Last Updated: April 4, 2004, 08:25:41 AM PDT Legendary performer Rita Moreno, star violinist Anne Akiko Meyers and celebrated cellist Zuill Bailey are among the guest artists who will appear with the Modesto Symphony Orchestra next season. The 2004-05 season is organized around the theme of a symphonic passport, said conductor Darryl One. Each concert will focus on a different region or culture. "It's a trip around the world," One said. Moreno starts the ball rolling Sept. 11 with a Picnic at the Pops performance. The 72-year-old actress ("West Side Story," "The King and I") is the only female performer to have won an Oscar, an Emmy, a Tony, a Grammy and a Golden Globe. Her Modesto performance is titled "Hot Latin Nights"; the program will be announced later. Meyers, the biggest classical name on the season schedule, will perform Henri Wieniawski's Violin Concerto No. 2 in D Minor in February at the "Slavic Adventures" program. She is one of the most sought-after violinists performing today and has forged a successful recording career.

Christian Tetzlaff, violin, Sabine Meyer, clarinet, Boris Pergamenschikow, cello. Lars Vogt, piano. Three CDs (EMI Classics, 5-57524-2; 5-52525-2; 5-57526-2) Recorded live at the 2002 Heimbach Chamber Music Festival, this three-CD set brings together four superb artists whose traversal of all the Brahms sonatas (plus some Schumann and Berg) combines technical and ensemble perfection with the inspired spontaneity attainable only in live performance. Lars Vogt, the festival's artistic director, is a strong, empathetic partner throughout, though the recorded balance sometimes favors the piano and exaggerates dynamic contrasts. Boris Pergamenschikow's playing of the cello sonatas is distinguished by its stately austerity and concentrated expressiveness. His tone is dark, warm, sonorous, and pure; his style is aristocratic, combining long, flowing lines with leisurely phrasing and loving attention to detail. The first sonata is somber, passionate, and serene, with enough time to make every note count; the second movement lilts, the fugue is clear. The second sonata goes from exuberance to mystery and courtly grace. Schumann's "Fantasy Pieces" are lovely, but the "Romances," originally for oboe, sound uncomfortable on the cello; unlike the Adagio and Allegro for horn, this is surely not the composer's own transcription. A Brahms song as an encore sings warmly.

THE VAIL VALLEY MUSIC FESTIVAL CELEBRATES ITS FOURTEENTH SEASON
Vail, Co.- The glorious sounds of orchestral and chamber music will fill the Rocky Mountain air once again from June 27 through August 5, 2001 as the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival celebrates its Fourteenth Season. This year's theme "2001: A Musical Odyssey - Masters from the Past and Present" marks the beginning of a new millennium of music and exploring the legacies of many great composers. Over 60 concerts performed by over 40 acclaimed soloists, ensembles and three resident orchestras - the Dallas Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic and Colorado Symphony Orchestras - will be held at the newly remodeled Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater/Vilar Pavilion in Vail, the Vilar Center for the Arts in Beaver Creek and additional lodges and residences throughout the Vail Valley.
The Colorado Symphony Orchestra and its Music Director Marin Alsop will open the Festival on June 27 at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater/Vilar Pavilion. The romantic inaugural program features the Festival's former Artistic Director and renowned violinist Ida Kavafian performing Dvorak's Romance in F Minor. The symphony will also perform a pops concert with Judy Collins and help the Vail Valley celebrate Independence Day with two free patriotic concerts on July 1 in Beaver Creek and July 4 in Vail with a narration by Jack Kemp.

The Management of New Arts (MNA) is one of the most prestigious arts management and promotion companies in Taiwan. The company initiated in 1991 and has established its reputation by engaging in presenting maestros of acknowledgement in the field of music as well as mounting The MNA International Children's Festival annually from 1992 to 1998. Spotlight Series gives women a chance to shine By Valerie Scher
CLASSICAL MUSIC CRITIC November 9, 2003 T here's something different about Mainly Mozart's eighth annual Spotlight Series: No men are in it. That's right. There won't be a single male in any of the chamber concerts slated between January and May. So why will Mainly Mozart spotlight women as never before? The musicians will appear at a variety of sites in San Diego County and Baja California, and some of the performances will raise money for area charities that assist women and children. The core of the series continues to be the concerts (all at 8 p.m.) at La Jolla's Neurosciences Institute, which donates the use of its 352-seat auditorium to Mainly Mozart. On Jan. 23, clarinetist Victoria Luperi will be joined at the institute by violinist Ida Levin, cellist Anne Williams and pianist Diane Walsh for a program of music by Mozart, Hindemith, Berg and Brahms. On Feb. 21, flutist Wincenc teams with violist Phelps and harpist Nancy Allen for a Bach-to-Bax lineup. March 13 brings violinist Meyers and pianist Reiko Aizawa in a recital including works by Mozart, Messiaen and Faure. Five-concert subscriptions are $175; $300 for the VIP package.
