Tasmin Little - Biography
"Already a star in this country and increasingly appreciated abroad, the young violinist Tasmin Little is the musician I nominate for world-wide stardom, an instant charmer of any audience." Edward Greenfield, The Gramophone, December 1994 Tasmin Little is now regarded as one of the world's leading violinists. Born in London, she studied with Pauline Scott at the Yehudi Menuhin School, gained her Performance Diploma at the Guildhall School of Music, where she won the Gold Medal, and concluded her studies privately with Lorand Fenyves in Canada. She has given concerto and recital performances throughout the United Kingdom, Europe, Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand, South America, Hong Kong, Oman, South Africa and Zimbabwe. Tasmin has performed with many of the world's great orchestras, including the Leipzig Gewundhaus, Berlin Symphony, London Symphony, Philharmonia, Royal Philharmonic, Hallé, Bournemouth, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Royal Danish and Stavanger Symphony with conductors including Masur, Ashkenazy, Slatkin, Otaka, Groves, Mackerras, Litton, Handley, Tortelier, Downes, Lord Menuhin and Andrew Davis.

Brief History
I began playing the violin aged 4 with Barbara Parham (Leconfield, East Yorkshire) who teaches by the Suzuki method. I gave six solo performances and four orchestral performances every year from 1990 to 1997. (A selection from my repertoire is listed at the end of my C.V.) I joined the East Riding Youth Orchestra (aged 11) and remained a member for 7 years. I gained a high distinction at Associated Board grade 8 (aged 12). This qualified me for a Local Education Authority scholarship to pay for advanced tuition and travelling expenses once a month until I left school. I was taught by Felicity Lipman and Yossi Zivoni, in London. I was invited to take part in a master class with Tasmin Little as part of Beverly music festival, organised by Martin Roscoe. I played the 1 st movement of Concerto No.1 by Paganini. I led the East Riding Youth Orchestra for two years, a position normally held for one year. I performed Concerto no.1 by Bruch with the orchestra.

Ligeti Concerto with CBSO/Simon Rattle KonsertHaus, Vienna. The young Englishviolinist, tasmin little, introduced herself as a very competent soloist.

BBC Promenade Concert 55

The Ligeti concerto was quite outstanding. Tasmin Little first played it under Rattle in his previous incarnation with the CBSO, and now delivers it quite magisterially. Her cool, silvery tone is ideally suited to a work in which the solo violin frequently has to thread itself between scudding clouds of notes, whether it is the swanee whistles and ocarinas of the second and fourth movements or the cascading chromatic scales of woodwind and strings in the third. The technical command was glorious too, and Little's cadenza (genuinely hers, for she takes Ligeti's option for soloists to provide their own) gave the work its final frisson. There really was creative tension here, for the only time in the evening.

The Ligeti concerto had obviously been prepared with loving care, and had a terrific soloist in Tamsin Little, who had written her own thoughtful but dazzling cadenza for the finale. The earlier four movements are bizarre, stranding the violinist with mechanical ostinati for pages at a time, or highlighting the winds lengthily (Ligeti's string-section is hardly more than chamber-size) while she remains silent, or making her play with exaggerated theatrical

Violinist
A violinist is an instrumentalist who plays the violin . The terms fiddler or fiddle player are also used. In classical music the "fiddle" terms are usually somewhat informal or jokey: they are more standard expressions in folk music. In between there are nuances of meaning and usage which are difficult to formalize. Composer-violinists were common in the Baroque era - all played the violin excellently. In the early 19th century, Niccol³ Paganini did much to expand the instrument's technique. Other notable 19th century violinists include Joseph Joachim (who was friends with Johannes Brahms Leopold Auer (who taught many famous violinists of following generations), Pablo de Sarasate Henri Vieuxtemps and Eugene Ysaye.
