Violinists' Discographies on the Web
The
following web sites all have pages listing details of the recordings of the artist to which the link refers. Many researchers will find these lists invaluable. Alas, no two discographies are alike. Many discographers compile lists of only the recordings and the catalogue numbers. But some also list recording dates and a very few include matrix numbers. The occasional list will supply recording details including location information. Very few follow the conventions for writing discographies, but never the less provide the required information. We may never achieve uniformity on these pages, but so long as they are available, the information will be available for future use. Violin Land would like to thank every hard-working and diligent discographer, for, without them it would be a sadder world. A B C D ... Z A

His versatility is confusing. What other guitarist could have begun his career as a member of Soft Machine and the Stephan Grappelli Quintet? For this set Etheridge revisits Grappelli territory, but in the spirit of exploration rather than nostalgia. His companionns are rhythm guitarist Dave Kelbie, bassist Malcolm Creese and Christian Garrick, the best young violinist in jazz today. The programme ranges from old ballads, such as 'I'm Through With Love', to a death defying version of Coltrane's 'Giant Steps' that would cause other guitarists to fall apart from the first chorus." (Dave Gelly - The Observer - CD Of The Week) "This quartet is a working band. Since recording their first CD 'Sweet Chorus' they have chalked up nearly 150 live performances in a rhythmic cohesion and creative flow that is evident from the fiirst bar... Dave Kelbie's rhythm guitar is a joy in itself, firm but relaxed, clearly executed but never obtrusive. Chris Garrick is simply the most accomplished and expressive jazz violinist on today's jazz scene... consistently inventive. Malcolm Creese is one of the most in demand bass players around.. A virtuoso who never overplays, his handsome broad bass sound underpins the quartet...

The following interview appeared in 20th-Century Music in January, 1999: Oy! Oy! Hey you mother fuckers. Let's unite and get a mother-fucking world. Cool! Listen, like um, I might not be 'eah on this number. That's why you're hearing my voice, but I'm probably on the cel phone number I've got, which is . Yeah, that's right, man -. Cooool. Okay. Just be cooool. Lay-UH. Catch you lay-UH. BAAAH-EE. OY! In 1992, he announced that he was tired of playing music by "dead guys" and retired from the stage. During the next five years, he studied other instruments, worked on his pet project of composing a suite after songs of Jimi Hendrix, started a family and continued practicing the violin three hours a day. In 1997, he returned to the concert stage with his technique intact and his street persona as defiantly down-to-earth as ever. He is currently touring with an ensemble called the Kennedy Collective playing his Hendrix concerto-suite as well as solo violin sonatas by J.S. Bach and Bela Bartók. I talked with Kennedy on October 24, 1998.

Melody Maker
Interview with Nigel Kennedy (excerpts)
October 28, 1989
To the Reaching Out (Interviews) Table of Contents Next, from the Oct. 28 issue of Melody Maker : There's an interview of Nigel Kennedy, the classical violinist who has played on some of Kate's tracks. Here's an excerpt: "EMI Classical's rising star, who won a gold disc and the BPI Classical Record Of The Year Award for his Elgar Violin Concerto, and has just gone straight into the album chart, at number 43, with his recording of Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" [this could never happen in America], has also played on albums by Talk Talk, Paul McCartney, Judie Tzuke and has been working with Kate Bush on te long awaited follow-up to 'The Hounds of Love', 'The Sensual World'." Then, later in the interview: "Kennedy makes no secret of his intense admiration for Kate Bush and the two have been close friends ever since he worked with her on 'Experiment IV'. This time around, he contributed to two tracks on 'The Sensual World'. "'She's just a great musician, so inspired in her attitude to music. I think she's one of the greatest composers of the century in my opinion. That's another type of music that relates to my way of thinking. You can call it classical, whatever, it just takes in influences from all over. The main song I played on was "The Fog", where I played the counter melody to her vocal. I also did chord banks on another song "Heads We're Dancing". We did it in her own 48-track studio. It was all acoustic. I think it's about the best studio sound I've ever had her boyfriend Del is a great engineer.'"

Allegro Musicians: English Chamber Orchestra Breakdown: As its name implies, The Four Seasons is a collection of four violin concertos, each providing a musical interpretation of the yearly cycle. Composed in 1725 by the Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi, these compositions have become one of the most popular pieces from the baroque era. What is most startling to this listener, is that unlike most other baroque compositions, which tend to be melodically ornate, structurally precise pieces that serve more functional roles, The Four Seasons Overall

This name recognition practically guaranteed phenomenal sales of her major label debut. What could sell better than a violin playing model and actress with looks not unlike Pamela Anderson of Baywatch fame, a TV series in which Linda Brava has appeared as well? The classical establishment disapproved heartily. The album was mostly ignored as if it didn’t exist. is this serious?

Virtuoso classical pop, music that could turn a generation on to the old stuff, and who better to make it happen for them than a punk Kreisler with a fine line in cheeky-chappie insouciance? The beginning of the 1990s seemed to herald an entertaining amount of uproar as several musical worlds braced themselves for irremediable fusion, and it looked certain that Nigel Kennedy would be one of the prime stirrers of the mixing bowl. Somewhere along the line he lost his grip, stardom impinging on achievement, and for the past few years he has been notable by his absence from a productive major role. Nothing has so far quite caught the public imagination again with the same fervour as the Vivaldi, and with classical crossovers from Vanessa Mae to Charlotte Church getting younger by the minute, a 42-year-old violinist with funny hair and bovver boots suddenly seems a bit passe.
