MIT Hosts Violinst's Boston Premiere
By Guan-Jong (John) Chen, Class of 2004
(Tech Talk April 25, 2001)
Stefan Milenkovich At 24, Stefan Milenkovich has already won top prizes in numerous prestigious violin competitions in the US and abroad. He gave his 1,000th concert and performed for Ronald Reagan, Mikhail Gorbachev and Pope John Paul II all before he turned 18. "If extraordinary technique is the measure of a true virtuoso, then without doubt violinist Stefan Milenkovich has achieved virtuoso status," wrote one critic. On Sunday, April 29, the distinguished Serbian violinist will perform at 8pm in Kresge Auditorium, an event organized by the MIT Organization of Serbian Students (MOST). Milica Radisic, the president of MOST, called Mr. Milenkovich is "the most famous Serbian violinist and one of the finest young artists worldwide. We thought it would be a great honor for MIT to host his Boston-area premiere and for our club to organize such an event." All proceeds of the recital will go to a charitable organization in Serbia. "Most of the members of our club came from Serbia in the past few years, and we are aware of the hardship people in Serbia go through on daily basis," said Ms. Radisic. "Since [Mr. Milenkovich] generously gave up most of his fee to help this cause the final call on what particular charity the money should go to will be decided with him."

Recently featured on CNN's "Paula Zahn Now" playing the Vivaldi Double Concerto with Paula Zahn herself, Ani Aznavoorian has established herself as one of the premier cellists of her generation. At just twenty-six years of age, Ani has already been soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Pops, the Tokyo Philharmonic, the Helsinki Philharmonic, the Finnish Radio Symphony, the International Sejong Soloists, the Indianapolis Philharmonic, the San Jose Symphony, the Juilliard Orchestra, Concertante di Chicago, and the Edmonton Symphony. She has performed throughout the United States, Italy, France, Finland, Yugoslavia, Japan, Korea, Australia, Taiwan, and Canada. Recently, Ms. Aznavoorian was awarded the prestigious Bunkamura Orchard Hall Award for her outstanding level of cello playing and artistry.  She was the only American to receive the award, and she consequently performed throughout Japan including a performance with the Tokyo Philharmonic in Orchard Hall. Also, Ms. Aznavoorian substituted for Natalia Gutman with only 12 hours notice in three performances of the Shostakovich Cello Concerto no. 1 with the San Jose Symphony, being hailed by audiences and the critics alike. In addition to her numerous appearances with orchestras, she is a frequent recitalist and has performed in Weill Hall and Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Ravinia's Bennett Hall, Hawrelak Park, Aspen's Harris Hall, the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series, WFMT Live from Studio 1, and the Music in the Loft Concert Series.

Violinist Milenkovich to perform
When Stefan Milenkovich was 10 years old, he played his violin for President Ronald Reagan at a Christmas concert. By the time he was 14, he had added Mikhail Gorbachev and Pope John Paul II to his list of famous spectators. Now, 11 years after his performance at the Vatican, Milenkovich will play his second consecutive McCain Performance Series recital at 8 p.m., Friday, Feb. 8, in All Faiths Chapel. This is his only performance in Kansas. Born in the former Yugoslavia, Milenkovich began playing the violin at the age of 3. He won his first international competition at 7 and gave his 1,000th concert at age 16. When he was 18, he became the youngest student to graduate with a music degree from the University of Belgrade. Milenkovich will play pieces from Bach, Saint-Saens, Bloch, Novacek, Tchaikovsky, Sarasate and Paganini. In addition to the recital, Milenkovich is in residency with the Wamego and Manhattan public schools. The performance is sponsored by Capitol Federal Savings. Additional funding has been provided in part by the Kansas Arts Commission, the National Endowment for the Arts and the K-State Fine arts fee.

Milenkovich on Right Musical Path

Indianapolis Star, Indiana
October 2, 1995
Until Sunday night I thought I was going to have to spend the rest of my life mentioning only Ida Kavafian every time Ravel's Sonata in G Major came up. While Kavafian's performance of the work in the 1982 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis remains memorable, Stefan Milenkovich's interpretation now can be discussed in the same breath. The 18-year-old silver-medalist of last year's fourth quadrennial competition included the Ravel in his all-sonata benefit recital for the Indiana Scholarship Fund (four stars out of four) for the Aspen Music School in the DeHann Fine Arts Center. He opened and closed with solo worksin order, J.S. Bach's Second Sonata in A Minor and Eugene Ysaye's Ballade Sonata No. 3 . Between these, his mother, pianist Lidia Caenazzo, joined him for Ravel's G Major and, after intermission, the big Frank A Major Sonata Frankly, when it comes to the violin competitions [of Indianapolis], I'm a devout silver-medalist, preferring [Ida] Kavafian in the first one, Leonidas Kavakos in the second, Marco Rizzi in the third and Milenkovich in the fourth. Of these, the young Yugoslav-born Milenkovich is the most impressive. Some people have said he should stop studying with his father, who is not famous as a fiddler or teacher, and take up with an artist-teacher. Perhaps, but why fix what's not broken?

Stefan Milenkovich
Violinist Stefan Milenkovich began to play the violin at the age of three under the guidance of his father (who remained his teacher for the following 17 years). He quickly showed a rare talent that led him to his first appearance with an orchestra at the age of five, and his first prize at the Jaroslav Kozian International Violin Competition at the age of seven. The following year, at the age of eight, he made his debut in Belgrade as well as his first album recording. This opened the doors to the West, taking him the following year on a big tour in Italy, followed in the years to come by performances throughout Russia, Germany, France, Belgium, Holland, Finland, Switzerland, Israel, Great Britain, Spain, Turkey, Croatia, Poland, Bulgaria, Sri Lanka, Mexico, China and Australia.
He has appeared as soloist with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, the Helsinki Philharmonic, the Orchestra of Radio-France, the National Orchestra of Belgium, the Belgrade Philharmonic, the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra, the Mexico State Symphony, the Orquestra Sinfonica de Estado de Sao Paolo in Brazil, and the Melbourne and Queensland symphonies in Australia, and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra in a benefit concert at Alice Tully Hall, and he has played under the batons of such conductors as Lorin Maazel, Daniel Oren and Vladimir Fedoseyev. He was invited to play for President Ronald Reagan at a Christmas concert in Washington at the age of 10, for Mikhail Gorbachev at the age of 11 when Mr. Gorbachev paid a state visit to Belgrade, and at The Vatican for Pope John Paul II at the age of 14. At the age of sixteen he played his 1000th concert in Monterrey, Mexico.

TIME OUT NEW YORK - APRIL 9, 1998 Yugo Guy! by Jeremy Caplan
Belgrade-born violinist Stefan Milenkovich, good pal of political bigwigs, makes his Young Concert Artists debut at the Y. Search the halls of Juilliard, and chances are you'll find only one student who can count the Pope, Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev among his fans. Stefan Milenkovicha 21-year-old violinist from the former Yugoslaviaserenaded Reagan at the White House, is a personal friend of Gorbachev and will meet the Pope for the third time next month. Before lunching at the Vatican, however, Milenkovich has local business to attend. A winner of the 1997 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, the Belgrade-born virtuoso makes his New York debut at the 92nd Street Y on Tuesday 14. "Coming from a place like Belgrade, I find that people think of the worst things," Milenkovich says. "I want to prove that something nice can come from that part of the worldnot just war and crisis." Milenkovich began playing the violin when he was three years old; until this year, he studied in his hometown under his father's tutelage. By the time he was 18, he had played over a thousand concerts worldwide, won several international competitions, recorded two CDs and earned a music degree from the University of Belgrade. He's currently enrolled in Juilliard's exclusive Professional Studies program as a student of violin doyenne Dorothy DeLay, instructor to the starsincluding Itzhak Perlman, Gil Shaham and Sarah Chang.
