If you have ever been to a Perlman concert, you know that getting on stage is no small achievement for him. He was stricken with polio as a child, and so he has braces on both legs and walks with the aid of two crutches. To see him walk across the stage one step at a time, painfully and slowly, is an unforgettable sight. He walks painfully, yet majestically, until he reaches his chair. Then he sits down, slowly, puts his crutches on the floor, undoes the clasps on his legs, tucks one foot back and extends the other foot forward. Then he bends down and picks up the violin, puts it under his chin, nods to the conductor and proceeds to play. By now, the audience is used to this ritual. They sit quietly while he makes his way across the stage to his chair. They remain reverently silent while he undoes the clasps on his legs. They wait until he is ready to play. But this time, something went wrong. Just as he finished the first few bars, one of the strings on his violin broke. You could hear it snap it went off like gunfire across the room. There was no mistaking what that sound meant. There was no mistaking what he had to do. People who were there that night thought to themselves, "He'll have to get up, put on the clasps again, pick up the crutches and limp his way off stage to either find another violin or else find another string for this one."

Would I like to go? Woohoo! I sit amongst about twenty music students scattered among the orchestra level seats in Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. Most of them are half my age. (After a while you become inured to the embarrassment.) We wait in hushed awe. Perlman makes his way onto the stage from the wings with his metal crutches (I believe his disability is due to childhood polio) to vigorous applause from the orchestra and the rehearsal audience. A gentleman carries his Stradivarius for him until he is settled in a wide black metal chair. With his trademark good humor and a quip (I couldn't hear all that well but I think he joked about taking a tempo that was not humanly possible) he was ready for a brief rehearsal of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto. Itzhak Perlman is a marvel to watch and, of course, a treat for the ears. When you see his hands (on tv), it's hard to believe that those thick fingers can move so quickly and with such precision. Instead of holding his instrument under his chin at a 45 degree angle from his chest as most players do, it sits almost on top of his left shoulder and nearly extends the line segment that the two shoulders form, but his head faces forward looking down.

"Perlman was brought to Miller by the former executive director Bill Biddle, who was doing most all of the bookings for the seasons," said Bethany Gauthier, assistant marketing director for Miller Auditorium. "A lot of time goes into bringing large names such as Perlman to Miller." Perlman, who was scheduled to perform Oct. 1, 2003, had to reschedule his performance because of a death in his family, according to Gauthier. Ticket holders for that date will be able to use their tickets for the 7:30 p.m. performance. Franklin Bunn, M.D. Itzhak Perlman is widely regarded as the reigning virtuoso of the violin. Like cellist Yo-Yo Ma, he enjoys superstar status akin to that accorded to sports figures such as Tiger Woods and Magic Johnson. His primacy in music has been duly recognized. He has been honored with four Emmy Awards and has received honorary degrees from Harvard, Yale, Brandeis, Roosevelt, Yeshiva and Hebrew Universities. In 1986, President Reagan honored Perlman with a Medal of Liberty and in December 2000, President Clinton awarded him the National Medal of Arts. Perlman was born in Israel in 1945. The Louisville Orchestra, an ensemble in artistic transition, will depend on a series of guest conductors for its core classical subscription series in 2004-05. The orchestra is preparing to launch a search for a successor to music director Uriel Segal, whose tenure ends when his contract expires this summer. The fall season will begin Sept. 11 with the traditional Fanfara gala at the Kentucky Center's Whitney Hall. The program will be conducted by Steven Mercurio, probably best known for collaborating with such singers as Andrea Bocelli and Placido Domingo, and for his series of Christmas concerts with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. For his Fanfara program, Mercurio will be joined by bluegrass/classical crossover violinist Mark O'Connor in a performance of O'Connor's "Call of the Mockingbird." The concert will also include Barner's "Adagio for Strings," Copland's "A Lincoln Portrait" and John Alden Carpenter's 1924 jazz-infused "Skyscrapers."
