I get pretty excited when I hear of another Canadian world music group releasing a CD. The Canadian border is not far from Seattle and Seattle has its own world music community worthy of attention and yet, it is British Columbia's music scene that grabs my attention time and time again. I find that the musicians of British Columbia wield an uncompromising stance when it comes to experimenting with their varying traditions. The Canadian government's cultural program certainly allows for these musicians to explore their diverse cultures while also experimenting with other cultures found within their community. One of the musical highlights of British Columbia is the Vancouver World Music Collective which in itself brings together Asian, African, European and other musicians together. VWMC acts as a hub for a diverse traditional music groups that make British Columbia their home. The Chinese fusion group, Orchid Ensemble has certainly benefited from the above arrangement and this can be heard on their latest recording

Tue, December 31, 2002 Canada said farewell to Gzowski, Shuster, Findley By ERIC SHACKLETON (CP) - Beloved broadcaster Peter Gzowski, who as host of CBC's Morningside helped many Canadians better understand their own country, was among a number of prominent people who died in 2002. Canadians also said farewell to Frank Shuster, one half of the famed Wayne and Shuster comedy team, writer Timothy Findley and political commentator Dalton Camp. Gzowski, whose mellow, even-tempered voice was as familiar to many CBC radio listeners as their morning coffee, died of emphysema at age 67 in Toronto on Jan. 24. He hosted This Country in the Morning from 1971 to '74 and Morningside for 15 years starting in 1982. But he was also a newspaper columnist, magazine editor, television personality, the founder of a golf tournament in aid of literacy and the author of 16 books.

HAMISH MacCUNN
Main Composers Magazine Concerts ... Tavener Details for this page have been provided by the British Music society. A Scottish Composer, Conductor and Teacher. There was no shortage of Scottish composers in the nineteenth century and early years of this century but their names no longer appear on concert programmes in Scotland or in other parts of Great Britain. We might recall names such as William Wallace, John B. McEwen, Learmont Drysdale and Hamish MacCunn but most of us would find great difficulty in recalling any of their music with the exception perhaps of one work by Hamish MacCunn. By now readers of this who are also avid television watchers might have remembered that the BBC Television series "Sutherland s Law" shown in recent years used MacCunn s Overture Land of the Mountain and the Flood as its title music. MacCunn, born on 22 March 1868, was a composer, conductor and teacher of great merit. Pupils who studied with him during the short time he was at the Royal Academy maintained that he was a born teacher of charming and unselfish character. He gained a high reputation in London musical circles as well as in countries abroad and expressed his Scottish heritage of poetry and romance more successfully than any of his predecessors. Many of his works exhibit a folk music element and MacCunn had a genuine love of Scottish folksongs but he disliked imitation, and detested songs like Wha Wadna Fight for Charlie or Within a Mile o Edinburgh Toun .

33. Darien Scheme
One of the leading proponents was William paterson, a Scot He was an accomplished violinist and proficient in Howard, also from Birmingham, in victoria in 1867
http://freespace.virgin.net/doug.fraser/furth.htm
Darien Scheme The Darien Scheme was a plan, in the last years of the 17th century, to start a Scottish colony in Darien (on the isthmus of Panama). The idea was that this would enable Scottish merchants to take part in trade beteeen the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, instead of ships having to take the long and hazardous voyage round Cape Horn. One of the leading proponents was William Paterson, a Scot who was also a founder of the Bank of England. Subscriptions to finance the scheme rolled in from investors all over Scotland, including £100 from Patrick Balneves merchant in Dundee and £200 from his second cousin, James Balneves of Glencarse, and in a short time the required £400,000 had been raised - a vast amount of money for that time. On the 14th of July 1698, the expedition set sail from Scottish port of Leith, round the north of Scotland bound for Darien. However, the whole scheme finished in disaster due to disease in the swamps and jungles of Central America, and from attacks from native Indians and Spanish colonists. The results was that Scotland was greatly impoverished and the fiasco was a significant factor in bringing about the union of Scotland and England in 1707. A full account can be got in John Prebble's 'Darien', One of the many people who went to Darien, never to return, was Robert Balnaves , a steward's mate on board the ship 'Caledonia'. His brother, James, was appointed executor of his estate in 1707. There are no other clues as to who these might be but there is a family of Balnaves with a Robert and James from

The longest-running festival on the Sunshine Coast — the 31 st Festival of the Performing Arts —wraps up this weekend with a Piano Encore Concert at Raven’s Cry Theatre on Saturday, April 3 at 2 p.m., with admission by donation to benefit the awards and scholarships fund. In the course of this year’s volunteer-run Festival, professional adjudicators have reviewed 312 performances (with participants numbering much higher, as many bands and choirs were among those performing.) and awarded the largest-ever number of prizes, medals and trophies. Four outstanding young musicians will represent the Sunshine Coast at the BC Music Festival in Victoria : the golden-voiced Dora Brooks (vocals), multi-talented Stephen Beckmyer and Jeremy Williams (strings), Neal Andrews (piano) and flautist Maija Lund (woodwinds). Driven by love of music and a wish to support emerging musicians, volunteers and the working Board (who list vacuuming the Arts Centre and piano moving in their job descriptions) devote hours of time to the Festival organization. Still, fundraising to cover rent venues, pay adjudicator and technician fees and fill the awards pool is an ongoing chore, said retiring Festival President Dorothy Fraser. “All the money we get to run this thing comes from community donations, and a grant from the SCRD,” Fraser noted. “We have wonderful community support from various businesses, particularly Marketplace IGA in
