Jean SIBELIUS

Violin Concerto in D minor, op.47
Sergei PROKOFIEV
Symphony No.5 in B-flat major, op.100 Vadim REPIN violin
SHUI Lan conductor OVERALL NOISE RATING: 3 (Kids talking at the beginning of the concerto; coughing and more coughing. ) The Noise Rating Index is a partially-objective measurement of pager and handphone blasts, 9pm and 10pm watch beeps, coughing-during-the-pianissimo-bits, intra-audience conversation and other mind-bogglingly inept noises emitted in the concert hall during actual performance of music. It is measured on a scale of to 5, in increasing annoyance. This review has been kindly sponsored by the Singapore Symphonia Co. Ltd Last Concert Reviewed Next Week's Concert by Jason Tan and the Inkpot Sibelius Nutcase tm Jason Tan reports on the Saturday Concerto performance: There's no doubt that many, if not all, came for the concert to hear the "greatest living violinist", Vadim Repin. I'm not fully certain of the validity of that title, but Repin certainly didn't disappoint my high expectations. Together with his absolutely fantastic Ruby Strad, Repin weaved a realm of Finnish mystical fantasy, full of vitality and sonority. The wonderful timbre of the violin is full of rich glorious brightness, but never thin, metallic or superficial. Repin's vivid personalized account of this popular work was not only an exhilarating ride, but also had a beautiful conviction that left me enraptured. He has shown remarkable versatility and mastery of his instrument, transcending pure virtuostic perfection to play this concerto most convincingly. What impressed me the most was that inner calmness that manifested even when he attacked the most difficult of passages with pin-point accuracy.

Violinists' Discographies on the Web
The
following web sites all have pages listing details of the recordings of the artist to which the link refers. Many researchers will find these lists invaluable. Alas, no two discographies are alike. Many discographers compile lists of only the recordings and the catalogue numbers. But some also list recording dates and a very few include matrix numbers. The occasional list will supply recording details including location information. Very few follow the conventions for writing discographies, but never the less provide the required information. We may never achieve uniformity on these pages, but so long as they are available, the information will be available for future use. Violin Land would like to thank every hard-working and diligent discographer, for, without them it would be a sadder world. A B C D ... Z A

2 Lawrence Budmen GYPSY FIRE The rich, dark sound of Gluzman's violin (a 1609 Stradivarius once owned by the legendary Russian violinist and teacher Leopold Auer) conjured up the world of Tchaikovsky and the Russian violinistic tradition. Gluzman is the contemporary embodiment of that great Russian school of violin virtuosos that runs from Misha Elman and Jascha Heifetz through Gluzman's contemporaries Maxim Vengerov and Vadim Repin. His blistering performance of Ravel's showpiece received a standing, cheering ovation. And what a performance! (While Tzigane is a Frenchman's impression of Gypsy fiddlers, it remains the work of a master craftsman. Mastery was what Gluzman's rendition was all about.) Gluzman's technique is a given his virtuosity is awesome! His violin ignited a Gypsy flame beneath the music. Gluzman did not give a dutiful performance of the notes. His Tzigane glowed with the inner fire of creative inspiration. Violinist and music became one a transcendent artistic moment! (As an encore, Gluzman offered Fritz Kreisler's more refined Viennese version of Gypsy music La Gitana . Gluzman played this bon-bon with flair and style. Sentiment without bathos exactly the way Kreisler himself played this music.)

Ragin (RAH-gheen) Wenk-Wolff enjoys an extraordinary career. She began playing the violin at age 11, and started studies with her first professional teacher at age 13. Only one year later, at the age of 14, she performed Mozart's G Major Violin Concerto with her own cadenzas, and since then she has regularly been a soloist with all the Norwegian symphony orchestras, including the Oslo Philharmonic, the Bergen Symphony Orchestra, and the Norwegian Broadcast Orchestra. She received much acclaim for her performance with orchestra of the Vieuxtemps "Ballade & Polonaise" which was broadcast on Norwegian Television and BBC Radio 3 in England. Her remarkable playing and mature and moving interpretation of works such as Mozart's haunting Sinfonia Concertante instantly brought her to the forefront among Norwegian artists. At 17, she made her official debut in Oslo, which caused a sensation, and for which she won the Norwegian Debut Prize. In October 1984 she had her very successful London debut at the Purcell Room (South Bank) and the same month gave a recital in Paris in conjunction with an exhibition of her own drawings.

Violinist Vadim Repin (born Novosibirsk, 1971) follows Maxim Vengerov (born Novosibirsk, 1974) into the Western musical arena with an outstanding coupling of a Prokofiev concerto with Shostakovich's First. (Vengerov's disc, replacing Prokofiev's Second with his First, features him with the LSO under Rostropovich [Teldec 4509-98143-2].) As with Vengerov, Repin knows what he thinks about these scores and his way with the Prokofiev is fascinating. This work owes its popularity to the aria-like theme of its Andante Le pas d'acier eight years earlier). If this is so, the change, for the restatement, to romantically sustained string chords becomes a further step in Prokofiev's "argument" with the forces of musical reductionism in 1930s Russia. Once one starts to listen to the concerto in this way, its enigmatic restlessness becomes less arbitrary. The shadowy, evasive opening movement takes on the tone of the darker episodes in the narrative drama the composer was writing at the same time:

Photo by Thierry Cohen. Vadim Repin Citizen of the World by Edith Eisler Though he started winning major competitions when he was only 11, Repin’s international reputation was established when he won the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels at the age of 17. His career has flourished ever since, taking him all over the world to perform recitals, chamber music, and concertos with leading orchestras and conductors. His repertoire ranges from Classical to contemporary and he has a large, award-winning discography to his credit. Repin has visited New York many times as soloist with various American and European orchestras. From the first time I heard him, it was clear to me that he was an extraordinary player, and that impression has been confirmed and reinforced by each subsequent appearance as well as by his recordings. He has a spectacular technique, remarkable in its apparently limitless facility and infallible security, and a virtuoso’s natural flair without a virtuoso’s mannerisms or exaggerations. His tone is radiantly beautiful, warm, variable, and powerful, and unbroken by instrumental limitations such as changes of bow, string, or position. However, what is most captivating about his playing is his innate feeling for the music, his unerring sense of style, and his irresistible charm. His formidable technical resources are entirely at the service of the composer and he combines respect for the score with a strongly felt personal response to the music, from inward expressiveness to fiery, passionate abandon. At his most recent New York appearance with the St. Louis Orchestra under Hans Vonk in October, he seemed to have reached a new peak both violinistically and communicatively. His performance of Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1, with which he has long been closely associated, was riveting in its almost reckless technical brilliance and its intense emotional concentration.
