Paul Mercer A self-taught musician and composer who has been performing for over twenty years, Paul Mercer has appeared at Dragon*Con for nearly a decade. He is best known as the violinist/violist for the ethereal neoclassical pop quintet (and longtime Dragon*Con performers) The Changelings , whose most recent album, Astronomica , was lauded as one of the Top Ten Albums of 2002 by The Village Voice After two decades of perfecting electronic violin sounds using external effects, Paul has focused on pure acoustic work. Recently he has collaborated with Tal-Kasia Productions, providing live accompaniment to their acclaimed interpretation of Marlowe's Doctor Faustus (Seven Stages Theater, Atlanta, Fall 2002). Currently Tal-Kasia Productions are creating a short film called Replacing Delphine inspired by Mercer's composition "Music Box." Filmed on location in the skeleton of a Southern Gothic mansion ravaged by fire, the silent film (shot in 35mm high definition black-and-white) features Mercer's soundtrack and will be submitted to this year's Cannes and Sundance Film Festivals. Mercer also co-wrote and co-produced the soundtracks written by The Changelings for the Noble Armada video game and the Netherworld haunted house. Currently Mercer is completing work on his long-awaited solo album

Here's a selection of pics from Dragon*Con 2000. I wish I'd taken more shots of people and costumes in general, but I'm an indifferent photographer and just kept forgetting to haul the camera out...I've never really had a camera before for any length of time, so I'm just not used to carrying one around. :)

GHOSTS is the solo project from Paul Mercer, the violinist best known for his work with the acclaimed ethereal neoclassical 5-piece, The Changelings Inspired by the instruments themselves, the pieces evoke the individual history of the instrument, whether it be an 18th century viola d'amore or an early Italian violin that spent part of its lifetime in Colonial India. The compositions feature electronically prepared antique violins, viola, and other "stringed" instruments such as tampura and autoharp. mp3s are now available from mp3.com. Alive with Ellington
Appalachian Summer Festival hosts famous grandson
by Robin Tolleson When the CD Digital Duke (GRP) was released in 1987, it affirmed that the Duke Ellington legacy would ring true even into the digital age. Duke's son, Mercer, who had conducted the Duke Ellington Orchestra since his father's death in 1974, assumed that role for this album (the Digital Duke band included members of the Orchestra and others); he also co-produced the work, with contemporary keyboardist Michael Abene. Ellington alumni Clark Terry, Louie Bellson, Barrie Lee Hall, Rocky White, Norris Turney, Britt Woodman and Al Grey came aboard to keep the authentic Ellington sound intact, and saxman Branford Marsalis, trumpeter Lew Soloff, and clarinet marvel Eddie Daniels joyously assured that this next generation of great players was indeed running with the torch. Marsalis breathes fire on the speedy "Cottontail," showing respect to the original Ben Webster solo while plotting his own course. "As a young punk, I was awed even to be called for this album," he explains. "In fact, I felt intimidated. I knew all the great Ellington records, and the contributions of men like Ben Webster, Johnny Hodges and Harry Carney. I even learned a lot of Paul Gonsalves solos years ago. I was very lucky to be on this date, and all I could hope for was to do a credible job by adapting myself to the setting." When Digital Duke was released, Paul Mercer Ellington was only 9 years old. The grandson of Duke Ellington, Paul grew up watching his father, Mercer, compose for and conduct the Orchestra. When Paul was 8, Mercer took him along on a tour to Japan, at one point turning to him to say, "Son, this is all yours; make sure you keep it going." Accordingly, Paul pursued a musical education, learning the art of being a band leader and conductor as well as studying drums, percussion, trumpet, piano and composition.

1st July 2002 -
A talented Lancaster based trio who have recently made quite an impact in the region's folk clubs and farther afield with their thoughtful and quietly compelling brand of contemporary acoustic songwriting. Their sound world is characterised by a blend of soft-hued twin-guitar work and well-harmonised vocal lines with alternating leads. Their well-observed and crafted songs have an assuredly melodic quality. Kate and Paul don't feel the need to need to prove their instrumental capabilities, so there's no bravado or blustering display of technique, just unobtrusively accomplished playing of filigree intricacy. Tony Taffinder adds a diversity to their arrangements with guitar, bouzouki, mandolin, mandola, fiddle, flute, whistles, harmonicas, bodhran, bass guitar and voice.

by Brent-Anthony Johnson At the young age of seventeen years, Michael Dimin heard two albums that would forever change his life’s course. The first, was Weather Report’s “Heavy Weather” , and the second was the eponymous recording of the, then, twenty-four-year-old Jaco Pastorius! For the past nearly 30 years, Michael’s study of the basses has taken him to a better understanding of the unique and beautiful relationship between melody, harmony and rhythm. His deep understanding of the concept of complete musicianship led him to Berklee College of Music in 1979, and has more recently placed him behind the teaching podium of NYC’s The Collective, where he is a frequent visiting instructor. It was while he was enrolled at Berklee College that he began to develop his chordal approach to the bass guitar. Michael comments, “I had heard of a Buffalo, NY based player who was performing a solo bass arrangement of the Jazz Standard “Misty”. I took the challenge to try it as well. I soon realized that this was the way to go in order to develop a better understanding of the relationship between harmony, melody and rhythm. I started to incorporate all of the aspects of jazz standards in a chord-melody style. I've termed these techniques, “ The Chordal Approach A few years later, in 1987, Michael began to share his understanding with a renewed fervor, and he re-wrote the chordal approach book, at that time.

The Changelings
Ventura Theatre
The Changelings tastefully combine folk, world, ambient and classical elements into compositions that range from very sparse to tribal and driving. Just a week before the show I had bought their latest full-length CD, Amphibian, which I enjoy very much... but nothing compares to how great this band is live!
Comprised of lead vocalist Regeana Morris, guitarist/vocalist Damon Young (who played sitting in a classical posture), percussionist Chandler Rentz, keyboardist Nick Pagan and stand-out violinist Paul Mercer, The Changelings stage presence is flawless without conveying the slightest pretention, the band thoroughly charmed its audience. No one wanted to let them leave the stage! I think they did three encores. After the show the band members came out to chat with everyone and Paul and I introduced ourselves. We became fast friends and fans of this amazing band and hung out until past 3 am.
This enchanting night was made complete with a tour of the Ventura Theatre and all its ghostly happenings by the theatre manager Loanne. It turns out there are more than a few unusual events that have occurred since she and Rob took over the theatre, but those are stories for another time. Paul bought all their CDs and we listened to their self-titled debut on the way home it completely mesmerized us. So everyone go see The Changelings if you have a chance, buy one of their CDs, or visit their page at mp3.com.
