Itzhak Perlman fiddles for his roots
By Daniel Benaim Itzhak Perlman, one of the most accomplished classical violinists of his generation, will appear at Woolsey Hall on Thurs., Sept. 24. Recently, Perlman has turned his attention to klezmer music, a traditional form of Yiddish folk and dance music currently enjoying a renaissance, thanks in part to Perlman's work. Four world-class klezmer ensembles will join Perlman on Thursday. The Herald spoke with him on Monday about klezmer music, reaching the popular audience, current musical trends, and possible fisticuffs with cellist Yo-Yo Ma. COURTESY NEW HAVEN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Perlman is at the center of the renaissance in klezmer, the music he heard as a child in Israel. The Yale Herald: Mr. Perlman, we're honored to have you playing here. Can you talk about your relationship with Yale? Itzhak Perlman: Well, I've got an honorary doctorate, so I think I'm a doctor of arts, so that means if anybody has a problem with arts, they can come to me and I'll fix it. I don't know. I've played many times in New Haven, but that's not Yale. YH: When did you get involved with klezmer? Was it a radical change for you?

Itzhak Perlman returns to Miller Auditorium
May 3, 2004 KALAMAZOO Internationally acclaimed violinist Itzhak Perlman returns to Miller Auditorium at Western Michigan University for the first time since 1997 for a single performance Wednesday, May 12, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Perlman is the undeniable reigning virtuoso of the violin and enjoys superstar status rarely afforded classical musicians. Beloved for his charm and humanity as well as his talent, he is recognized by audiences all over the world who respond not only to his flawless technique, but also to the irrepressible joy of making the music he communicates. Born in Israel in 1945, Perlman completed his initial training at the Academy of Music in Tel Aviv. Upon his arrival in New York, he was propelled into the international arena with an appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in 1958. Following studies at the Julliard School, Perlman won the prestigious Leventritt Competition in 1964 leading to an escalating worldwide career that now includes appearances with every major orchestra and in recitals and festivals across the globe. Perlman has won four Emmy Awards and fifteen Grammy Awards. One of his proudest achievements was his collaboration with film score composer John Williams in the Academy Award winning film "Schindler's List," in which he performed the violin solos. Harvard, Yale, Brandeis, and Roosevelt universities are among the institutions that have awarded him honorary degrees. President Ronald Reagan honored Perlman with a "Medal of Liberty" in 1986 and President Bill Clinton awarded him the "National Medal of Arts" in 2000.

VIOLINIST ITZHAK PERLMAN AND DAUGHTER, NAVAH, TO PERFORM AT MAY 10 TH
Dedicated to raising funding for research and treatment of arthritis, world renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman and his daughter, Navah, an accomplished concert pianist, will perform on Wednesday, May 10 th at the Shubert Theatre to benefit the new Itzhak Perlman Family Arthritis Treatment Center at Tufts-New England Medical Center. Mr. Perlman and Dr. Steere met while they were both studying the violin at the Juilliard School in New York. Their paths diverged. While Dr. Steere began a career in medicine, which led to groundbreaking work in identifying and treating Lyme disease, his Juilliard friend went on to become the premier violinist of his generation, as well as an eloquent spokesman on behalf of those with disabilities. "The Perlman family is committed to making the Perlman Center the preeminent arthritis treatment and research center in the nation," said Malcolm L. Sherman, Chairman of the NEMC Board of Trustees. "With this concert we are on our way." Sponsorship or tickets for the May 10 th concert at the Shubert Theatre are available by calling Conventures at 617-439-7700.

On Nov. 18, 1995, Itzhak Perlman, the violinist, came on stage to give a
concert at Lincoln Center in New York City. If you have ever been to a
Perlman concert, you know that getting on stage is no small achievement
for him. He was stricken with polio as a child, and has braces on both legs
and walks with the aid of two crutches.
To see him walk across the stage one step at a time, painfully and
slowly, is a sight. He walks painfully, yet majestically, until he
reaches his chair. Then he sits down, slowly, puts his crutches on the
floor, undoes the clasps on his legs, tucks one foot back and extends the other foot forward. Then he bends down and picks up the violin, puts it under his chin, nods to the conductor and proceeds to play. By now, the audience is used to this ritual. They sit quietly while he makes his way across the stage to his chair. They remain reverently silent

Subject: for Classical Accordion Lovers
To: squeezebox@cs.cmu.edu Dear Friends, Today I played for two recording sessions with the PSO. This was my first recording session with the symphony, and I thought I would share my experiences with you, as I have in the past. Many readers might enjoy reading these pastimes, which were learning experiences for me. I chose my smaller Sonola Rivoli piano accordion instead of my 32 pound free-bass Victoria simply because it was lighter and I didn't need the big instrument for the music I was called to perform. Why use a bulldozer when a shovel will do? Robert Croan, music writer for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette wrote in today's paper, "Conductor John Williams and violinist Itzhak Perlman slipped into town yesterday for the first of four closed recording sessions with the Pittsburgh Symphony in Heinz Hall. The CD, to be released by Sony Classical, will feature these artists with the Pittsburgh Symphony performing film music from the past 40 years. It's an example of the "crossover" repertory that is said to sell better than pure classical or pure pops in the contemporary market. . . .

"My being disabled with polio basically did not do anything to make my career better or worse. What it did cause was challenges in the very beginning."

Kennedy Center Honorees (Photo: AP)
(CBS) One of the most famous fiddlers in the world was acknowledged for his achievements at this year's Kennedy Center Honors. The Early Show 's co-anchor Julie Chen sat down with Itzhak Perlman, who was honored for his lifetime endeavor. Like many artists of note, Perlman's talent sparkled from the beginning. At the age of 3, the little Israeli boy fell in love with a sound he heard on the radio. His parents gave him a violin, and within a few years, he was performing around the world. Perlman performed on the "Ed Sullivan Show" when he was 13 years old. "I was on the 'Ed Sullivan Show' and I played nicely," he says. "I did not sound like an incredible 25-year-old artist … I wasn't ready. I was just talented." But, as he matured, Perlman's talent evolved into what can only be called magic.
