Violinists' Discographies on the Web
The
following web sites all have pages listing details of the recordings of the artist to which the link refers. Many researchers will find these lists invaluable. Alas, no two discographies are alike. Many discographers compile lists of only the recordings and the catalogue numbers. But some also list recording dates and a very few include matrix numbers. The occasional list will supply recording details including location information. Very few follow the conventions for writing discographies, but never the less provide the required information. We may never achieve uniformity on these pages, but so long as they are available, the information will be available for future use. Violin Land would like to thank every hard-working and diligent discographer, for, without them it would be a sadder world. A B C D ... Z A

LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER
January 12, 2000, 8-10 PM
"New York Philharmonic: Modern Times, Romantic Visions"
Kurt Masur, conductor; Anne-Sophie Mutter, violinist

Program Notes by MARTIN BOOKSPAN
For the second Live From Lincoln Center telecast of the New Year, we take our cameras and microphones back to Avery Fisher Hall for a concert by the New York Philharmonic and Kurt Masur, aided and abetted by famed violinist, Anne-Sophie Mutter. Nothing less than three masterpieces of the 20th century is the evening's menu, and their composersProkofiev, Berg and Sibeliushave earned honored places in the pantheon of creators whose music will continue to be heard as long as there are players to perform it and audiences to listen.
The concert begins with extracts from Prokofiev's music for the ballet, "Romeo and Juliet." Composed in 1935 for Moscow's Bolshoi Ballet company, Prokofiev's score was heard first in concert form in Moscow in October of that year. For reasons unclear it was three years before a ballet production was mountedand not in the Soviet Union but in Brunn, Czechoslovakia. That 1935 concert presentation was something of a harbinger of things to come: for though a number of ballet companies around the world have the work in their active repertories, one is much more likely to encounter Prokofiev's music for the ballet in the concert halla consequence of his having put together three Suites from the full score for concert performance . Indeed, one of the sections, "Montagues and Capulets," has been appropriated by Madison Avenue as background music for numerous radio and television commercials.

[62:50] full-price by Chia Han-Leon The special thing about Anne-Sophie Mutter is that in a recording of a work like this, the question is hardly about "authenticity", but simply whether she can instill in her performance something unique, something Mutteresque in this popular piece. With Karajan gone, so to speak, one would not expect the lusciousness, the gourmet sumptiousness of her previous recording with the great maestro. Instead, one looks for that distinct strength of personality, that "I don't care what you think but I'd like you to hear it" so characteristic of this favourite violinist of DG. For me, Ms Mutter is a great musician because she both fascinates and frustrates listeners. As with other great art and great artists, this is their trademark. An example of this is her tone, perplexing with its cool, penetratingly heated, steely energy. I have yet to find the right words to describe the Mutter touch. Likewise this CD package, a meticulous production wrought with much polish, including an informal interview Ms Mutter has with "the man without a tie in row 17" (I don't understand the reference - someone enlighten me?) - a touch personal, a touch revealing, a touch cryptic, even a little pretentious and self-effacing (it

(HL.50484221) The multi-talented André Previn composed this three-movement concerto on commission from the Boston Symphony Orchestra for violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter. The concerto was actually written during the months before the marriage of Mutter and Previn. It was premiered on March 14, 2002 at Symphony Hall, Boston. The composer's feelings and admiration for Mutter and the BSO come through in this expansively tuneful, warm music. The piece reflects Previn's early childhood memories of Germany, incorporating a German children's song in the third movement. Previn and Mutter recorded the concerto for a CD released by Deutsche-Grammophon in October, 2003. Duration: c. 38 minutes. Browse Similar Items In: Sheet Music Violin Music Modern ... BEETHOVEN: VIOLIN CONCERTO, ROMANCES
(DEUTSCHE GRAMMOPHON)
This new recording of the Beethoven Concerto is a technical marvel. The gorgeous silken tone Mutter produces at either end of her violin’s range attests to her mastery of the instrument. Everything is precisely in tune. And Masur has the New Yorkers sounding better than they have in years. The strings have a warm full sound, but he never lets them cover the glow of the brass or the character of the winds. Everything about this recording has a deep, luxuriant sound that you feel almost guilty reveling in. Interpretation is another matter. Mutter will slow down at a cadence or at the top of an upward run, as if to point out all the gorgeous violin playing that’s taking place. Target notes are approached with a slide from below, church-choir style. In the Allegro non troppo, she takes so much freedom with the (already slow) tempos that the movement begins to lose its shape. This pushing and pulling is probably meant to make her reading sound searching and profound, but more often than not it just comes off as affected. (And what happened to the pizzicato in the Rondo?) That Masur manages to keep the orchestra with her is a testament to his skill. The same impulses permeate the Romances, albeit less intrusively. Mutter may indeed be a great violinist, but on the evidence of this recording, she’s not yet a great musician.

MUSIC:
Mutter brings 20th century composers, classical tunes to public By Howard Ho Daily Bruin Contributor Twentieth century music lost the mainstream audience as far back as the 1913 premiere of Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring." But alas, this music has found its patron in Anne-Sophie Mutter, the Grammy-winning virtuoso violinist. Mutter performed an eclectic mix of the most revolutionary 20th century composers, including Stravinsky, Prokofiev and Shostakovich, at Royce Hall last Thursday. Instead of alienating the audience, she managed to hold them with precise playing and delightful pieces. The night began with Arvo Paert's "Fratres," a haunting piece that is dazzling in its vitality. "Fratres" allowed Mutter an opportunity to display her virtuosity, opening with fast continuous arpeggios that built up until a single piano tone broke through. That moment alone made the concert worthwhile. The ensuing pieces highlighted Mutter's versatility as a performer as well as the strength of her ensemble cast. Stravinsky's "Suite Italienne" required extensive string work while the Shostakovich Trio "No. 2" called for expressiveness. In both, Lambert Orkis, Mutter's perennial accompanist, delighted audiences with a solid backbone of sound that Mutter so gracefully ornated.

CD Review: Vivaldi's The Four Seasons By John Sidgwick
LONDON, 7 July 2000
- I am second-to-none in my enthusiasm for the performance of early music on period instruments. Nevertheless, I can take equal pleasure from fine playing of such music on modern instruments. Perhaps not all. Take the music of Rameau. Somehow, it cries out for baroque strings and winds and for the harpsichord. On the other hand, one might have thought that the same would apply to Pugnani. Yet there is a recording made in 1937 by Henri Temianka of this composer's Violin Sonata in E major
All this brings me to the recordings of Vivaldi's The Four Seasons made in 1999 by Anne-Sophie Mutter with the Trondheim Soloists and by David Juritz with the London Mozart Players. Given the vagaries of the English climate, which in the course of a single day can make you experience the whole gamut of a year's weather, I decided to haul out a huge pair of earphones and listen to Vivaldi's music in the peace of my north-London garden. There, in the company of a wide variety of birds, of the inevitable squirrels and with occasional visits by the resident fox, I listened to the Venetian composer's evocation of country life until I was eventually driven indoors by a hail-storm.
