KENNEDY
For the past 25 years, Nigel Kennedy has been acknowledged as one of the world's leading violin virtuosos and is, without doubt, one of the most important violinists Britain has ever produced. His virtuosic technique, unique talent and popular appeal have brought fresh perspectives to both the classical and contemporary repertoire.
In 1992, Kennedy took the controversial and highly publicised decision to withdraw completely from public performance. During this period, EMI issued A Portrait of Nigel Kennedy.
Following a five-year sabbatical, in April 1997, Kennedy made a triumphant return to the international concert platform. Even though the performance took place during the run-up to the British General Election, news of Kennedy’s reappearance occupied the front pages of national newspapers. The Times critic declared, "Only one British violinist in my lifetime has produced anything as bold and exhilarating as that. It is his playing, though, that most reveals Kennedy's new maturity. No other violinist on earth could manage the astonishing stylistic transition presented." The Daily Telegraph stated, "Here was a reminder that Kennedy is a violinist in a million."
Since then, Kennedy has been in constant demand on the international circuit, touring major venues in countries throughout the world, including Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Spain, Switzerland and the UK. In 1998, he made a highly acclaimed North American tour, his first for over five years and, since then, he has returned to the USA many times.

A Little About Nigel Nigel Kennedy was born in Brighton, England and now lives in Malvern, half an hour away from Aston Villa (for whom he is senior vice-president). He studied music at the Yehudi Menuhin School, the Julliard School, jazz clubs and various platforms around the world. His interest in music as a whole has lead to collaborations with Riccardo Muti and the Philharmonia Orchestra (in his Royal Festival Hall debut), the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Yehudi Menuhin, Paul McCartney, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Gidon Kremer, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Stephane Grappelli, Andre Previn, Kate Bush, Level 42 and most of the orchestras in the USA as well as Europe. Nigel Kennedy records exclusively for EMI. His recording of Vivaldi's The Four Seasons went to No. 3 in the UK pop charts and also charted in many other countries. It entered the UK classical chart directly at No. 1 and was still there a year later. This, and sale of one million copies, have earned it a place in the Guinness Book of Records His recordings of the Elgar, Bruch and Mendelssohn, and Brahms Violin Concertos have all earned gold discs; other successful recording include works by Bartok, Ellington and Walton.

The world's most famous violinist offers a flamboyant and sensual celebration of music from Eastern Europe and North Africa
From moonlighting in the New York jazz clubs to studying at the Juilliard School to reinventing the music of Jimi Hendrix and Frank Zappa, and in between stunning the classical world with repertoire from Bartok to Vivaldi, Nigel Kennedy has always been driven by his passion for musical diversity. Rarely has his sense of adventure been better expressed than on his latest project, East Meets East, in which the prodigious fiddler teams up with the three-piece Kroke Group from Krakow in Poland, to deliver a scintillating exhibition of music drawing on the traditions of Eastern Europe and North Africa. Kroke, comprising Tomasz Kukurba on violin and viola, Jerzy Bawol on accordion and Tomasz Lato on double bass, have already established themselves as pioneers in Klezmer and folk styles with a string of their own albums. The addition of Kennedy's violin adds spectacular excitement with each of the 14 tracks offering something fresh and striking, whether it's the electric fiddle that suddenly bursts out of the infectious dance rhythms of Time 4 Time, the hints of pastel-coloured psychedelia amidst the plucked strings and accordion of T4.2, the haunting and highly personal interpretation of the generations old Balkan gypsy song Ederlize, his sheer heart-on-the-sleeve emotion of One Voice or the high energy bonus track, Kukush.

Stuff Smith enthused about and recorded with Ponty. Smith was said to have been disappointed when Ponty moved away from jazz and into rock. Amplification to Ponty was not as it was to Grapelli and others, a necessary evil, but a positive advantage:
" The tone I was getting through the amp was so different, and I got a kick out of it, I liked it. It helped me play jazz, actually, because it took me away from the traditional sound."
Jean Luc-Ponty has possibly gained acceptance as the first virtuoso electric violinist. His recordings and collaborations cover many types of music. From the few recordings I have heard he uses more of the potential of an electric violin than other violinists in this field - sometimes making quite extensive use of "effects". His notes sparkle with accuracy and he has the light agility important when playing the electric violin.
Certainly his career is a successful one and he maintains a busy schedule. Although as a recording artist Ponty is not as prolific as his 'elders' there are a good number of records to choose from.
Nigel Kennedy 1970s - present His performances have attracted boisterous crowds and he regularly plays acoustic, electric (Violectra) and electroacoustic violin (Kennedy's own red 'electric-stradivarius'). His repertoire has covered performances and recordings in venues from small converted stables to massive out-door events. From a young age he was regularly seen playing large classical concertos; chamber concerts; jazz standards, his own compositions and improvisations with many varied groups. The press regularly refers to Kennedy as some sort of punk violinist. This is fuelled by Kennedy's sometimes uncompromising appearance on stage and in public. Mainly however it is the way in which he presents the violin that has created a stir across the world. More recently he released his second recording of the Elgar Violin Concerto (Simon Rattle conducting) and is reported to be trying to drop the "Nige" that he is commonly called in public, preferring the more formal "Kennedy"

Douglas J Noble and Nigel Kennedy, London, 10 January 1995. Violinist Nigel Kennedy contributed 'Fire' to the 'Stone Free' Jimi Hendrix tribute album (Reprise, 1993) and has also played several Jimi Hendrix songs in live performances. At the time of this interview Nigel was planning an album consisting of Hendrix covers and original material but the subsequent album release, 'Metamorphosis' (1996) consisted of solely original material penned by Nigel. UniVibes: How did you come to be asked to contribute to the 'Stone Free' album?
Nigel Kennedy: I'm not really sure! I think it was 'cause my manager looks after Chrissie Hynde who had been contributing 'Bold As Love' and I'd been talking with Alan Douglas... They asked my manager if I'd be into having a go. I'd been playing quite a lot of Jimi's stuff live with a view to maybe recording quite a lot of it once it had developed enough in front of people to see where it was going, and so it just seemed the right time to maybe have a go at 'Fire'. 'Fire' is almost an instrumental song really so it was a fair one to have a go at. I think it was quite an interesting album with all the different stars on there.
UV: Did you chose to do 'Fire' or was it given to you to do?

Performing in public (the Nigel Kennedy viewpoint)
Performing in public (the Nigel Kennedy viewpoint)
I've just been reading an interview with Nigel Kennedy in my local newspaper - Nigel Kennedy the world-famous violinist. mentored by Yehudi Menuhin and Stefan Grappelli, and an avid supporter of the English soccer club Aston Villa.
He has some interesting points to make about performing in public: "Others [some classical performers] seem to perform as if there's a glass wall at the front of the stage between them and the audience. My approach is exactly the opposite - we're sharing some time together. That makes it a far less intimidating atmosphere and people can get into the music. It's not a real conscious thing I'm doing although at some point there was a conscious attempt to get away from the classical image I thought was a fairly contrived one. I've seen classical people and I know what they're like. They're all doing normal sh1t, like everyone else, and then appear in front of the public in this weird, contrived image."
All this presupposes that the performer is 100% up there with it on the technique side and knows the music 100% inside out.

Photo by Rankin. Live Kennedy The Comeback Kid by Timothy Pfaff It’s a good thing that Kennedy’s playing speaks for itself, because it’s a difficult phenomenon to discuss sensibly. Both the playing and the player divide opinion, and not just in two. Virtually all the possible positions one could take have already been staked out and articulated. Sides have been taken. Meanwhile, the bad-boy behavior and angelic playing continue apace, and, evidence is, one preternaturally cheerful violinist is laughing all the way to the bank. Whatever the case, it’s not every artist who could achieve increased visibility by disappearing, which is precisely what Kennedy did in the early ’90s. Easily the most attention-getting thing he’s done—in a career that often seems to be about little else—was vanish. But even today, more than two years after his much-vaunted return, Kennedy’s five-year "sabbatical" from the classical concert stage is a move about which he’s notably circumspect. "I was stepping back from all other considerations and revisiting in my mind the reasons I wanted to be a musician in the first place," he says in a recent interview in San Francisco, where he is performing the Brahms Concerto with the Symphony. "I think music should be a spiritual experience, and if it gets taken over by a kind of technical formula of interpretation, or professional formula of presentation, then you’re no longer being the artist you wanted to be in the first place.
