The real question, is she continuing to grow? Her latest recital here Jan. 20 showed the one-time Japanese violin prodigy tackling a substantial (though hardly overwhelming) program, running through both the musical and chronological alphabets from Beethoven to Webern. She is clearly at a crossroads, having to decide whether she's going up or down, having to see how she can broaden her horizons, having to weigh her many options. Will she tackle other musics, like clarinetist Richard Stoltzman and cellist Yo-Yo Ma? Will she even take on some living composers in her repertoire? Twenty years after her concert debut, she is a different figure: Then, the Osaka-born child came on with cherubic cuteness, producing tones of cherubic purity and lyricism-the result of starting "fiddling around" at the prococious age of 2. Today she is 30, very much at home in America, wearing bell-bottom white pants, unafraid to produce some coarser tones for strong effect.

Surrounded by music from birth, as her violinist mother Setsu Goto took her to orchestral rehearsals, she soon fell in love with the violin, and began her first lessons on her own tiny instrument at three. Midori studied and practised daily with Setsu and made astonishing progress. At six, she made her concert debut in her native Osaka, Japan performing one of the extremely difficult Paganini Caprices before a delighted audience, and receiving her first standing ovation of many throughout her distinguished career. E-mail this article Print this article Search archive Sometimes good things are worth waiting for. That white-hot finale sent the audience to its feet for a well-deserved ovation. Concert review Midori, violinist, in Distinguished Artists recital with pianist Robert McDonald; Benaroya Hall, Wednesday night. The Danielpour piece, called "As Night Falls on Barjeantane," was the evening's dark horse. Composed in 2001 during a sojourn in southern France, the work is an extended reverie for violin and piano. Rich chords undergo sudden modulations into new harmonies, with evanescent textures that recall Debussy. It's a highly successful piece, showing off the small but lovely violin tone Midori commands. The first half of the program was good but not brilliant. Beethoven's "Spring" Sonata was a bit underplayed, a tactic that is dangerous for a violinist whose dynamic range is already fairly narrow. McDonald partnered her carefully, but the balances weren't perfect. Perhaps Midori's health was a factor. She broke off the second movement of the Beethoven with a prolonged coughing fit, then restarted the movement and completed the sonata with no further delays.
