The Long Night
Director Anatole Litvak’s The Long Night Le Jour Se Lève (1939), Litvak’s film stars Henry Fonda as Joe — natch — an ex-GI who, emotionally and spiritually cut off from the America he knew before the war, falls in love with a small-town girl (Barbara Bel Geddes). But when she’s seduced by a traveling showman (Vincent Price, at his pre-horror oily best), Joe reacts badly, killing his rival and holing up in a shabby hotel room with a bloodthirsty army of cops and an angry mob outside. As past and present converge (we get Joe’s story in flashback), and tension builds, it becomes increasingly clear that there will be no satisfying explanation for what Joe has done. There’s only the unsettling knowledge that whatever forces drove him to kill a man are out loose in the world now, wandering the streets of even the smallest town. —Paul Malcolm Other recommended new releases : All About My Mother (VHS-DVD)

Chief Editorial Writer From toddlers to senior citizens, the entire nation is engrossed in learning English. Parents are eager to send their children to English-speaking countries, contributing to the nation¡¯s worsening international balance of payments. Nevertheless, the outcome of such enormous efforts and investments reminds us of a satirical comment: ``English is having trouble far away from home.¡¯¡¯ The presidential office of Chong Wa Dae has embarrassed itself by its thoughtless blunder in misspelling the name of the nation¡¯s first president and incumbent president on its Internet homepage in English. Distinguishing Features of Korea's Traditional Music

Developed over the course of several millenniums, traditional Korean music possesses a number of distinguishing features. Korean music influenced that of China or Japan in ancient times, and later, it was in turn significantly influenced by Chinese or Central Asian music. During the 20th century, Western-style music was introduced to Korea and in terms of quantity, became more pervasive than traditional music forms.
Historically, Korean music has developed through frequent exchanges with neighboring nations; yet, it has preserved and developed a number of features that are unique.
First, a leisurely tempo is a general feature of Korean music. In particular, most of the music that makes up the genre known as Jeong-ak has a slow tempo. The Korean musical sound can last as long as three seconds. Such a slow tempo gives music a distinctly calm, meditative character. The leisurely pace of some Korean music is due to the importance placed on breathing, with each beat being matched to the player's inhalation and exhalation. In this respect, Korean music differs markedly from Western music in which the beats occur at a tempo similar to the beating of the heart. In other words, Western music, based on a heart-beat tempo, tends (like the heart) to be active and progressive, whereas Korea's

Welcome to my World Youth Chamber Orchestra page! During December 2003 and January 2004 I had the honour of playing principal with the WYCO for tours of Italy, Sicily and Israel. The orchestra first met for a week of rehearsals in Jesi, Italy (hometown of Pergolesi) on December 1st, and went on to travel extensively, presenting twelve concerts during December and the first week of January. It was with a mixture of both excitement and trepidation that I had left Ireland on November 30th. With 27 players representing no fewer than 20 countries - Israel, Japan, Turkey, Estonia, Greece, Spain, Russia, Australia, Albania, China, Taiwan, Canada, Italy, USA, France, Korea, Iran, South Africa, United Kingdom, and of course, Ireland - I had no idea what to expect. How would the group communicate? How would such a culturally diverse bunch integrate, both musically and socially? Thankfully all turned out well. My colleagues were wonderful people and great musicians, and I thank them all for a truly wonderful time.
