Anne-Sophie Mutter
Now at the pinnacle of her career, the German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter has recently triumphed in New York City and nationwide with a spectacular series of programs surveying the 20th-century violin literature. A marathon of eight orchestral and chamber music concerts in Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall and at Carnegie Hall within twelve days, and a repertory comprising the music of 14 different composers, had the musical press reaching for superlatives that included, "Her performance was, altogether, a triumph." The New York Times; "Mutter has it all: audience acclaim, critical respect, a technique second to none, a sense of musical adventure, the luxury to play what she wants, and classic ice-princess beauty." New York Magazine; "What to say about an artist who is exactly as good as her publicists say she is?" The New Yorker.

The answer is: YOU do, if it's this recording you're thinking of purchasing. First, the packaging is incredibly enticing (even without the sexy photo of Mutter! )and unusual opening, as it does, almost like origami. Then there's the sound: DGG must be congratulated. It is rare that one feels, even with a mediocre home sound system or a poor one in the car, as if the music is being played just for you and right in your presence. Then there's Mutter. On this recording, she is nothing short of perfection. I am very happy to own this truly first class rendition of the Vivaldi warhorse. Tour 2000 / Jean Sibelius
Jean Sibelius began taking piano lessons 1874. At the age of 14 he took up the violin. Sibelius long entertained the desire of becoming a violinist, so he applied for a job at the Vienna Philharmonic. Shortly before that, in 1885, he had begun to study law at the University of Helsinki. But soon he abandoned law for music and studied violin and composition under Martin Wegelius. Sibelius was inspired by the Finnish landscape, and you can hear it in his music. His seven symphonies are a case in point. In their chronolgy, they exhibit a continuous tightening in the manner in which they are formed. Whereas first symphony was very opulent, close to the works of Tchaikovsky, the last three bear the singular vocabulary of an individual signature.
This great composer published no more works after 1926. Why nothing was heard from him until his death in 1957 remains a mystery.
Violin Concerto in D minor, opus 47
The third movement is a spirited finale with a poignantly and wildly moving theme. Here, one is totally dependent upon the sensibility and reaction speed of the conductor if one hopes to be able to present the full-character virtuosity in an undisturbed manner and in full enjoyment.

"The Berlin Recital" (Deutsche Grammophon)
Taped before a live audience with the applause surgically removed, presumably to encourage airplay this recital showcases just how vital an artist violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter has become. The imaginative phrasing and vibrato in Mozart's E Minor Sonata deftly balances lyricism with the music's classical order. The Debussy and Franck sonatas benefit from her pellucid tone but never sacrifice viscera. The Brahms miniatures are full of brio. Two complaints: The engineering seems to mute dynamics at times, and the modern music that's spurred so much recent growth in Mutter is absent. Ludwig van Beethoven's Violin Sonatas with Anne-Sophie Mutter and Lambert Orkis
Cycle begins airing on Classica (Germany) on April 28, 2001
In 1998 the German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter dedicated herself to what was no doubt the most important project of her career to date. She performed all ten violin sonatas of Ludwig van Beethoven on a world tour with the pianist Lambert Orkis. It was a climax in the longtime collaboration between the two artists. The live recording of the sonatas was released in fall 1998, while the tour was still underway. For this recording, the two artists won a prestigious Grammy Award in February 2000. Anne-Sophie Mutter's dazzling career began when the thirteen-year-old girl caught the attention of Herbert von Karajan, who promptly hired her to concertize with the Berlin Philharmonic. Today she numbers among the greatest violinists in the world. "For two hours we take part in a wonderfully spontaneous, edgy, witty, but at times also introspective dialogue - amazingly assured, freely phrased, masterfully braving every technical obstacle…"

In 1987 Mutter created the Rudolf-Eberle Foundation; a foundation which nowadays works worldwide to support young musicians playing string instruments
Mutter has also an important compromise with the medical and social problems in our time; organizing regularly benefic concerts.

Interview With A Violin Goddess Star German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter speaks to Lionel Choi while in Singapore on December 1st, 1997. (Point your mouse here to read an article written by the interviewer for The Straits Times, a daily newspaper in Singapore, based on this conversation with Ms Mutter.) This is your second visit to Singapore. So what are your impressions of this country?
This country combines modern technology, science of our time, very vital economics, with the roots of tradition. That would of course make Singapore, like Hong Kong, one of the very fascinating cities for Europeans, seeing the leap of the long tradition into the future. One of the reasons why I come back is that music plays such an important role in Singapore and it will more and more in the future, so it's a very interesting new part of my schedule actually to add, other than the usual places I have been working at for the last 20 years.
And the Singaporean audience, how is it different from one in Europe or in America?
Do you feel that the local audience is not as sophisticated?

Reviews in December 1997
Johannes Brahms (1833 - 1897) Violin Concerto in D major, Op.77 Robert Schumann (1810 - 1856) Fantasy for Violin and Orchestra in C major, Op.131 Anne-Sophie Mutter, violin / New York Philharmonic Orchestra / Kurt Masur (DG 457 075 - 2) Category : Romantic - Orchestral I reviewed a reissue of Anne-Sophie Mutter's famous recording of the Brahms violin concerto with Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic in April 1996 , and found it thoroughly enjoyable. Mutter's playing had so much depth, strength and maturity that for a moment, I forgot that she was merely a teenager when she made that recording. People who have followed the young German violinist's career closely will have seen her blossom from precocious child prodigy to violin goddess. And her playing too has grown by leaps and bounds - as she emerged from those Karajan days, she began to find an even stronger artistic personality, or a more distinctive 'voice' of her own. Her violin playing, already phenomenal by any standards, had taken on a new dimension: The choice of colours was widened, her tonal palette more daringly varied. Her 'sound' had taken on a whole new character of its own. Most important of all, she communicated the music with an even stronger, more assertive, determined and confident personality.
