MIDORI: VIOLINIST, 30, AT THE CROSSROADS

BERKELEY-I do not believe that Midori is slipping. The real question, is she continuing to grow?
Her latest recital here Jan. 20 showed the one-time Japanese violin prodigy tackling a substantial (though hardly overwhelming) program, running through both the musical and chronological alphabets from Beethoven to Webern.
She is clearly at a crossroads, having to decide whether she's going up or down, having to see how she can broaden her horizons, having to weigh her many options. Will she tackle other musics, like clarinetist Richard Stoltzman and cellist Yo-Yo Ma? Will she even take on some living composers in her repertoire?
Twenty years after her concert debut, she is a different figure: Then, the Osaka-born child came on with cherubic cuteness, producing tones of cherubic purity and lyricism-the result of starting "fiddling around" at the prococious age of 2. Today she is 30, very much at home in America, wearing bell-bottom white pants, unafraid to produce some coarser tones for strong effect.

Welcoming Midori
Midori's 2001-02 season began with the National Symphony's season-opening gala in Washington, D.C., followed by a tour of Japan with the Pittsburgh Symphony, and appearances with the Munich Philharmonic, the Frankfurt Opera Orchestra, the Dallas Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. She continued her annual recital touring with Robert McDonald in the U.S. and many countries abroad, including France, Germany, Switzerland, Norway, and Italy. Midori received two prestigious awards in the Fall of 2001: the coveted Avery Fisher Prize, which is bestowed on established artists in recognition of their career accomplishments and comes with a $50,000 cash award, and the Instrumentalist of the Year award from Musical America, the bible of the music industry. As part of Midori's 20th anniversary season, commemorative events have been planned throughout the world: the celebrations began in Japan in May 2002 as Midori played a major recital tour with pianist Robert McDonald. She also initiated a unique series of concerts titled "Total Experience," based on the concept of "kizuna," the Japanese word for human interconnectedness. These appearances were in small towns all over Japan, and involved experimentation with thematic concepts and proactive audience participation. Throughout the 2002-03 season, Midori will also make it a point to perform with many of the international orchestras and in the key concert halls around the world which have played an important role in the development of her career.

* MIDORI *
Music is a moral law.
It gives a soul to the universe,
wings to the mind, flight to the imagination,
a charm to sadness, gaiety and life to everything.
It is the essence of order, and leads to all that is good,
just and beautiful, of which it is the invisible,
but nevertheless dazzling,
passionate, and eternal form. -Plato
MIDORI has been playing violin for 24 of her 27 years, and performing for 21. Surrounded by music from birth, as her violinist mother Setsu Goto took her to orchestral rehearsals, she soon fell in love with the violin, and began her first lessons on her own tiny instrument at three. Midori studied and practised daily with Setsu and made astonishing progress. At six, she made her concert debut in her native Osaka, Japan performing one of the extremely difficult Paganini Caprices before a delighted audience, and receiving her first standing ovation of many throughout her distinguished career.
Two years later, an American friend of Setsu's taped the prodigy playing concertos by Bach, Paganini and Saint-Saens and sent the recording to renowned Juilliard teacher Dorothy DeLay, who was so astonished by the playing she invited Midori to the 1981 Aspen Music Festival . At Aspen, Midori met the virtuoso Pinchas Zukerman, who wept when he heard the tiny child perform a difficult Bartok concerto, and who later became a close friend and mentor. Midori also performed for Miss de Lay at Aspen. Her mature interpretation of the mighty

The Kids' Corner
Let's Talk About: Women's History
At the tender age of 3, Midori knew what she wanted. She wanted to play the violin, just like her mother. Setsu Goto presented a violin to her precocious daughter and as she watched the girl use the bow to stroke the strings with a mysterious understanding, she realized Midori possessed a natural talent. By the time Midori was 4, lessons had begun in earnest, with her mother as her teacher. Goto took the energetic girl from Japan to New York City for intense instruction by other teachers. Midori enthusiastically shares her love of music with children in Japan and New York City. Of her Midori Foundation, called Midori and Friends, she says, "The aim is to inspire children through music … to learn about other cultures and discipline and dedicating yourself to something you love very much." Besides her active recording career, Midori finds time to perform in 120 foundation concerts each year with the help of the Maia Quartet, pianist Emanuel Ax and other chamber and recital musicians.

Midori, violinist, in Distinguished Artists recital with pianist Robert McDonald; Benaroya Hall, Wednesday night. The Danielpour piece, called "As Night Falls on Barjeantane," was the evening's dark horse. Composed in 2001 during a sojourn in southern France, the work is an extended reverie for violin and piano. Rich chords undergo sudden modulations into new harmonies, with evanescent textures that recall Debussy. It's a highly successful piece, showing off the small but lovely violin tone Midori commands. The first half of the program was good but not brilliant. Beethoven's "Spring" Sonata was a bit underplayed, a tactic that is dangerous for a violinist whose dynamic range is already fairly narrow. McDonald partnered her carefully, but the balances weren't perfect. Perhaps Midori's health was a factor. She broke off the second movement of the Beethoven with a prolonged coughing fit, then restarted the movement and completed the sonata with no further delays.

KSO opens season with violinist Midori on Sept. 13
The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra's 2002-2003 Masterworks season opens at 8:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, at the Knoxville Civic Auditorium. Violinist Midori returns to the KSO stage 15 years after she captivated sold-out audiences at her 1987 Knoxville debut, this time as the star of the season-opening gala, according to a KSO news release. The program will include "Variations on America," by Ives/Schuman, the Siebelius Violin Concerto, and "Pictures at an Exhibition" by Mussorgsky/Ravel. "The biggest impression we ever had with a guest artist in this community was when Midori first played here," Maestro Kirk Trevor is quoted in the news release as saying. "Ever since, we've been trying to get her back. She is one of the most sought-after artists of our time, and we are thrilled to have her return to Knoxville during my last season." Trevor stated, "I first met Midori in the summer of my very first season with the KSO while in Dallas. Back then, Midori was already a veteran star of 13, so I was extremely nervous. What I remembered most about that day was standing backstage with a young 13-year-old, then a few moments later, standing on the podium with someone that seemed to have matured 20 years or more in the few seconds it took to put the violin under her chin." Midori is now in the second decade of her career. Her performing schedule, balancing recitals and appearances with the symphonic ensembles, takes her to the great concert stages of Europe, North America and the Far East each year.
