Itzhak Perlman Explores His Klezmer Soul Concert review: Itzhak Perlman and four klezmer bands at Tanglewood by Shel Horowitz Tanglewoodthe Berkshire summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestrawas never like this before! Normally the province of tuxedo-clad classical musicians playing orchestral favorites, this night saw classically trained performers wearing casual clothingeven some tie-dyed t-shirts ... an array of drums and amplifiers on stage ... audience members clapping out the complex rhythms ... and lots of dancing in the aisles of the Shed. The featured performer was violinist Itzhak Perlmanno stranger to Tanglewood and other great classical stagesbut the music was not classical, but klezmer. Klezmer, the folk music of Eastern European Jews, is a lively and varied music. Like so much of Jewish culture, klezmer lives and breathes and changesconstantly drawing from its surroundings. From minor-key dirges influenced by Jewish liturgy and Arab folk traditions, to hard-driving dance music backed by roaring clarinets and trumpets, to lightning-fast Hungarian Gypsy fiddle tunes, klezmer has absorbed the traditions around it in every country where the Jews of Eastern Europe settledincluding the United Sates, where klezmer has sometimes been called "Jewish jazz." Note to Yiddish speakers: I did the best I could with the spellings. Please forgive any errors. It was in the U.S. that klezmer was rediscovered in the 1960s and '70s, the spirit of the old wandering musicians breathing new life into the music as ensembles of young musicians began to explore an almost-lost tradition.

ITZHAK PERLMAN Works by Beethoven, Webern, Stravinsky, Bloch, and Gershwin. Sunday, April 9, Symphony Hall. By DAVID STERN ITZHAK PERLMAN IS PROBABLY THE most renowned violinist playing today, and Sunday's performance at Symphony Hall once again made clear why. His performance was consistently nothing short of amazing. Perlman is the quintessential Beethoven violinist; when he played the first violin sonata, it was if he were playing his own work. Next came Webern's Four Pieces for Violin and Piano , an early 12-tone work. It is strange, mystifying music, but the performances made it quite enticing. After the piece, Perlman charmingly stated, "Due to the short duration of these pieces, it is a tradition to repeat them," at which point the performers did. Stravinsky's Divertimento was a complete delight. With Perlman's synergetic performance, parts of the piece were as powerful as a symphonic performance of Rite of Spring

Violinist
"That he has accomplished so much with a crippling disability is a source of
amazement and admiration for all who come in contact with this remarkable man."
One of the greatest violinists of our era, Itzhak Perlman was born in Tel Aviv, Israel in 1945. The son of a barber, he took to the violin at an early age, receiving his first lessons at the Music Academy of Tel Aviv. A prodigy from the start, he was taken to the United States at the age of thirteen to participate in Ed Sullivan's Caravan of Stars, a traveling musical showcase for gifted children. At the end of this somewhat grueling tour, he decided to stay in America to study, and he was quickly awarded scholarships by the Juilliard School and the American-Israeli Foundation to study with noted pedagogue Ivan Galamian and his assistant, Dorothy DeLay.

Perlman made his formal debut in the spring of 1963 at Carnegie Hall, playing the Wienawski F-sharp minor Concerto with the National Orchestral Association; there happened to be a newspaper strike that week, so no critical notices were recorded. The next year, however, the young violinist entered the prestigious Levintritt Competition in New York (the same contest that helped to launch the careers of Van Cliburn and Pinchas Zukerman) and won first prize. Thereafter, he signed with legendary impresario Sol Hurok, who booked a fifty-city American tour for his rising star.

On April 3, 2001 the Reynoldsburg High School Orchestra students had another wonderful experience as they heard a concert presented by world famous violinist, Itzhak Perlman. Perlman performed a variety of music that kept our students in awe. As some of the students noted, “He is truly a master. How can anyone play so beautifully?” Once again, BASS is to be thanked for providing this enriching experience for the students.

LOUIS (AP) - Violinist Itzhak Perlman will serve as music adviser to the financially troubled St. Louis Symphony Orchestra for the next two concert seasons, the symphony announced Thursday. Perlman’s work with the symphony largely will be artistic and behind the scenes, said Randy Adams, the symphony’s president and executive director. Adams said Perlman will perform some of the duties but will not replace Hans Vonk, who cited health problems when he stepped down in May as the symphony’s music director and principal conductor. Perlman, who will conduct two concerts a year, said in a statement that he was excited about becoming music adviser. Perlman, 56, is principal guest conductor of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
