Notes on the recording Pablo Casals was one of the most beloved and respected musicians of the 20th century. When he came to Puerto Rico in 1957 and founded the prestigious Casals Festival, he was immediately joined by the world’s preeminent musical talent. Each year an amazing collection of musicians gathered on this island to play in an orchestra under Maestro Casals. And beginning with pianist Rudolph Serkin on that first night in April, 1957, a veritable who's who of the musical world formed the ranks of guest performers to follow. For eighteen glorious years until his death in 1973, Maestro Casals himself held the podium at his Festival, sharing with the world, and with his friends, his great love of music. It is a little-known fact that many of the Casals Festival performances were captured on tape and even on film. Most of this material was recently restored by the Library of Congress, after having been discovered in near-disastrous condition on the island, and now resides exclusively in the Pablo Casals Museum in the capital city of Puerto Rico, San Juan. Some few copies do also exist in the Library of Congress. And one tape, inexplicably, was found in the possession of an artist whose musical contribution to the Festival played no small part in its greatness.

Violinmaking and Menuhin
by Frederic Jueneman Frederic Jueneman, a Classic Arts Showcase viewer, graduated from San Francisco State University in 1955, after a two year stint in the U.S. army, with a degree in music and composition, and then used his training to "conduct" experiments as an analytical chemist for the next 35 years as FMC Corporation in Newark, CA, where he was dubbed "RMS" (Resident Mad Scientist). Since then he has written for many historical and scientific publications. As a composer, he has completed several short piano ensembles and two major works. In this account he recalls his years trying to create a better violin through chemistry, and his association with the great violin player Yehudi Menuhin. My initial approach, being an analytical chemist, was to remove the short chain cellulose fibers and resins from the woods by soaking in a caustic wash and then restiffen the wood fibers with a mineral wash. It's not important to go into the details of the process here, as the primary clue for me had been the rather unique opaqueness of old violin plates, whereas newer instruments are translucent, exhibited by holding them up to a strong light source, showing either the presence of residual resins or their reintroduction with varnishing compounds. Yehudi Menuhin I had begun corresponding with Yehudi Menuhin some years earlier after her was concertizing in the area; his wife Diana had been admitted to O'Connor Hospital in San Jose for some critical tests, and out of gratitude for the care she was receiving he regaled the hospital staff with a spontaneous mini-recital such being the generosity of the man and one which my wife also attended. When afterward she excitedly relayed the news to me I was green with envy, as one might well imagine. In the ensuing years, and under different musical circumstances, Menuhin's and my respective paths would cross numerous times through correspondence on my own compositions and wood treatment process.

Great Recordings Of The Century - Elgar: Violin Concerto, Enigma Variations / Elgar, Menuhin > Customer Review #1: Stunning

The solo playing has so much depth to it, I really cant believe its a sixteen year old playing. If theres a romantic concerto in the repertoire that could really be mishandled by a young player, it would be this one - but somehow Menuhin, even at that age, has managed to express the poignancy and nostalgia of the music better than anyone ever has. Of course, the disc is not without flaws. As has been noted, you can hear the squeaking and junk from the transfer, and there are some absolutely horrendous errors in ensemble between soloist and orchestra. Ive heard one of Kennedys recordings and also Perlmans. For the most part, Perlman generally doesnt get a character that I really like, and the slow tempo in Kennedys last movement kind of bothers me. Ive also heard Shaham do this concerto live on radio with Cleveland Orchestra I believe, and it was really great. Someone should convince him to commit it to CD.

In addition to his being a celebrated violinist, Yehudi Menuhin's international reputation has been enhanced in many ways. He has been instrumental in the organization of three European music festivals, and has also founded a school for young musicians in England. Musically, he has devoted much time to conducting, and in the last twenty years has maintained a deep interest in the music of the East. (He has collaborated on two well-known albums with Ravi Shankar, for example). While talking to Menuhin, one rarely senses that he is in his mid-fifties. Despite his knowledge of music and understanding of people which only comes with time, Menuhin's outlook on life remains as fresh as that of a young child. Perhaps this is, as he has suggested, a result of the fact that as a boy he was comparatively isolated. (A child prodigy, he made his debut playing Beethoven's Violin Concerto at age 11.) In any case, he manifests a great understanding of and interest in both people and his art. Following are excerpts from an hour-long press conference held for Menuhin while he was in Vancouver last week: YM: When I speak of contemporary music, it's not the same as when my son speaks of contemporary music. There's always the generation gap. I realise that I cannot now pretend that when I'm playing Bartok, I'm playing contemporary music, or even Schoenberg. I can't pretend that I'm riding the last crest. I don't in fact know what the last crest is. It's in the airplane that I do most of my contemporary reading, and there's this young English pianist who's the last word in rock, pop, or jazz, whatever you call it. You must know his name ... he jumps on the piano.

Card 1. [A young boy is contemplating a violin that rests on a table in front of him.] The identity of the boy depicted in Card 1 has been recognized for quite some time. Stein (1955) provided a hint in one of the sample stories that he presents in his manual. In it a female subject ends her story with the question, "Was it deliberately made to look like Yehudi Menuhin?" (p. 3) Later Holt (1978) identified the picture as a "Drawing by Christiana D. Morgan, after a photograph of Yehudi Menuhin as a child." (p. 80) When I wrote Lord Menuhin to ask him about the picture he was kind enough to reply with his own TAT story: Actually, I was gazing in my usual state of being half absent in my own world and half in the present. I have usually been able to "retire" in this way. I was also thinking that my life was tied up with the instrument and would I do it justice? (Yehudi Menuhin, personal communication, 31 October, 1993).

ANYONE who has knows where my CD-buying preferences lean to will know that I have a very large proportion of so-called "historical" recordings, usually taken before the stereo era and are thus in mono sound. There's life beyond DDD recordings and sometimes, in listening to some of these and reading a little, one can learn quite a bit about events in the world at that time. Wilhelm Furtwängler was one of the greatest conductors ever, possibly the greatest conductor on record. As an artist and as a person Furtwängler was by far one of the most charismatic, legendary - and controversial. Before the second world war, the so-called pre-war period, Furtwängler had established a career of considerable repute. His flair for conducting showed especially in the works of Beethoven, Wagner and Brahms. Ironically, his love for music was to bring himself considerable suffering. The notorious Adolf Hitler, Führer of Deutschland was also a great lover of the antisemetic Richard Wagner's works, and he admired Furtwängler's conducting to no end. It has been said that after one production of the opera Lohengrin, he went to the unnamed conductor, telling him that the tenor had sung the wrong words at a particular point.

Menuhin's archive saved for nation Following a £1.2m deal with the family of Yehudi Menuhin, the Royal Academy of Music has bought the legendary violinist's personal archive, describ ed as "one of the most valuable and comprehensive collections ever assembled by an individual musician". The acquisition, which includes letters from Elgar, Bartok and Albert Einstein and original scores by Mendelssohn, was made possible by a £1.2m grant from the Foyle Foundation, as well as donations from several individuals. An additional grant of £200,000 from the Foundation will also enable the Academy to conserve the archive and make it accessible to a wide public audience. According to the London Times, a condition of the sale is the "discreet" handling of Menuhin's "intimate" correspondence with members of the Royal Family. A spokesman for the Academy said that none of the royal items - which include letters to and from the Prince of Wales and the late Queen Mother - would be made available to the public. "The family is personally attached to some items," he said. "They are not particularly important historically but have great sentimental value." However, he said the public would have access to the "vast majority" of Menuhin's correspondence.

Passing of renowned violinist and conservationist, Sir Yehudi Menuhin, mourned by Wilderness Society
The Wilderness Society today joined an international chorus of condolences for the family of renowned violinist and conservationist, Sir Yehudi Menuhin who died on Friday aged 82. Sir Yehudi Menuhin was patron of The Wilderness Society from 1976 until his death. An outspoken critic of the destruction of native forests for woodchipping, Sir Yehudi was particularly passionate in his public defence of the tall eucalypt forests of Tasmania, forests that still remain largely unprotected. Acting Campaign Director for the Wilderness Society, Lyndon Schneiders, commented that "the world is a poorer place through the death of Sir Yehudi. Not only has the global community lost an exceptional musician, but also a committed and passionate conservationist. The Wilderness Society is honoured to have had such a universally respected person as its patron for the past two decades." Comment by Wilderness Society stalwart Geoff Lambert:
