string and a brilliant E-string.
Recently I have playing several orchestra concerts and recitals on this violin at Budapest Festival and in Switzerland, where my colleagues and audience highly appreciated the instrument.'

WORLD SERVICE
BBC World Service marks its HIV/Aids Season with a special concert of music, poetry and drama A star-studded line-up of musicians and writers join the internationally renowned actor Sir Ian McKellen for the BBC World Service HIV/Aids Concert broadcast to a global radio audience this Saturday, 22 November. The concert, hosted by Sir Ian McKellen, is from the Mermaid Theatre in London. Sir Ian McKellen is joined on stage by the African broadcaster Ofeibea Quist-Arcton who interviews the artists and uncovers some revealing insights into their personal views of HIV/Aids. She says she talks to teenagers regularly about HIV/Aids and is told by many that girls who carry protection are often stigmatised as bad girls with many boyfriends. "I tell them it is better being a bad girl who is changing boyfriends than have Aids," she says.

ETERNAL IMAGES IN MODERN DRAMATURGY
a talk with poet and playwright Victor Korkia
Whether a theatre is prospering or going through a crisis, critics never stop urging directors to put on more contemporary plays. The latter agree... and yet, most of them prefer staging classics. Nevertheless, quite a number of dramatists rose to prominence in the past decade - Nadezhda Ptushkina, Maxim Kurochkin, Yelena Isayeva and others. One of them is the poet and playwright Victor Korkia. Victor started writing poems in 1969 and in the 80s he ranked among the top five poets of Moscow. But is was not until 1988 at the peak of Gorbachev's "perestroika" that his first collection of poems and his first play "I Am A Poor Soso Jugashvili", with Joseph Stalin (whose father's name was Jugashvili) as the principal character, came out in print. The parallels drawn by the author, the slightly altered monologues of Czar Boris Godunov from Alexander Pushkin's drama, inserted into the text, induced thoughts about the nature of power in Russia, ways of achieving and maintaining it. "We, post-modernists, are very fond of quotations: we use them as metaphors", Victor Korkia explains. "All we hear around us enters our vocabulary. In fact, there isn't any poetic trick or poetic image that can't be found in Homer".

CLASSICAL MUSIC Sweeping Gestures
BY Rick Walters I'm not sure how tall the young Russian violinist Vadim Repin really is, but on stage with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra last weekend he seemed NBA-sized. I'll remember this concert for the dramatic impact of his sweeping arm gestures and his statuesque figure swaying around with the music. The 27-year-old Repin is a hot, rising star of classical music. He played Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 1, not the most likely piece for a young virtuoso. It's more elegant than showy, more an ensemble piece than a soloist's moment to shine alone. Somehow, that added to the pleasure. Repin was like a thoroughbred at a trot. His restraint was appropriate to this concerto. However, after a prolonged ovation, he couldn't resist a full-speed gallop in an unplanned encore. He briefly coached some surprised MSO players to improvise (!) a two-chord accompaniment and jumped into some amazing variations that used every bowing technique ever invented for the instrument. Repin wasn't the only thing worth remembering about this concert. William Eddins, associate conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, made a whopping MSO debut as guest conductor. Most conductors simply don't have anything close to his emotional confidence and freedom.

Friday, April 4, 2003 CSO soars in superb Boston music hall Concert review
By Janelle Gelfand
The Cincinnati Enquirer
BOSTON
- On day four of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra's first tour with music director Paavo Jarvi, the usually reserved Boston audience responded with cheers, bravos and two standing ovations. Wednesday was another cold, rainy night on the East Coast, but more than 2,200 came out to hear the CSO play for the first time in Symphony Hall since Max Rudolf brought his orchestra here twice in the '60s. Playing its tour program of Erkki-Sven Tuur, Sibelius and Shostakovich in the stunning acoustics of Symphony Hall, the CSO could compete with any orchestra in the world. Carnegie Hall may have warmth, but the 2,600-seat Symphony Hall, which resembles Vienna's Musikverein, has spectacular clarity and brightness. Add the tremendous precision and musicality of the CSO under Jarvi, and it was an unbeatable combination. Despite a grueling day, the musicians played their hearts out. After performing as the Cincinnati Pops on Tuesday in Carnegie Hall, they spent more than five hours on a bus Wednesday, to arrive in time to play in Boston.
