CHEAP-PRICE.NET's Cheap Price
Usually ships within 4 to 5 days It's a real puzzle why a great violinist like Aaron Rosand has never had the major career he deserves. His misfortune benefits bargain hunters, as this wonderful collection of mostly obscure Romantic violin showpieces winds up on a super-bargain label. If this kind of music attracts your fancy, you will seldom, if ever, hear it played with more passion and flair, or better command of the instrument, than Rosand offers. The orchestra is distinctly second-rate, but it doesn't matter much in pieces where the focus is so firmly on the soloist. There's a lot of fun and some surprisingly good music (like the Joachim) in this set. MUSIC OF REMEMBRANCE CHAMBER SERIES PREMIERES ‘CAMP SONGS’
- Melinda Bargreen, The Seattle Times , April 9, 2002
Now in its fourth year, the Music of Remembrance concert series has amassed an impressive record of performances with some of the region’s finest musicians and repertoire that is always thought-provoking. If the series, headed by artistic director Mina Miller, did nothing more than present works of composers who died in the Holocaust, that would be a worthy aim - but it does considerably more.
On Sunday, for example, the series presented the world premiere of the new "Camp Songs" by Paul Schoenfield, a composer whose jazzy and energetic "Café Music" has already become a contemporary classic. When Schoenfield was commissioned to write "Camp Songs", he and Miller examined death-camp poems found in the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C., as likely texts, and the composer decided to set five poems by Aleksander Kulisiewicz (a non-Jewish survivor of the camps, imprisoned for his politics).
These are not mournful poems, but angry, sarcastic ones that resonate with mockery and bitter wit. Schoenfield has set them to high-energy music that pulls together ethnic, classical and jazz elements, sometimes recalling Mahler’s songs, Kurt Weill’s ballads and klezmer traditions. It’s hard to imagine better interpreters than baritone Erich Parce and mezzo-soprano Julie Mirel, who perform alternate songs and unite in the finale, all with considerable drama and exuberance. The instrumental ensemble (violinist Misha Shmidt, cellist David Tonkonogui, clarinetist Laura DeLuca, double bass Jonathan Green and Miller at the piano) is an equal partner with the soloists; De Luca’s superb clarinet really functions as a third human voice.

Current Reno Weather Music Reviews Dec 10, 2000 - Chamber Orchestra's Double Bill, a Mixed Holiday Blessing By Jack Neal What would Christmas be without Handel's "Messiah"? What would "Messiah" be without preceding Handel's monumental oratorio with Bach's Magnificat in D Major? Well, of course, time to be longer and more complete.
Both works are double featured on this year's Reno Chamber Orchestra Christmas concert with mixed results in a two-day stand which opened Saturday night (12/9/2000) at Nightingale Concert Hall.
The Magnificat is conducted by Reno's premier choral director Bruce Mayhall. Mayhall's choral preparation is always impeccable, but his choruses fare better in performance, when turned over to someone else to add all those spices of life that breathe life into what can sometimes be a cadaver of nicely placed notes.
Mayhall's rendition of the Bach never gets past the we're-not-ready-to-cut-loose stage that makes Bach's Magnificat such an ode to joy, when it's not tentatively performed. To make matters more iffy, the orchestral underpinning was just too messy for words. And those brilliant Baroque trumpets? At once adding the glitter and sparkle of radiant happenings - lovely, but too often missing notes and penetrating into the conciousness in much too overbearing a manner. A spill over, perhaps, from the concert's pre-concert warm up of Christmas music a la brass quintet which could be an even nicer touch, if the music could be presented in a more prepared and less raucous way.

Calendar Musicbeat Film Eating ... E-mail Page By William Puchert Actor to narrate RCO performance The world knows him best as Mr. Spock, but this weekend, actor Leonard Nimoy will perform another familiar role: narrator. www.renochamberorchestra.com
Nimoy, who portrayed the stoic Vulcan in the Star Trek TV series and movies, will be narrating the Reno Chamber Orchestra 's performance of Igor Stravinsky's L'histoire du Soldat The Soldier's Tale ). The piece, composed for seven instrumentalists and a narrator, is a parody about a soldier's misadventures with the devil and conveys an irony of wanting the world without making tough choices. In this particular piece, Stravinsky treats the voice as another instrument. Nimoy's voice is the perfect match, according to Scott Faulkner , RCO's artistic operations manager. Faulkner said the RCO was interested in using a celebrity narrator for this piece. Since Nimoy has ties to the area as a seasonal resident of Lake Tahoe, the orchestra decided to invite him to participate in the performance. Faulkner sent a proposal to Nimoy's management in August, and much to the RCO's pleasure, Nimoy accepted the invitation. "We're very excited about this opportunity," Faulkner said.

Then recently I found this marvelous Two CD collection that not only contained his three Violin Concertos; but also his charming "Scottish Fantasy" ; and his under-recorded, yet sweetly-satisfying "Serenade for Violin and Orchestra" (a flowing five movement work, guaranteed to melt the coldest of hearts). All these works were written with a similar romantic flavor of his first violin concerto. And performed by one of the most talented violinists of the twentieth century, Salatore Accardo. He along with Gewandhausorchester, conducted by Kurt Masur produce this wonderful musical dedication to Max Bruch. A must-have set for those who want more than Bruch's first Violin concerto. ...BC
