They were discussing intonation. The interviewer was, inferred from the area of questioning, about to ask him whether he had absolute pitch. He didn't seem to want to discuss it and merely nodded 'Yes' quickly, as if he was bored by the topic and instead wanted to discuss music." Yehudi Menuhin, 1916-1999
Violin virtuoso, promoter of peace and educator Yehudi Menuhin, whose career spanned three quarters of a century, died March 12, 1999 in Berlin, DDR. Menuhin, whose many awards included the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding, and used his music to spread his message of peace, understanding and tolerance, was 82 years old. Yehudi Menuhin was born in New York, NY on April 22nd, 1916 to Russian Jewish parents who came to America via Palestine. Menuhin was born an American citizen but later enjoyed dual citizenship as a subject of the British Empire. Menuhin received his first violin at the age of 5, and it quickly became evident that he was a rare musical prodigy, a virtuoso violinist Itzhak Perlman noted may have been "the most phenomenal child prodigy that ever existed, certainly in this century" Menuhin made his professional debut at the age of 7 in San Francisco, CA, and at 9 played at the Sistine Chapel in Rome. As an adult Menuhin recalled that he believed that if he played Bach 's 'Chaconne' well enough at the Chapel, that God would hear him and it would bring peace to the world. Menuhin's childhood dream of peace stayed with him throughout his life. As a

Violinists' Discographies on the Web
The
following web sites all have pages listing details of the recordings of the artist to which the link refers. Many researchers will find these lists invaluable. Alas, no two discographies are alike. Many discographers compile lists of only the recordings and the catalogue numbers. But some also list recording dates and a very few include matrix numbers. The occasional list will supply recording details including location information. Very few follow the conventions for writing discographies, but never the less provide the required information. We may never achieve uniformity on these pages, but so long as they are available, the information will be available for future use. Violin Land would like to thank every hard-working and diligent discographer, for, without them it would be a sadder world. A B C D ... Z A

Yehudi Menuhin (Conductor, Violin)
Born: April 22, 1916 - New York, USA
Died: March 12, 1999 - Berlin, Germany The American violinist and conductor Yehudi Menuhin had one of the longest and most distinguished careers of any violinist of the twentieth century. Menuhin was born in New York of Russian-Jewish parents, recent immigrants to America. By the age of seven his performance of Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto had found him instant fame. As a teenager he toured throughout the world and was considered one of the greats long before his twentieth birthday. Even in his earliest recordings one can sense deeply passionate responses to the great composers. Though considered a technical master, it is his highly charged emotional playing that set him apart.
As a young man Menuhin went to Paris to study under violinist and composer George Enesco. Enesco was a primary influence on Menuhin and the two remained friends and collaborators throughout their lives. During the thirties, Menuhin was a sought after international performer. Over the course of World War II he played five hundred concerts for Allied troops, and later returned to Germany to play for inmates recently liberated from the concentration camps. This visit to Germany had a profound effect on Menuhin.
Throughout the 1940's and 1950's, Menuhin performed and made recordings from the great works of the classical canon. During this time he also began to include rarely performed and lesser known works. One of his greatest achievements is the commissioning and performing of

Like Father, Like Son: A Tribute to Moshe and Yehudi Menuhin
by Grace Halsell
Undoubtedly Moshe Menuhin, with whom I corresponded over a 12-year period until his death in 1983, would be pleased to know that his son, the famed violinist, has the same fortitude in speaking out against Zionism. And indeed, Yehudi Menuhin has, to my mind, shown even greater courage than his father. In this era, Zionism is infinitely stronger and more dangerous than when Moshe Menuhin spoke out. And also the father was one of several great liberal philosophical anti-Zionist Jews warning against Zionism. But Yehudi Menuhin stands virtually alone in his anti-Zionist stance, and this is certainly true in his field of music. Yehudi Menuhin was born in 1916 of Russian-Jewish parents who had emigrated separately by way of Palestine. Seeing with alarm the rise of a militant Zionism, Moshe Menuhin voiced the sentiments of such Jews as Martin Buber, Judah L. Magnes, Albert Einstein and Hannah Arendt, all of whom identified themselves not as Zionists but as Jews of Judaism.

The following paragraphs are culled from Yehudi Menuhin's book "Unfinished Journey". They provide an interesting perpective on Indian music as seen by the greatest Western violinist of this century.
(This appeared in R.M.I.C . several years ago but have no information on the poster - I apologize)
What the Indian music has not, and Western music richly has, is, of course, harmony. This is not fortuitous. Just because the Indian would unite himself with the infinite rather than with his neighbour, so his music assists the venture. Its purpose is to refine one's soul and discipline one's body, to make one sensitive to the infinite within one, to unite one's breath with the breath of space, one's vibrations with the vibrations of the cosmos. Outside the family, the Indian's concern does not easily fasten on the group. Europe's genius, on the other hand, has been to form individuals into communities, each accepting loss of freedom in the interests of the whole. Hence collective worship, hence armies and industries and parliamentary democracy, and hence chorales in which each voice has a certain independence but is nonetheless severely constrained by other voices. Indian music thus accomodates the group, but the individuals within it remain soloists, never coalescing into a harmonic statement. To form orchestras of Indian musicians would be to run counter to nature. I have been spared such bastard growths, but I have suffered the excruciating experience of hearing the Indian sitar or vina or violin accompanied by a harmonium, a relic of Christian missionaries' misunderstanding of the culture they were attempting to change.

Yehudi Menuhin Music Scholarship for Nigar
by Jean Patterson
Young Azerbaijani violinist Nigar Mirzayeva has won a two-year scholarship to attend the prestigious Yehudi Menuhin School in Surrey, England. The 13-year-old completed the sixth grade at Baku's Bulbul School this past spring and is enrolled in the Menuhin School for gifted young musicians this September.
Left: Thirteen-year-old violinist Nigar Mirzayeva recently received a two-year scholarship to study music at the Yehudi Menuhin School in London.
Nigar [pronounced nee-GAHR] says that her parents, especially her mother, have been instrumental in developing her musical career. "I started playing the violin when I was seven," she says. "At the time, my older sister Gunel was learning to play the piano, and my mother wanted me to have a musical education as well. I really liked the violin, so we decided that I should try to learn to play that."
In 2000, Nigar had the privilege of taking Master Classes from world-renowned cellist Mstislav Rostropovich during his visit to Baku. She has also taken Master Classes from Dmitry Sitkovetsky, the son of pianist Bella Davidovich. Nigar has already performed with the prestigious Azerbaijan State Orchestra on seven occasions and given four concerts on her own.

Famed as much for his warmth and altruism as for his musical gifts, in private Yehudi Menuhin found emotions hard to express. The violinist's family speak for the first time about his formidable presence. After Yehudi's death, his family is coming to grips with a man some felt they hardly knew. His widow, Diana, is ailing and the family are rallying to her bedside, sharing their sense of bewilderment at life after Menuhin. "When he stopped playing the violin, that was almost a worse blow to me than when he died," reflects Jeremy, his youngest son. "People saw him as serene, but he was a very complicated man. He didn't have moods. He was either more distant or less distant. It was impossible to have an ordinary conversation with him, unless you were talking about one of his projects. The things that were furthest removed from personal feelings were all right. But anything personal was viewed as a weakness." "He wanted things to work for him," says Zamira, his daughter forgivingly. "He had so many ideas that only he could pull off. He needed space, and he was lucky enough to have people in his life who gave it to him, people like me who adored him. Even if I was upset by personal matters, I understood. He would have hated to be thought of as anything but a warm man, but his warmth was for humanity more than for individuals."
