Saturday, November 16, 2002 Meyers dazzles in CSO debut Violinist plays a profound Prokofiev
By Janelle Gelfand
The Cincinnati Enquirer
American violinist Anne Akiko Meyers made her Cincinnati debut 13 years ago in a recital for Matinee Musicale. It took far too long to bring back this dazzling artist, but on Thursday, she made an impressive debut with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra in Music Hall. Her vehicle was Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 1, a work that is as dreamlike and Impressionistic as Prokofiev's Second Concerto is full-blooded. What she brought to it was vivid imagination, infusing the concerto's meandering themes with personality and stunning finesse. Paavo Jarvi's program, which included ballet suites by Prokofiev and Ravel, was all about subtlety and orchestral color. No doubt some of the kinks in Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet Suite No. 3, which opened the program, will be ironed out by the time the CSO records it next week for Telarc. But the concluding Suite No. 2 from Ravel's Daphnis et C hloe (also to be recorded was a gorgeous display of orchestral musicianship that had the audience on its feet at the conclusion.

Pushing the envelope : Violinist Anne Akiko Meyers, who will perform at Bargemusic Dec. 11-14, enjoys introducing audiences to rarely heard composers. Peter Bussian By Kevin Filipski
for The Brooklyn Papers Anne Akiko Meyers, who makes her Bargemusic debut Dec. 11-14, admits she was warned about the 'dangers' of playing the barge.
"I've been told not to wear heels," the 33-year-old violinist says with a laugh, referring to the occasional swaying of the barge on the East River during a performance.
"Seriously, I'm really looking forward to playing there - it's such an old New York tradition to play the barge. It's something everybody should do - and I hope to get a reservation to [Peter] Luger's [Steakhouse] afterwards," she adds.
Meyers is equally enthusiastic about this weekend's programs.
"I really wanted to do Aaron Copland in Brooklyn," says Meyers, speaking of that most famous of composers who called this borough his home. "He grew up in a very middle-class family, and his dad had a department store there. Their real name was Kaplan, but [the immigration officials] screwed up and made it Copland."
Meyers' second recital, on Dec. 12, includes Copland's Violin Sonata, with pianist John Neuman, and she is understandably excited about returning it to her repertoire.

Anne Akiko Meyers mesmerized the audience with what seemed to be a duet performance with maestro Samuel Wong and the Honolulu Symphony.
    Symphony dances
    Review by Ruth O. Bingham
Special to the Star-Bulletin Not only talented, but beautiful as well so much for everyone being created equal: Renowned violinist and model Anne Akiko Meyers glided on stage Sunday in form-fitting white satin and proceeded to soar through Samuel Barber's Violin Concerto. Meyers played with passion, especially in angular outbursts that set off Barber's famously lyrical melodies. She played the concerto as if it were a duet with maestro Samuel Wong and the Honolulu Symphony, dovetailing into their climaxes, seamlessly sharing lines. In the third movement, a tour de force in perpetual motion, her long fingers fairly flew over the firestorm, and she ended grinning, clearly pleased. Meyers performed on a Vuillaume violin which had an exceptionally large, rich tone reminiscent of mezzo-soprano's throaty lower range. Even Meyers' Vuillaume, however, was occasionally covered by the orchestra; after all, there is only so much one instrument can do when pitted against a full orchestra. Perhaps audiences have been spoiled by carefully mixed recordings. Perhaps some degree of covering is inevitable in live performance; it is certainly preferable to checking climaxes. On Sunday, Meyers and Wong gave Barber's sumptuous climaxes free rein.
