Bach spin
Lara St. John wants to give classical music more exposure. On her new CD, she uses nontraditional arrangements and instruments to rethink Bach.
By JOHN FLEMING, Times Performing Arts Critic published May 8, 2003 [Publicity photo] Many classical musicians have their own Web sites, but few are quite as entertaining as the one for Lara St. John. It includes the violinist's list of best and worst airlines, her thoughts on the plight of Canadian orchestras and tips on how to get into concerts for free. Would Midori, or Hilary Hahn, or Anne Akiko Meyers include a link to a fan's page hailing her as that "voluptuous vixen of violin virtuosity"? Not likely. St. John, the soloist this weekend with the Florida Orchestra, is as famous for her topless CD cover photo as for her top-level playing of Bach, and it doesn't seem to bother her a bit.

SEARCHING FOR THE PERFECT BALANCE
by ANITA MALIK
The grass is always greener on the other side.
We've all heard the age-old adage, but still, many of us, like Paul Kan , 34, just need to figure it out for ourselves. Kan left the world of corporate finance and Wall Street trading to pursue a longtime interest, photography.
What he discovered along the way was an incredible reconnection with his ancestry and cultural history, but also a bumpy road in terms of financial security. The New York native and MIT graduate continues to struggle with what path to take. He said he knows he will always take pictures for himself, but he is not sure if he is cut out for the life of a struggling artist. The little boy, who once dreamed of a being a fighter jet pilot and was named "most American " in his high school, is all grown up and today understands the importance of carefully thinking through decisions. "You know, the grass is always greener on the other side, I've been on both sides and you always think the 'other' life is better," Kan said. He shared more of his thoughts on photography and finding a balanced life in a recent interview.

Friday night's May Festival audience heard two contrasting Mozarts,
the magnificent May Festival Chorus, four outstanding soloists and one extraordinary James Conlon. The strength of the Cincinnati May Festival resounded on two superb weekend concerts. S aturday night’s all-Wagner program at Music Hall had everything: a cast of peerless singers, the indispensable Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the May Festival Chorus and music director James Conlon. Sunday’s concert at the Cathedral Basilica in Covington showcased the chorus, which under director Robert Porco has reached a formidable level of achievement. I thought of Mario Lanza and Ottorino Respighi during Saturday night’s Cincinnati Pops concert at Music Hall. Tenor Daniel Rodriguez, whose ideal is Lanza, showed himself a worthy successor to the 1950s singing icon, while Miklos Rozsa's scores for Hollywood Roman epics yielded nothing to splashy scores like Respighi’s "Pines of Rome." Front and center in the wake of 911 were the members of the New York City Police Department.
