The International Festival of Music Lucerne was created in 1938, the year Hitler marched into Austria. Due to the political circumstances, Switzerland became, for a few years, a safe-haven for a lot of artists who could or would not perform anymore in Germany or Austria. The Concert de Gala of the year 1938 was directed by Arturo Toscanini. He performed Wagner's Siegfried-Idyl which the composer had written in his house in Lucerne. In its more than 60 years of existence, the Internationale Musikfestwochen Luzern , as the festival is called in German has become one of the leading events of classical music in the world. For its year 2000 edition, the organizers have published substantial programs, including a book of 460 pages with essays on the festival's guiding theme, metamorphosis, and on other subjects such as the anniversary of Johann Sebastian Bach and the composer's in residence, György Kurtág and Toshio Hosokawa, to whom another, 301-page book, is dedicated. The salle blanche , conceived for 1840 people by the acoustics specialist Russell Johnson and the French architect Jean Nouvel, who first wanted it blue and red, but changed his original plans after criticism by conductors against too much color, was inaugurated in August 1998. The acoustic are excellent thanks to the traditional shoe box hall-form with its its 1:1 relation of height to width. The insulation of the hall from outside noise is perfect. Not only for these reasons, the festival can live up to its ambitions and the prestige of its famous performing guests. By the way, the audience was excellent too. No cell phone ringing! What a pleasant contrast to Zurich's Tonhalle. The following article renders the impressions of three symphony concerts of this year's edition.

Vadim Repin After winning the most prestigious and demanding violin competition in the world, the Reine Elisabeth Concours, at the age of seventeen, Vadim Repin, now twenty-seven, is recognized as the foremost young violinist to have emerged from Russia since the days of Heifetz, Milstein and David Oistrakh.
Born in Novosibirsk, where he studied with Professor Zakhar Bron, Repin was only eleven when he won first prize in the Wieniawski International Competition. His first performance with orchestra was at the age of seven; at eleven he gave a recital in St. Petersburg.
His international solo career spans performances with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, the Orchestra de la Suisse Romande, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Cleveland Symphony, the Royal Philharmonic and Hall Orchestras. He has also appeared with the Orchestra de Paris, Sddeutscher Rundfunk, the NHK of Japan, the Kirov Orchestra and the Berlin Sinfonieorchester. sezona 2000/2001 Koncerte sta sofinancirala Ministrstvo za kulturo Republike Slovenije in Mestna obèina Maribor OD DVESTO DO DVA TISOÈ Le nekaj let je od tega, ko smo na koncertih Mariborske filharmonije v Unionski dvorani našteli dvesto obiskovalcev. Zato smo lahko toliko bolj ponosni, ker smo jih o božiènem koncertu pretekle sezone našteli kar dva tisoè! Številka, o kateri so ob ustanovitvi Mariborske filharmonije upali sanjati le najveèji zanesenjaki!
Izvedli bomo nekaj novitet domaèih in tujih skladateljev: Quintetto concertante F. Hidasa, v izvedbi stalnega gosta našega ciklusa – simfoniènega orkestra Slovenske filharmonije – boste slišali 2. simfonijo J. Matièièa. Mariborski filharmoniki bomo izvedli še Simfonijo domaèega, mariborskega skladatelja M. Feguša, ob tem pa bo na koncertnih sporedih domaèe in gostujoèe filharmonije tudi izbor najpriljubljenejših skladb svetovnega glasbenega repertoarja. Dvorakov Koncert za violonèelo, Mendelssohnov violinski koncert, Koncert za klavir št. 27 W. A. Mozarta, Brahmsova Prva simfonija, Simfonija št. 2 S. Rahmaninova, baletna suita Romeo in Julija S. Prokofjeva in istoimenska uvertura P. I. Èajkovskega – to so le nekateri izmed biserov, ki sijejo v glasbeni ogrlici sezone 2000/2001.

T he astounding ease of the performance by the Belgian violinist Yossif Ivanov, the youngest competitor in the semifinals of the Jeunesses Musicales Montreal International Competition, awed the throng of listeners. The only contestant who dared to play the imposed piece ( Chant , by Ana Sokolovic) without the score, he dug into the pyrotechnics of Ysaye's Sonate no 6 without flinching and demonstrated unerring bowing technique in his Bach and Prokofiev. In the finals, his Sibelius Concerto brought a devoted public to their feet and earned rapturous applause, even charming several violinists from the accompanying Montreal Symphony Orchestra.Yet when jury president André Bourbeau announced the winner of the First Grand Prize (to which the generous sum of $25,000 was attached), Yossif Ivanov seemed surprised. The 16-year-old barely had time to savour his dream before it became a reality. "It was fabulous, absolutely amazing! I never thought I would win!" he blurted out two days later. "Of course, you always hope," he continued in a slightly halting and timid voice, "but so many factors must be considered in the awarding of prizes." In an interview with Eric Friesen on CBC RadioTwo several minutes after that announcement, his enthusiasm was dampened by anxiety over his final exam. A whole new repertoire still needs polishing, the director of the school is "very strict," and will not accept less than perfection.

In hands of violinist Repin, 'Ruby' shimmers with CSO
By Mary Ellyn Hutton, Post music writer Vadim Repin, where have you been? Sharing your artistry elsewhere, obviously. But Cincinnati finally got in on the riches, as this stunning young violinist bowed in with Jesus Lopez-Cobos and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra Friday morning at Music Hall. In one of the finest performance of anything this reviewer has ever heard the Russian-born Repin, 27, thrilled a small matinee audience with Edouard Lalo's ''Symphonie Espagnole.'' Word of mouth alone should ensure a larger house next time. And it won't be long. The concert repeats at 8 tonight at Music Hall. Also on the program were Haydn's Symphony No. 104 and a choice rarity, Richard Wagner's youthful Symphony in C Major. Adding a touch of history and a fabulous sonic dimension to Repin's debut was his violin, the 1708 ''Ruby'' Stradivarius, on loan from the Stradivarius Society of Chicago. Spanish virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate premiered the ''Symphonie Espagnole'' on the same violin in 1875. Chances are, if Ruby could talk, she would rave about Repin. She certainly sang for him. What else could she do? From Repin's first touch, she surrendered to his energy and passion. Lalo's five-movement concerto provided generous scope for Repin's virtuosity. There were awesome technical displays - the finale alone deserved one big exclamation point - and moments of ravishing tonal beauty. The Andante was heart-wrenching, a dramatic evocation of Iberian soul (French-born Lalo was part Spanish), while he negotiated the fleet-footed Scherzando with pinpoint precision. Noteworthy throughout was Lopez-Cobos' sensitive accompaniment. There was true dialogue between Repin and the CSO - the woodwind embellishments in the opening Allegro, the tricky cross-rhythms of the Intermezzo which ended with a deft, delightful ''stinger.''
