Some say that the language most commonly heard on the campus of Juilliard School of Music in New York is not English but Korean. Students of Korean origin reportedly accounted for over 50 percent of foreigners studying there in 2001. It is a fact indicative of the rapid emergence of Korean performing artists on the global stage. Korean students attending the prestigious school recently made headlines in the Korean newspapers. Pianist Ahn Su-jin, who went to the United States in 1990, graduated with top honors from Juilliard's performance division. Lee So-yeon, another Korean Juilliard student, won the first prize at the Gina Baucher International Piano Competition for the second consecutive year earlier this month. Last month, a 20-year-old violinist, Kim So-ok, took an award at the Young Concert Artist Trust in London, and Hong Kook-hee, currently enrolled at the Curtis School of Music, won the second prize at the Maria Callas International Piano Competition. An increasing number of young Korean artists have been winning prizes at international music competitions and rising to stardom in the global arts scene over the last few years.

Lyric Song and the
Birth of the Korean Nation
by Kathy Wolfe
During the 1920's, an outpouring of lyric song began in Asia, on the Korean peninsula, which carried forward the European Renaissance tradition of bel canto and poetic metaphor. It was the more striking, as this art had all but died in Europe, with the 1897 death of Johannes Brahms. Some of these Korean Lyric Songs more resemble those of Verdi or Brahms of the 1870's, than the junk music produced in the West after 1920. Korean historian Dr. Lee You-sun, in his book

ULD president Lee Han-dong said, "as of now, we completely give up our role within the ruling coalition and are being reborn as an opposition party. There will be no further cooperation with the MDP in running the coalition government and in running for the upcoming polls." Lee also said that ULD members in Kim's government, including Prime Minister Park Tae-joon, should either stay in or return to the party. MDP spokesman Chung Dong-young said that his party still hoped there would be "productive competition" with the ULD in the elections.

His chamber pieces have also received international acclaim and he has a long history of collaboration with the Dale Warland Singers. The latest release by this ensemble features a world-premiere recording of the composer’s Walden Pond, a song cycle based on text by Henry David Thoreau and scored for chorus, three cellos and harp. The album also includes two other impressive works by Dominick Argento: A Toccata of Galuppi’s (a rhapsody for chamber choir, harpsichord and string quartet based on a poem by Robert Browning) and I Hate and I Love (seven brief settings for choir and percussion with text by Catullus). ‘Rich, virtually flawless singing from longstanding champion of Argento's music’ - Gramophone Magazine ALEXANDER GOEHR - SING, ARIEL/DEATH OF MOSES NMC ANCORA NMC D096 BBC Music Magazine LA VIE EST UNE PARADE - PATRICE MICHAELS CEDILLE CDR 90000 070 Soprano Patrice Michaels, together with the Chicago Chamber Musicians and the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Paul Freeman, performs an intriguing selection of music by Benjamin Britten's (his masterpiece for soprano and strings, Les Illuminations), Darius Milhaud (a rarely-recorded vocal tour de force, Quatre Chansons de Ronsard); Erik Satie (four newly-arranged songs) and Germaine Tailleferre (the only female member of ‘Les Six’). As well as being an internationally-renowned opera and concert performer, Patrice Michaels is Associate Professor of Opera Theater and Studio Voice at Lawrence University's Conservatory of Music in Appleton, Wisconsin. Her pure, mellifluous voice is heard to great effect on these delightful recordings. ‘She has a supple voice with the ring of Waterford crystal, and seems able to sing anything effortlessly’ -

GENEVIEVE WILLIAMS CHUCK MANGIONE
(Jazz Alley) There are those who won't admit to liking Chuck Mangione, because his music is so commercial; primarily known for his lavishly produced 1970s output, Mangione's recorded work lives up to the accusation. But that doesn't mean he's no good. Mangione resurfaced a few years ago after going missing for the better part of two decades. I saw him on that tour, and let me tell you, there's more to him than the pop-jazz stuff. Good thing, too. GENEVIEVE WILLIAMS HANA, ELAINE DE FALCO'S FABRIC, LOST DOG

OPENING PAGE An Introduction to the Korean Concert Society The Korean Concert Society was founded as a non-profit cultural organization in the winter of 1979 to discover young musical talents from Korean-American community and present them in debut recitals in Washington metropolitan area. Several Korean-Americans and their friends dreamed of discovering the next generation of Kyung-Wha Chungs and helping them if they could.
The Society plans to continue its role of discovering young talented performers and bridging the cultural experiences between Korean-American and mainstream American lives. It also plans to increase frequency of its presentations and to include additional venues to expand its reach. The Society appointed the first Composer-in-Residence in 2003 and plans to expand its activity to discover and support creative talents of Korean heritage in the coming years. The Korean Concert Society will continue to embrace the the classical music art form but also will expand its support to mixed media performing arts.
