Epilogue The idea for a music festival was first conceived in January 1993 with the offer of a concert by the American singer, Anne Gillard O’Reilly and her accompanist, David Clyle Morse, to raise money for the St. Jude’s Organ Appeal and The North London Hospice. The suggestion was put to the North West Support Group of North London Hospice and at the same time the London Medical Orchestra had offered to perform a concert in aid of the Hospice. The chance remark of "Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a week of music in aid of the Hospice and Organ Appeal" was seized upon by the Chairman of Northwest Support Group, Dr. Chris Donovan. The idea was also well received by Andrew McCrea, Organist and Director of Music at St. Jude’s and Richard Clegg, the Assistant Organist; from those humble and innocent origins the Proms at St. Jude’s 1993 emerged. Arranged over 7 nights the programme was a rich and varied one and included a magnificent exhibition of wedding dresses in the Lady Chapel, to encourage the audience to promenade around the church during the interval. Artistes were very generous with the donation of their time and expenses were kept to an absolute minimum. Tea, coffee and light refreshments, including ice cream were served in the back of the church. The evening entertainments were: Chapel choir of Highgate School, directed by Michael Bowden

Why haven't we seen anyone like John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong etc. for at least 5-6 decades? Is it because, jazz has become less prominent, therefore, not giving the opporutnity for that kind of talent to surface to public attention? Or is it because there just hasn't been that kind of talent? before you answer..consider this. Even though 80 or so years ago, classical music was in a similar state as jazz is now, (Yes I did read the post on classical and jazz music fading out, and yes i agree that it is not as dire as that article may suggest, but we all have to admit, that jazz isn't overly popularly either.) Jascha Heifetz was able to break through, and is now, almost without argument, considered the best classical violinist ever. crawjo In my opinion, from the fan's perspective, jazz today is as good as it has ever been. There are far more choices available, plenty of music to explore. JOHN IN AIRPORT INCIDENT Lara St. John was trying to protect her $1 million Guadagnini violin In yet another post Sept. 11 related incident, violinist Lara St. John was wrestled to the ground by an armed guard at New York's La Guardia airport when she tried to stop him from inspecting her instrument. The incident was quickly resolved and the violinist dismissed it as a misunderstanding. St. John, a rising young virtuoso in classical music, reportedly lunged at the guard when he attempted to touch her $1 million Guadagnini violin with a cloth. The violinist said later that she thought the cloth might contain chemicals that would do harm to the instrument's finish. She reportedly cried out, "No! No! It's an antique!" St. John's violin dates from 1779 and was made by the Italian master in Turin. The violin is on loan to St. John from an anonymous donor. Festival-goers donned wellies with their evening suits or dresses to enjoy the entertainment. As always, the fireworks were stunning, although Mr. Gordon Clark expressed concern that some people in Henley might have been disturbed by the late-night bangs. Blurp, a spider or a genetic mishap? WEDNESDAY Champagne flutes tinkled as we strolled past elegantly clad picnickers on the opening night of the Henley Festival of Music and the Arts. As usual, the atmosphere was relaxed yet filled with anticipation for the musical delights ahead. Early visitors were entertained in foot tapping style with numbers from the Trinity College Swing Band at the bandstand whilst browsing around the art galleries or admiring works of art of the sculpture lawn. Festival-goers were spoilt for choice with entertainment chosen to appeal to a wide audience. For example, from 7 p.m., musicians from the Royal Academy of Music took to the bandstand, whilst the Club Marquee played host to the Marais Wind Ensemble and talented pianist Anne Bolt performed in the Spiegeltent.

Fun festival where children should be seen and heard June 2003 Arts festivals are fun - and not just for adults. That's the message from the organisers of this year's Winchester Festival who are hoping that young people will be both seen and heard at a variety of events between 4-13 July. Music plays a key role in the Festival and a light-hearted introduction to classical composers by internationally renowned cellist Steven Isserlis has appeal for children and childish adults alike. Steven's hour long show - based on his book, Why Beethoven Threw the Stew - is at New Hall, Winchester College on the afternoon of Saturday 5 July. On Tuesday 8 July, children have the chance to hear another world class musician, this time at a reduced price. Violinist Tasmin Little is performing with the European Union Chamber Orchestra in Winchester Cathedral and in offering a 50% discount on tickets for children under 14, the Winchester Festival is actively encouraging the next generation of budding violinists to enjoy Haydn, Ireland and one of Mozart's best-loved concertos on their own doorstep. The penultimate day of this year's event is dedicated to children and family events, starting with author Ian Whybrow who is running two workshops at the County Library in Jewry Street. Younger children have the chance to hear him talk about his new character, Harry, while older fans can hear the master read from his famous Little Wolf series. It's an immensely agreeable composotion, the dynamism of its outer movements framing a central Molto sereno of soothing beauty. Tasmin Little is perfectly suited tot this repertoire and could not give a more committed performance. Another debut on this disc is the setting of In Years Defaced. Of the six songs. only one ('When I Set Out for Lyonnesse') was actually orchestrated by Finzi, the remainder having been expertly set to new orchestrations by five contemporary composers including such luminaries as Colin Matthews, Judith Weir and Anthony Payne (of Elgar Three fame). Further excellent performances set the seal on a firm recommendation.
