"W" ENTRIES [ Marek Weber Orch. ]

This Austrian-born violinist and bandleader studied both in Berlin and Vienna. At just age 17, Weber was already showing his talent as a leader when conducting a Berlin hotel orchestra, and developing skills that he would later utilize in leading large orchestras specializing in Viennese Waltz music. After emigrating to the United States, Weber had a successful career in Radio and Recordings. During 1938-'39, he was the conductor for the 'Contented Hour' radio show (sponsored by Carnation Brand Condensed Milk), and continued to be musically active well into the 1940s. Interestingly, during his lifetime, Marek donated his violins to the Indiana University School of Music, where they were used by needy students. Later, in her will, his widow Mrs. Anna Weber established an endowment for the university that continued her husband's philanthropy and his love of music. Honoring the memory of her husband, The Anna Weber Endowment Fund provides two violin scholarships, at the IU School of Music, to be given annually to a male and a female student who demonstrate financial need. Photos: Evelyn von Michalofski Open Ears Festival In the 1920's composer Juliet Palmer Vilma Vitols , dancer Susan Macpherson and pianist Nicole Bellamy. Choreographed and co-directed by Bill James , the work incorporates stunning underwater images by filmmaker Nick de Pencier alongside rare footage from Venus of the South Seas (1924). Artist Evlyn von Michalofski 's fantastical costumes of metal, plastic tubing and industrial felt transform the three women into high-tech mermaids, while Paul Mathiesen 's lighting structure evokes the high-diving aquarium of Kellerman's vaudeville routines.
"an entrancing gloss on water-musics past and present ...Sleek and focussed, its references to romantic piano repertoire were clear but unparochial - a rippling polyphony of scales that mimicked the subtle geometry of light and movement on a pond, a repeated pitch treading minimalist waters as a phrase of Chopin lapped against it, a high G sharp struck like a hammer on an anvilas the simple harmonies beneath it mutated."

These '59 sessions find pianist Billie & her husband trumpeter DeDe on mostly duets cut when they were just re-discovered in New Orleans - they were soon to join the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Several tunes has backing by Brother Randolph on washboard, sounding like they're backing a tap-dancer! Also included are 3 Billie solo tunes originally issued on the LP sampler "Primitive Piano". REMEMBERING BILLY GRAHAM
June 20, 2003
"It was like riding a fire engine around a corner at 90 miles an houryou're just hanging on by the tips of your fingers". That was how drummer Billy Graham described playing with Charlie Parker to writer Mark Miller. That meeting occurred 50 years ago, on Saturday afternoon, February 7, 1953 at the Chez Paree on Stanley Street here in Montreal. At that Jazz Workshop concert, Graham joined Americans, guitarist Dick Garcia and pianist Valdo Williams (who was living here and playing at Rockhead's) and Hal Gaylor, a local bassist, who went on to the US to play with the likes of Paul Bley, Chico Hamilton, Tony Bennett and in trio co-op with Billy Bean and Walter Norris. On the fifth set of the afternoon they backed Charlie Parker on "Ornithology" and "Cool Blues" and stayed on for a rendition of "I'll Remember April" after "Bird" left the stage.
(Material that can be heard on the Uptown label CD release, "Charlie Parker, Montreal, 1953".) Actually Graham and Gaylor with Gordie Fleming, Yvan Landry and Al Baculis, played six tunes on the first set of that concert as the Canadian All Stars.
For a man of his large talent, Billy Graham left relatively few recordings, the Parker and Canadian All Star items already mentioned and CBC transcriptions with Fleming, Lacombe and Armas (Art) Maiste and (in the early 60s) three NFB soundtracks, "Of Sport and Men", "Runner" and "Ski" done with musicians like Baculis, Freddie Nichols, Jackson Rider, John Lanza, Maiste, Don Douglas, Herbie Spanier, Jack Shtyka, Nick Ayoub and Gerry Danovitchperhaps more material will emerge in time to be included on a 2CD retrospective of Gordie Fleming's careerone being compiled by Gordie's daughter Heidi and scheduled for release on Justin Time in 2004.

~reviewed by Rev. A. Strangerz 23.3 "One you lock the target, two you bait the line, three you slowly spread the net, and four..." I am caught. Front 242 playing at Chicago's Congress Theatre! The venue last famous for having the plaster falling off the nicely designed ceilings during the Chemical Brothers Show in 1998. I go with some friends of mine, Sam and Tish, a very travel worthy couple who are as happy to get out of the local scene for a night as me! It was a breeze, we managed to get the pre-sale price at the door, do to some problems we had with ticket-bastards. It only saved us $15, but that Is enough o splurge on dinner. There is just the right amount of chill in the air, and the excitement is building. I have been in the wrong place/wrong time for about a decade making it impossible to catch the Belgian bringers of industrial dance-hall death. As a promoter/DJ sure I am burned out on the classics (except "Don't Crash" ) , but this is live! Oh the expectations. With dinner done, and a good ride on the CTA, we head over to the Congress, and It Is a breeze, take reflective ticket out of pocket, hand It to the girl, rip. We are In. No line? Yet lots of people, the show Is set up rave style, and the lobby area of this massive building Is hosting It's own dance party. The line to get a beer, shows us how long the outside line once was.

DO YOU KNOW I?
Sadly enough when being taught "His-Story", InI only get bits and pieces of a few people who have contributed to the freeness of humanity. All through the Earth from Africa in the East to the Americas in the West, through many different time frames, revolution has been knocking on the door. King RastafarI has taught InI that it is very important to study these figures and what they stand for (even though they may not be here in the flesh), that what they have built and fought for, is what InI build and fight for and will still build and fight for in the future. Even though many have met their untimely fate by violence, many on this list have fought with non-violence as well as violence to reach that inevitable goal of freeness for InI the children of this time. By using their brain and muscle, these are a few of the names of who InI call "Foundation Builders" who must be recognized within "InI Story."
