    April 11 – 20, 2002
Seattle — Pacific Northwest Ballet (PNB) presents a tantalizing mix of tango-inspired ballets in “Tango Tonight,” a captivating program featuring two world premieres, Nicolo Fonte’s Almost Tango and Stephen Bayne’s El Tango , plus the return of Hans van Manen’s popular Five Tangos , April 11 – 20 at Mercer Arts Arena.
The mixed repertory program begins with Australian choreographer Stephen Baynes’ El Tango which had its genesis three years ago as a pas de deux Baynes created for The Australian Ballet where he is resident choreographer. In Baynes’ PNB-commissioned version he has expanded his new ballet for five couples. Set to a recording of music by legendary tango composer Astor Piazzolla, featuring Latvian classical violinist Gidon Kremer, El Tango offers a dramatic series of taut and shifting ensemble movements performed with precision and artistry by PNB dancers.

    INTERVIEW: The Changelings
    by Jett Black
In everything that is beautiful, here come the Changelings. Close your eyes and open both heart and soul to the transcendental music of the Changelings. Seductive, wondrous and varied, this quintet transports the hungry, romantic spirit beyond the toils of the day, beyond the walls of the desk, beyond the home and into tranquil bliss, an enchanted exploration of personal desires, needs and satisfying fantasy. Drifting as minstrels through the infamy of Atlanta, Georgia, Chandler Rentz, Regeana Morris, Nick Pagan, Damon Young and Paul Mercer conspire to charm and mystify you in blending Baroque ballads, modern ethereal enchantments and dark, mesmerizing, medieval incantations. Momentarily breaking the spell, we hear from this half somber, half smiling troupe concerning the imminent release of their fourth full-length CD and their plans for an upcoming tour, Summer 1999. Five musicians, all with bills, routine obligations, personal relationships and the occasional last minute surprise event manage to convene, compose, rehearse, perform and record. I am having a Brady Bunch moment here. In general, how does The Changelings win out over so many separate daily agendas?

    http://www.slipcue.com/music/jazz/sweetbands_01.html
My taste in jazz is, as they say, strictly from Squaresville. The stuff I love "sweet" dance band music and crooner tunes doesn't get a lot of respect in "real" jazz circles. Only recently have the jazz purists reluctantly and begrudgingly admitted that some of the big bands actually had it going on... For the most part, the hep cat crowd would prefer to believe that real jazz music began with Dizzy Gillespie, and only really picked up steam in the smoky confines of the 1950s. I, on the other hand, adore the softer stuff, and love delving into the corny but well-crafted sentimentality of the Tin Pan Alley tradition. And, frankly, I prefer listening to something I can hum along to, rather than some squonky improvisation that requires concerted effort to really "get". Hard jazz is just too damn cerebral for my tastes.. so here is my celebration of good old-fashioned corny, simple love songs, backed by perky little melodies. That being said, this page is a work in progress, and currently contains no content. Check back with me in a while. Some other pages of interest: Recommended Records

    "bach circle"
By Tom Moore, Early Music America, Winter 2002-03 It's a measure of the depths to which the recording industry has fallen that such an excellent disc should be issued by the ensemble that recorded it, rather than by a label that could provide more extensive distribution (it is not available through any of the major online sites). The Burney Ensemble was founded by flutist Sonja Boon, a student of Wilbert Hazelzet and Rachel Brown, in 1998; this disc, recorded in July of 2001, is the ensemble's first. The various works from Bach, his family, and his students, should all be familiar to devotees of this repertoire, but rarely have they been so well recorded. CD details

Comedy and music are the themes of Round Robin #28 , featuring another group of "Amos ‘n’ Andy" shows from Charles "Andy" Correll’s own disk collection; shows from Bing Crosby’s "Philco Radio Time" and "The Crosby-Clooney Show"; the fresh, crisp sounds of 1950’s jazz and the big bands with "Stars of Jazz," hosted by Bobby Troup and two band remotes featuring Jerry Gray and his Band of Today; music for your dancing pleasure with Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians; swinging wartime entertainment with "Johnny Mercer’s Music Shop;" and some unique and little-heard shows from a 1954 syndicated radio series starring "Mr. Showmanship" himself, Liberace.
Let’s get started with ten hilarious episodes of "Amos ‘n’ Andy," all from 1944 and as transferred directly from original 16” NBC lacquer transcriptions. All of these broadcasts have, unfortunately, had their commercials excised – their removal was at the request of Mr. Correll when he had the shows copied to tape in the early 1970's. However, we know that the outstanding audio quality of these programs wills more than make up for the editing.
(Note: titles have all been taken from the typewritten logs of the series, as maintained by Gosden and Correll.)

Renaissance Man Like Jazz Music, Trumpeter/Singer/Lyricist Larry Orenstein Improvised His Way To Successful Career Larry Orenstein, pictured above, surprises jazz icon Benny Carter, right, at the 2002 Big Band Academy of America's annual reunion in Studio City, CA. Orenstein played trumpet and sang in a number of big bands, worked in the studios, composed lyrics, acted in television and went into advertising. by Stephen Fratallone /Jazz Connection Magazine L arry Orenstein is a master at improvisation. In fact, the former trumpeter/band vocalist/lyricist who performed in the bands of Shep Fields, Joe Reichman, Paul Whiteman, and Ray Noble, among others, may be the only musician to have improvised his way into the music field and later improvised his way to a successful career in the business field. As a testament to his ability to adapt, he learned his crafts in both areas through intense "on-the-job-training," he said. "I faked it all the way, didn't I?" said Orenstein, who turns 85 this month, with a hardy chuckle via telephone from his home in Sherman Oaks, CA. "Like a good improviser, if you listen to the chords, and you hear what's going on around you, and if you're listening to the other cats, and if you have a good sense of the melody, and have imagination, and if you combine all these elements, you can come up with something fresh." Coming up with something fresh is exactly what Orenstein has done time and time again throughout his career in both the music and business arenas.
